UNITED CHURCH of CHAPEL HILL November 25, 2018 WELCOME & THANK YOU FOR JOINING US! No matter who you are, or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. WE INVITE PEOPLE of every age, race, marital status, sexual orientation, means, ability, and spiritual tradition to join with us in the love of God and neighbor: through worship, dedication to education, and commitment to service. ACCESSIBILITY Large print bulletins, children s bulletins, & hearing devices are available from ushers. ASL is available at the 11:00 service. All-gendered handicap accessible bathrooms are throughout building. The elevator is in the Narthex. There is a ramp at the West end of the building for access to the lower floor. NURSERY CARE Nursery care for infants through first grade is available from 8:30am to 12:30pm every Sunday in rooms 130, 127, and 126 (our crib room). We encourage children in 2nd grade to worship with their families. Children s bulletins and bibles are available in the Narthex. PRAYER BOOK A prayer book is placed in Narthex before worship services. You may write prayer requests to be read during the Prayers of the Church during worship service. Please get permission before using another person s name. CHILDREN AND FAMILIES We welcome families with babies and toddlers into worship. Rocking chairs are available at the back of the sanctuary for your comfort. If your child needs space to roam, privacy to nurse, or a bathroom with a changing table, you may go to the Family Parlor, directly across the Narthex. The service is broadcast and ushers will bring the sacrament to you. PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAME TAG AND TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE 1
WORSHIP AND THE WORD BELL OF INVITATION You are invited to use this as time to prepare for worship PRELUDE Voluntary No. 19 (d minor) John Stanley *OPENING PRAYER Holy God, you were present at our beginning. You will be there at our ending. As the one who is and was and is coming, be with us each and every moment of our lives. Reign in our lives, that we may reflect the light of your love. Reign in our world, that your kingdom may abide on earth as it is in heaven. In your mighty name, we pray. Amen. *HYMN 303 DARWALL S 148TH Rejoice Give Thanks and Sing 2 2 * As able, please stand Bold indicates congregational response
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Mighty God, when we confuse your rule in our lives with our personal power, forgive us. Guide us on paths of humility, remembering that your kingdom is not of this world. Guide us on paths of righteousness, partnering with you to bring your kingdom to this world. Guide us on paths of thanksgiving, recognizing that your gifts and blessings enable us to follow in your ways. In trust of your powerful grace and your mighty love, we pray. Amen. *ASSURANCE OF GRACE God has established the World, and God s realm will never be shaken. God claims us for the realm of Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemption. In the name of Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen. *SUMMARY OF THE LAW Our Lord Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. *PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. 3 3
*GLORIA PATRI WESTMINSTER ABBEY WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please sign the friendship register in your row and share your contact information with us so that we can welcome you and help you to connect with the ministries of our congregation. Later in the service, the offering is our practice of expressing gratitude for the grace of God that has been revealed in our lives. Please consider including United Church of Chapel Hill in your household s plan of generosity by participating financially in the life of the church. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Theodore Jay Sorensen and Gabriel Spencer Sorensen (October 7, 2018) Covenant promises made by Kristen Sorensen. CHILDREN S BLESSING Children are welcome to stay in the Sanctuary for the entire worship service. We encourage them to use the worship activity bags, bibles, and storybooks available in the Narthex. Children in first grade and younger may go downstairs to the nursery; infants through 2-yr olds are cared for in room 130; 3-7 year olds in room 127. The Family Room, just across the Narthex, is also available for families and you can hear the service from there. As the children leave the Sanctuary, we invite the congregation to sing a blessing: 4 4
Go Now in Peace GO IN PEACE TODAY S LESSON LESSON PSALM 93 The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the Lord! Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore. LESSON JOHN 18:33-37 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. 5 5

WHAT S HAPPENING STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN Thank you to everyone who has pledged. We appreciate all the support from our Congregation. If you have not pledged, remember all gifts to United Church make a transformational difference to our ministry, but we can maximize the impact of our giving by making a pledge. Pledges to the Ministry Fund enable us to make plans for our staff, programs, and social outreach. No gift is too small. Pledges can be made by mail or online on our website, HANGING OF THE GREENS & ADVENT WREATH MAKING Saturday, December 1 At 10 am come help clean the church and prepare for Christmas. Advent wreath-making is open to all in the Fellowship Hall. If you have a wreath mold from last year, please bring it with you. Additional wreath molds will be available. LOVE OFFERING FOR REV. SUSAN STEINBERG & RECEPTION Reverend Susan Steinberg has been a blessing to United Church both as a member of our congregation and as a leader while serving as a member of our staff team. She has clearly answered God s call to be an integral part of our community of faith. As she prepares to transition to the next chapter in her faith journey, we would like to ask for our congregation to send her off with a love offering to help demonstrate our gratitude and appreciation for all that she has done for United Church of Chapel HIll. Please consider and participate in donating to this offering as we bid her farewell. Donations can be made online or by noting Susan Steinberg Love Offering on checks or envelopes. We will have a reception for Rev. Susan Steinberg December 2 at 10 am in the Assembly Hall. YEAR END CHARITABLE GIFTS If you haven t yet taken your RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) for those over 70 ½ years old, you have until December 31, A great tax strategy left alone by the new tax law is the charitable rollover. A Charitable rollover is a distribution from a taxpayer s IRA made directly to a charity. The distribution is excluded from taxpayer s income and will satisfy your RMD for the year. Everybody wins. If you are planning a year end stock gift, please remember that it must be transferred to the UCCH brokerage account by December 28th, Stock gifts are a great way to get a charitable donation on appreciated stocks. Please contact Matt Newton or Duane Gilbert in the church office ( ) to get more information. Thank you for supporting our Program of Ministry. 8

REIGN OF CHRIST At the heart of the apocalyptic season Jesus reigns from a cross. It is the end. It is the beginning. His death is the catastrophic end that begets something entirely new. With this revelation of Christ enthroned, every person must undergo great upheaval. For Christ is enthroned not only in suffering, not only in glory, but in the human heart. In your heart. In mine. The upheaval exposes what is false in us, and the painful but ultimately fruitful revelation of what is True. The church invites you and me into this season of upheaval of our very being, that we may participate in the devastating holiness enthroned deep in our heart of hearts where Truth reigns. ~Rev. Suzanne Guthrie 10
