2 Made One by Christ Welcome News for the Good of the Church Prelude Prelude in E flat Minor J. S. Bach Choral Call to Worship Opening Prayer * Hymn #550 Give Praise to the Lord (Psalm 149) Clothed by Christ Moment of Silence Corporate Prayer of Confession It is only by the power of God that we are able to stand against evil. Trusting in God s grace, let us confess our sin. Eternal God, we confess that we have failed to seek Your will. When the poor cry out for help, we often pass them by. When the weak reveal their strength, we want to silence their voices. Forgive us, God of grace. Save a place, even for us, at that great banquet of redemption when all will be made well, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Now stand firm in your faith, covered by the saving grace of God and ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Sharing of Christ s Peace * Please rise in body and spirit

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. S. Bach Great Is the Lord Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness. We have thought of Thy loving kindness; we have thought of Thy loving kindness, of Thy loving kindness, O God, of Thy loving kindness in the midst of Thy temple. According to Thy name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness, greatly to be praised; great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. Great is the Lord!

8 First Presbyterian Church Portsmouth Announcements Why is the choir wearing green stoles? Green is the liturgical color that represents Ordinary Time in the church calendar. The Presbyterian Church (USA) has sanctioned the use of liturgical colors and promoted their use in the 1993 Book of Common Worship. Advent and Lent are periods of preparation and repentance and are represented by the color purple. The feasts of Christmas Day and Christmastide, Epiphany Sunday, Baptism of the Lord Sunday, Transfiguration Sunday, Easter Season, Trinity Sunday, and Christ the King Sunday are represented by white or gold. Green is the color for periods of Ordinary Time. Red is for Pentecost Sunday, but may also be used for ordinations, church anniversaries, and memorial services for ordained clergy. Red or purple is appropriate for Palm Sunday. During Holy Week, the church may use purple or remain bare (although a few churches will use black for Good Friday). The stoles and robes that the choir is wearing are from Cradock Presbyterian Church. The Rise Against Hunger event that was held on Saturday, October 13, was a great success. 57 volunteers packaged 10,000 meals in 1 hour and 5 minutes (while looking stunning in their red hair nets). Volunteers included the congregation, friends, and family of First Pres. along with members of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Virginia, and the Naval Shipyard. We are making this an annual event, so mark your calendars for next October! New member orientation is today from 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. All those wishing to join FPC are invited to join Pastor Steve for lunch and an overview of the ministry we share. Church Women United s next celebration, World Community Day, will be Friday, November 2, at St. James Episcopal Church, 928 Effingham St., Portsmouth. Refreshments and fellowship time will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by the program at 11:00 a.m. There will be a very brief annual meeting preceding the celebration when those who have passed on will be remembered and new officers will be elected. The Fellowship & Congregational Care Committee is considering the idea of beginning a book club which would meet once a month at the church, possibly during the day on Tuesdays. Members of the club would select the books to be read. If you are interested in participating, please call Pat Sparks at
