September 2018 Newsletter - Spreading The Light First Southern Baptist Church 1524 N. State Route 89 Chino Valley, AZ Mark A. Reeder, Pastor Jackie Boyd, Assist. Pastor Know Jesus, Love our Neighbors, Share Jesus
Pastors Paragraphs Yesterday our church approved the Mobilization Report which is the document that lists who will lead and serve this congregation and our community (starting September) for the next year in the ministries of our church. I m excited first for the number of people who filled out forms indicating their willingness to serve and that some key vacancies have been filled. This has been a good year for us in terms of reaching priority objectives like prioritizing prayer and making it purposeful and like getting additional pastoral staff on the field and effectively getting prospective and new members through Base Camp. It looks like by the end of the year we will have our ushers and GREETERS trained and staffed to take care of folks when they show up at church. We are also forming what we call a C.A.T. (community action team) to get better connected to our community to share the gospel with them. Pastor Jackie is leading that and is going to oversee education and discipleship ministries in the year ahead including teaching the Journey discipleship class that meets on Sunday mornings starting in September. It has taken a lot of time and work to get here, but we are seeing God bring all this together in wonderful ways! This has all been God s gracious answer to those who have faithfully prayed! I am finishing up the sermon series on church leadership and church structure which are seldom taught in most churches. By the end of the calendar year we should have functioning elder and deacon bodies made up of both vocational pastors and laymen who will work to keep us focused on our priorities as a church and carry out both teaching biblical principals and implementing necessary care for this flock and to meet our community where they are with the love of Christ. In Acts 6 we see an example of a distinction between those who prayed and taught the word (elders) and those who served tables (deacons) both equally important and both crucial to functioning as the body of Christ. This important distinction grew out of... Disciples increasing in number (and a) complaint... (Acts 6:1) which was growth-to- vs 7, And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. Which was explosion! All that because the priority was established, (vs4) But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." and the ministry of serving was not neglected! I m praying that s what God is up to here and looking forward to how that works itself out!! All for His glory, Pastor Mark
Assistant Pastor s Paragraph When upon life s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. These are the words of an old hymn count your blessings. Christian remembrance is the key to spiritual blindness. As I look back in life at all of the things God has done for me and my family I commonly will say that I am blessed more than I deserve. As these lyrics state Count your many blessings and name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done, I may have never been more surprised than when the Lord showed us that he was sending us to Arizona. In just being here a few short weeks there is no doubt in my mind that this is truly a blessing from God to be with you. From standing on my back porch watching a double rainbow form with the thunder in the distant background to gathering in prayer in the library on Wed night, with a few faithful soldiers of the Cross, I am in Awe of the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon me. Needless to say I am honored to be here serving alongside each and every one of you. I know that the Lord has some wonderful things ahead for our church. As I am learning what those things are and what my new roll entails I ask that you join me in prayer for wisdom and discernment. As for my family the Homeschooling year has begun and everyone is getting back into the routine of getting their school work done. So keep Jessica, my wife, in your prayers as she teaches all 6 of them. She is very good at it and it is good that she is the teacher and I am the principle as it might turn into boot camp by the end of the day. The truth is stated on a wooden sign that hangs in our kitchen and it says Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches Proverbs 24:3-4. I honestly believe my wife and 6 children to be those precious and pleasant riches. In the third verse of count your blessings it states; When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold. Count your many blessings, money cannot buy Your reward in heaven, nor your Lord on high. Continuing to count my blessings one by one, I can now count FSBCV as one of those riches untold. With Faith in Christ, Assistant Pastor, Jackie Boyd
W.M.U. Corner By Evelyn Ross September is here and in whole, our community, like others have settled back from a vacation mode to a regular routine. Summer 2018 is now history. The children are back in school. Our church has started a new year with many returning to their previous service positions and some new faces accepting service positions in our church for the first time. In WMU, we have some changes in our leadership positions. Terri Dodson, has accepted and is now serving in the position of Assistant Team Leader and I will be serving as Team Leader. Please pray for both of us as we serve this year. Our goals in WMU are to share the gospel with people in our community and our church along with educating our church and community about missions. These two things are our priorities. WMU will also be setting the contribution goals for our church for Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoeboxes, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, and Arizona State Missions. This year we will continue helping the Pregnancy Resource Center in Chino Valley, The Prescott Pregnancy Center, displaced children in our community on an emergency basis, continue to help with the quarterly community clothing drive and will sponsor the annual OCC packing party in November. We also will be preparing goodie trays for the homebound families in our church and community at Christmas time. We encourage all women in our church and community to join with us in these endeavors. We meet on the 2 nd and 4 th Friday of each month. Our first meeting will be on September 14 th, at 10:00 A.M., here at the church in B building. This month, we, here in Arizona, are praying especially for our missions in our state. The week of prayer this year is September 16 th 22 nd. On Sunday, September 16 th, you will find in your bulletin, an insert for this offering. We will ask you to pray for the missions in our state that week and also as to what God leads you to give. On Sunday, September 23 rd, there will be an envelope in your bulletin for you to use to give to this offering, if you so choose, giving above your regular tithe. This year our church goal is $1000. The Arizona Southern Baptist State goal is $160,000 to be distributed among the following ministries: Disaster Relief, $20,000, Ministering to Pastors that are in crisis situations, $40,000, Christian Challenge, $20,000, Revitalizing Churches, $20,000, Planting Churches, $20,000, Student Ministries, $20,000, and Hispanic Ministries, $20,000. We need to continue to pray all through the year for these vital ministries in our state. Operation Christmas Child is rapidly approaching. In the foyer of the church is a display and also a basket where you can place your donations for the packing party in November. There is also a list of items already received and items needed for the party. Also, it is time to start packing your boxes. There are a lot of sales going on for items you can put in your boxes. There are boxes under the display table that are free to take, should you need a box to pack your items in. Remember to pray for the child that will be receiving your box. Prayer will get your box to that special child that needs to know that someone loves them. Remember to include $9 for postage for each box you pack. Next month, we will have more details regarding the packing party.
(WMU con't) This month we also remember and pray for the families that lost loved ones on September 11, Let us also remember to pray for the leaders in our country, the midterm election next month and also our Pastor, Assistant Pastor, the ones that have leadership positions in our church, and the people that will be serving alongside them this year. We also want to pray and remember our Missionaries and families both here and abroad. Many of our missionaries and families are in great danger daily. We need to pray for the salvation of the ones they serve. We in WMU look forward with great anticipation as we start this new year. I invite all ladies that are interested in supporting and promoting our missions, to join us when we meet. We are excited about planning and carrying out projects in our church, community, and beyond. Please feel free to call me should you have questions about WMU, helping with any of the projects or attending our meetings. We look forward to your call or attending our meetings.
Senior Ministry Well, August 24th, we went to the Diamondbacks Faith and Family night. We had 26 people, it was a great time for families. We watched the ball game, which didn't go well for the Diamondbacks, so we won't discuss that. The fireworks and concert, MercyMe, were awesome. I think it was the latest some of us, have stayed up in a long time. Most of us returned home by 2:00 AM, it was a late night. We will be having our Barbecue at Lynx Lake, on September 27, There is Fishing, but you need to have a license. You can check with the Forest Service office to see about the free fishing license they offer. for seniors. If you have a canoe, you can bring it and paddle/fish on the water. The hamburgers and hot dogs and buns will be furnished by the senior ministry team, please bring a side dish to share. It is also nice to sit and enjoy just being outdoors. Hope to see you there! 3 rd Stan Martin 4 th Afton N. 8 Men s Ministry- Ken Miller Do, Do not, there is no try. - George Lucas The monsoon season is coming to a close. God has brought to us glorious rain. The healing of the parched land, Rain! We all love the smell of rain, the rolling green hills, and our gardens growing. Especially evening thunder storms, dissipating the day s heat. We all love the blessing of rain. One thing I don't like is rain brings on the weeds. Literally, overnight weeds grow in the yard. One day a clean yard, the next day weeds stand two feet tall over running my yard. This is also what happens in our spiritual lives. As God brings blessings to our lives, it's easy to become complacent or even lazy with our spiritual walk. Our spiritual yards that we diligently focused on can easily become over run with weeds of destruction if we become focused on the blessings and not the one who blesses. In the Old testament, we're given a tremendous amount of history showing examples of Israel following God and being blessed. Then turning around and falling away from God and being persecuted. These lessons in history have never ceased to exist. I have watched multiple times where a person devotes to following Christ to be rewarded with great life blessings. Only to become caught up in these moments of prosperity and to fall away from God. How do we keep from becoming prey to lazy Christianity? Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart, for consider what great things He has done. 1 Samuel 12:24. Don't allow yourself to be caught up in the prosperity of Gods blessings. Don't stop serving God with reverence and integrity. During our times of trials, it's easy to spend time with God for our hearts are heavy. It's during the times of prosperity that we should focus on spending even more time walking with Christ. More time in prayer lest we forget where our blessings come from. As Timothy put it, I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service. (1 Timothy 1:12) Always remember, our work on earth is never finished until God calls us home. Give praise to God when it's hard. Give praise to God when it's easy. Give praise to God in all seasons of life, drought or rain. Always keep your heart focused on above, and the weeds of life won't grow. 1Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always; Pray without ceasing; In everything give thanks; Heavenly father, Thank you for today. I will not worry about tomorrow for it belongs to you. I will not dwell in yesterday because it cannot be changed. Today is today, and I will give you praise for another day of life. Help me to remain steadfast during the seasons of trouble. To remain humble during the seasons of blessings. May I never take your grace and mercy for granted. I love you Lord with my whole heart. I follow wherever you may lead. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
