November 2018 Newsletter - Spreading The Light First Southern Baptist Church 1524 N. State Route 89 Chino Valley, AZ Mark A. Reeder, Pastor Jackie Boyd, Assist. Pastor Know Jesus, Love our Neighbors, Share Jesus 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. Philippians 4:4-8 NKJ
Pastors Paragraphs I was recently thinking about the church and prayer and reading through Mark s account of Jesus cleansing the Temple. I started reading the context of the Temple cleansing and realized that this was a really bad day for Jesus. Have you ever had a bad day? Did ya ever wonder how often Jesus did? It says in Mark 10:14 Jesus was indignant because disciples were hindering children from coming to him. Then 10:17-22, the rich young man comes to him and it is discovered that he was a good man that only lacked the ability to walk away from great possessions. 21 says Jesus loved him and 22 says the young man was disheartened and went away sorrowfully. Then Jesus tells His disciples He s going to the cross (32-34) and James and John want first shot at the inheritance. (35-40) that may be a slightly crude interpretation of what happened there but it is certain that is hardly the right response to Jesus announcement! If that ain t bad enough they come to Jericho and a blind man starts calling out to Jesus for help and gets chewed out for doing it. 10:48, Jesus says call Him and He healed him. Then there is the triumphal entry and Jesus comes to the fig tree with no fruit and Jesus (who is hungry) curses the tree. I caught myself wanting to name a sermon on all this, The day Jesus got mad. Chapter 11:1-14 Then!! Jesus enters the temple and trashes it! Finding the money changers and the sacrifices for sale must ve been the last straw. He cleaned house and quoted from Isaiah 56:7, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. That s when it hit me, how we treat kids, choosing money over eternity, making light of His Cross in our desire to be the main event, discouraging kids and blind folk from coming to Jesus could ruin His day. I know we d like to think we wouldn t do any of that but take a minute a let the Holy Spirit show you! It s almost like it all rolled into one when the commercialization of the temple epitomized how messed up the human predicament really is. The house of prayer for all nations! PRAY! EVERYONE! FOR EVERYONE! ALL THE TIME! FIRST AND FOREMOST! Forgive me. I thought I just heard Jesus say, Go Ahead, Make My Day!! Let s do that. Pastor Mark
Assistant Pastor s Paragraph Wow it's already November! I actually love this time of year and I am excited to see the changing of the seasons in Arizona. This time of year can also be stressful with the holidays coming up and the challenges that come with family and shopping and all of that. One way that you can make the holiday season less stressful is through the Church mission statement. This is a three part daily plan that you can invest in and I guarantee your return on investment will be more than you expect. By taking just 3 easy steps you can make the mission statement personal to you. STEP 1: Know Jesus This step is accomplished in several ways. One way is that when you attend church on Sunday or in a weekday Bible Study you are learning more about whom Jesus is and the nature of his character. Also by having a personal study time at home or a devotional time with your family, you are making efforts to know Jesus more. As we know him more we begin to understand his nature and charter and this reveals to us how we should look upon our neighbor as Christ looks upon them. Step 2: Love our Neighbors This time of year presents a neat opportunity as Christmas music begins to be played on the radio and others see us giving thanks to God and honoring his Birth. This draws people to ask questions about the Hope that we have in us, which we should be ready to give. And Giving is actually the key of our response to that question. As you see your neighbor in need this time of year seek out how you might be able to assist them and expect nothing in return. I once was a volunteer fireman for 5 years at Potter County Fire Rescue in Amarillo, TX and I learned that if you really want to volunteer to help someone that you should volunteer your time for free. The reward for the person and for you is greater than you can realize. Step 3: Share Jesus In Matthew 28 Jesus gives the great commission for us to go and make disciples of all nations. One wonderful way you could do this is by using the Paul and Timothy method. This is a method in which you seek out someone who you could mentor. Ladies find a younger lady that would be willing to meet with you once a week or sometime where you can get together and you can invest your wisdom into her. Men likewise find a young man in the church that you could help encourage and share your life experience with. This would be a great time of encouragement and sharing Christ with someone. I can't think of a better way to join Christ on mission than by making the mission of our corporate worship the mission focus of my personal worship also. With Faith in Christ Assistant Pastor, Jackie Boyd
WMU Corner By Evelyn Ross Fall leaves, crisp morning air, turkey, pumpkin pie, and the promise of snow. These are just a few of the many things we look forward to in the fall going toward winter each year. We are sad to announce that Terry Dodson, our Assistant Team Leader, has stepped down and has moved to Texas. We have just finished Socktober and the response was wonderful. Many homeless children now have socks to keep them warm during the cold winter months ahead. This month we will be packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a vital part of the relief organization Samaritan s Purse. We have the wonderful opportunity of being missionaries ourselves by sending gospel opportunities to many children that have never heard about Jesus. Join us by packing a box or two to send to these children and don t forget to include a picture and a note to the child that will be receiving your box. Our Church goal for OCC this year is 300 boxes. We also want to again invite you to the Operation Christmas Child packing party that WMU will be sponsoring on Friday, November 9 th at 10:00 A.M. in the Family Life Center, C building. You are welcome to bring an item or two for a shoebox and there will also be a donation box set up for anyone that would like to help with postage. There will be refreshments, prayer, fun, and laughter. We love packing for these children and you will too. Don t forget to bring the boxes you pack at home on Sunday, November 11 th. Should you forget to bring your boxes on that day, there will be an opportunity November th to bring your box to the Chino Valley Drop-Off location which will be in C. Be sure to check the operating hours. These will be posted on the WMU bulletin board. We meet on Friday twice a month, the second and fourth Friday at 10:00 A.M. We invite any Women that would like to become missionaries here at home, to join us in W.M.U. We have some noteworthy events coming up. In December, we minister to our church and community shut-ins by preparing goodie trays for them. In January, we sponsor a baby shower for the Pregnancy Resource Center. We also have a potluck each month. Please join us. The best is yet to come! We always want to remember our North American Missionaries, International Missionaries, their families and the people they work with. We encourage you to pray for them every day. They covet our prayers. Many of our missionaries serve in areas that are dangerous. They are also away from their families during the holidays. Please pray for them as they spread the gospel. Also pray that the hearts of the unsaved people they serve will be open. Please also pray for their safety.
Youth News Howdy... Fall break is over and all is back to normal. That means Winter retreat is almost here. There will be a sign up sheet in the youth room. 6 Building & Grounds WORK DAY November 3, 2018 Saturday, November 3rd, will be another Church Work Day. We will be working on: Re-anchoring the Sanctuary Roof (screws are all coming out) Trimming trees & bushes around Building C Cleaning up the area along the front sidewalk I would really appreciate it if someone will also look at the hot water line in Building B to discover why we are not getting hot water in the hallway bathrooms. Come early - roof project will start by 8am. We will be renting a perribone crane. If you have a harness, please bring it. Also, we will need extra trimmers and perhaps a chainsaw. Please let me know if there are other projects that need to be addressed that day. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Thank You! Shirley Urie Clothing Ministry The date for the final Clothing Giveaway for 2018 has been set for Friday, November 30th and Saturday December 1st from 9:00am-12 noon. We will be setting up on Thursday, November 29th starting at 9 am. Anyone wanting to help set up tables or stage the clothing are always welcome to help our volunteer team. With Christmas just a few weeks after the giveaway we anticipate a large turnout. Although we have been blessed with a mild winter so far that can change quickly. Blankets, gloves, socks, coats, sweaters and everything winter will go quickly as well as those almost new shoes and perfect surprise Christmas gifts. This has been a very successful year for our church community outreach ministry aka The Clothing Ministry. We can't thank you enough for your generous donations. We are still in need of more in order to finish strong. The giveaway provides us the opportunity to show the community that our church "Knows Jesus-Loves our Neighbors-Shares Jesus" We are looking forward to how GOD will use us going forward in the new year!
Men's Ministry There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know oneself. Benjamin Franklin Have you ever given thought to how much we need electricity? We use it to power lights so we can see. As heat to warm water and meals. We even now use it to power vehicles. We sometimes forget that even our brains run on electrical pulses. Electricity is all around us. In the sky as flashes of lightning. The static from rubbing our feet on carpet. We rely on the power of electricity for so many of our physical needs. When it comes to our spiritual lives, many of us aren t plugged into the most reliable source of power, God. A lamp that s not plugged in, cannot give off light. Just like an unplugged lamp, we can t expect to see God working, hear answers to prayer, or even feel his presence in our lives if you re not spending time plugged into God through prayer and meditating on His word. Prayer and meditation is just the first step to being plugged in. To have your lamp shine, it must also be turned on. That means getting involved in a bible study group or a church activity. Become active for God. If we keep the redeeming power of God all to ourselves, it is power that s hit a dead end. That s when we become spiritually weak and even burned out. God s healing power was never intended to be bottled up. It s meant to flow openly and freely for all people so that all people may live in the warmth and security of Christ light. Where are you in the flow of God s electricity? Are shining bright for Him? Are you plugged in but not turned on? Maybe you have the plug in your hand but don t know how to get plugged in. If you want to know more about being a plugged in working lamp for God, come join me on Thursday nights for bible study. We start at 7pm. What are you waiting for?
