1 Bulletin #1414 June 5, 2016 From The Minister s Pen After Baptism rusting that God's word means exactly T what it says, you have obeyed the gospel by being baptized into Christ, for the remission of your sins, to gain salvation (Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16; 1Pet. 3:21). Now what? REJOICE. After Philip the evangelist baptized the treasurer of Ethiopia, he went on his way rejoicing (Acts 8:35-39), and after Paul and Silas spake unto him the word of the Lord, the prison keeper in Philippi and all his were baptized...and he rejoiced, believing in God with all his house (Acts 16:32-34). Joy is the most appropriate reaction to one s baptism because baptism brings about salvation, and there can be no greater event in any person's life than to be saved from the condemnation of hell. Neither material success, nor marriage, not even the birth of one s own children or grandchildren merit as much delight as the knowledge that God s grace has spared you from the consequences of sin. Even the angels of heaven rejoice and are thrilled at the news of one repentant sinner (Luke 15:7,10). ENJOY THE COMPANY OF OTHER DISCIPLES. After appearing to Him on the road to Damascus, the Lord sent Ananias to Saul, who arose and was baptized then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus (Acts 9:18-19). Peter went to the household of Cornelius in Caesarea, And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days" (Acts 10:48). In Philippi, the merchant Lydia believed the gospel when she heard Paul preach it, And when she was baptized,, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there And she constrained us." (Acts 16:15). After the Philippian jailor was baptized with his family, he took them (Acts 16:33), that is Paul and Silas, into his house (Acts 16:34)....And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized, whereafter Paul continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them (Acts 18:8, 11). Although baptism is the culmination of several steps leading to salvation, it is merely the beginning of one's life as a Christian. Those formative days, weeks, and months following baptism require nurturing from other disciples. The scriptures teach that Christians are and ought to be dependent on one another: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of one other (Rom. 12:5; 1 Cor. 12:13-27) CONTINUE STEADFASTLY. On the day of Pentecost following Christ's ascension,

2 Peter preached repentance and baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), adjuring his audience to be saved (Acts 2:40). Then they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, and in the breaking of bread, and in prayers (Acts 2:41-42). To reiterate: although baptism is the culmination of several steps leading to salvation, it is merely the beginning of one s life as a Christian. With baptism, the new Christian commits to a life of faithfulness thereafter. Paul exhorted, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord (1 Cor. 15:58). LEAD OTHERS TO CHRIST. After Saul arose and was baptized (Acts 9:18), and spent some days with the disciples (Acts 9:19) And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God (Acts 9:20). Don t be satisfied with your own salvation while others perish! Jesus taught, Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matt. 5:14-16). What have you been doing since you were baptized? Page 2 Do We Love The Lord More? So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs (John 21:15) The question asked by Jesus in John 21:15 is a good one for us to ask ourselves. Do we love the Lord more than we love our relatives? If we do, we will not let them hinder us from obeying the Lord or worshipping Him. Christ taught: Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven (Matt. 10:32). Do we love the Lord more than we love our money? If so, we will cheerfully and liberally support the Lord s work. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:6-7). Do we love the Lord more than we love entertainment and pleasure? Indulging in pleasure at the expense of Christian living and serving God is sinful for these things have taken over God s rightful place ( Luke 12:15-21). Sinful pleasure is always wrong. But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth (1 Tim. 5:6). Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter (James 5:5). Do we love the Lord more than the praise of men? If so, we will be willing to obey God even if it means we must incur the rejection of men. Some Jewish leaders believed on Christ but would not confess him because they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God (John 12:42-43). The Lord must be the supreme object of our affection. We must be able to sing with meaning, O How I Love Jesus!

The Sound Doctrine class (Dr. W. F. Washington, teacher) had the highest attendance among the adult classes (96 students) and the 11 th & 12 th grade class (X. Snell & V. Jean, teachers) had the high attendance among the youth classes (16 students). The teachers of these classes will be presented with a plaque in the near future. Sunday, JULY 17 th, is High Attendance Day at Golden Heights. Each member s mission is to invite unchurched family and friends to attend our worship and also to reach out to those who do not attend services faithfully. We ask that you do the following: 1) Identify people NOW who you know are not in Christ and plan to invite them. 2) Pray that they will be receptive to your invitation. 3) Extend an invitation to them with a heart filled with the love of God. Follow these simple rules, and you will be surprised at the results. 1. Resolve not to miss a single service of the church unless hindered providentially! No excuses this time, but for a change make a few sacrifices for the Lord. 2. Try praying every time you have a problem or a decision to make. If you feel the slightest need, pray! And while you re doing it, try praying for your enemies (those with whom you don t get along too well). 3. Make it your responsibility to bring at least one visitor to services, preferably a family. Don t just invite them; make a date with them. 4. Read and study your Bible every day, even if you have to turn off the TV.
