The weekly offertory is what the parish depends upon to cover most of its weekly operating expenses: staff salaries, supplies, utility bills, etc. Offertory includes money from weekly envelopes and loose checks from registered parishioners. THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The readings this Sunday seem to focus on generosity. The prophet Elijah asks an impoverished widow, who has almost nothing, to be generous. And she is. The letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus offering of himself is an act of giving so substantial that it does not have to be repeated. In the Gospel a widow gives of her substance, in contrast to the rich who give a lot from their abundance but who have a lot more to give. The first reading hints that these scriptures are not only about giving. They are also about fear. Elijah tells the widow, Do not be afraid to give your all. The depth of generosity that God asks of us is only possible if we let go of our fear. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 3 T HIRTY - SECOND S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME 11 N OVEMBER 2018 Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, my soul. GIVE EVERYTHING In First Kings, Elijah meets a widow and immediately makes a request that she promptly fulfills; then he makes another that she resists. His response is not to chastise her lack of charity but instead he says, as Jesus will say repeatedly say in the Gospels, Do not be afraid. He recognizes that it is not lack of charity that prevents her from giving him a little food, it is fear, fear that she will not have enough for her son and herself given their dire straits. Elijah looks beyond the obvious. He asks something of her and then gives back to her, from God s abundance, something even greater. The same is true in Hebrews. Christ offers himself, not as the priest does with a life not his own, but as the genuine Son of God. Again in the Gospel, the substantive generosity of the impoverished widow is contrasted with the apparent generosity of the wealthy. The wealthy are found lacking. BE NOT AFRAID It is clear that God prefers the widow s generosity because it displays a lack of fear about what will happen if she leaves her life entirely in God s hands. The widow, who lacks material goods, still fears for her welfare and that of her family but both widows, in Mark and in Kings, overcome that fear to place their reliance on God. The wealthy, as we have seen before in the Gospels, have a lot more to give away before they would need to put their reliance entirely on God. Many cannot find the strength and courage to do so. They give big gifts to the temple thinking this will bring them favor, as it does in the world. But God asks more of us than the world does. God asks that we live our lives as if they depended entirely on God and not our own accomplishments. Because they do. -Psalms 146 I always thought it took a lot of nerve for Elijah to beg that poor woman for a meal. Even though, during a long drought, she has only a bit of her food to give to her son, he still asks her to make a little cake for himself. It would be easier to understand if we heard the verse before this reading begins: God tells the prophet that he has commanded a widow to feed you. (1Kgs 17:9) Now the widow was not aware of this command. But she does as Elijah asked. That took even more faith than Elijah showed. She was afraid for herself and the boy. But she had enough faith to risk the last of her food to help someone else. She shows us that we are obeying God s commands when we trust him. Most of those commands come not from a vision, but from someone s cry for help. I wonder how many good people have passed up a chance to do God s will because they didn t hear directly from God what to do. When you hear that a tornado destroyed a nearby neighborhood, do you hear God asking you to help? Do you hear God s voice when you read in the bulletin that the food pantry is running low? When a storm knocks out the power on your block, do you think God is asking you to check on the elderly widow next door? And if you do hear God calling in these examples, how do you respond? You can be like the rich people in the gospel and just give your ten percent. Or do you have the faith of the woman whose few cents were all that she had. It takes a lot of courage to trust God completely. Do you have what it takes? Copyright (c) J. S. Please make checks payable to St. Ann s Church WIDOW S MITE Historically, widows have been at a financial disadvantage. When her husband died, a woman s source of income most likely went with him. That was why the generosity of a widow was striking in Biblical times. Elijah met a poor widow who prepared to use the last of her flour to bake one more cake for herself and her son. Elijah started out by asking her for a drink of water, but quickly added his request for something to eat. She informed him of her situation, but Elijah promised that her store would not empty. With no more than Elijah s words, she trusted that God would provide for her. God s promise was good and she did not go hungry during the drought. Another widow caught Jesus eye in the reading from Mark. As she put her two small coins into the collection that supplied the treasury that helped those in need, Jesus taught the disciples a lesson about true giving from the heart. Unlike the officials who demonstratively gave their offerings, this woman quietly dropped the coins of her sustenance into the collection. The monetary value of her gift was far smaller than that of the officials, but her gift was far more valuable. GIVING FROM THE HEART Much of our giving is from our surplus. This is true not only of what we give financially, but also of our service. We are very busy people and generally when we offer our time, it is of direct benefit to us or someone we love. We may volunteer to help with a field trip at school, coach a soccer team, or help in a nursing home; but generally it is we or our family members who benefit from our generosity. We may find, however, that as it did for the widow of the first reading, our generosity may be greeted with more generosity. The prayer of St. Francis reminds us of this when we pray, It is in giving that we receive.. Copyright 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
10 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 11 NOVEMBER 2018 PRAYER FOR HEALING VICTIMS OF ABUSE Let us pray for Mercy today for victims and survivors, that they may find some healing in the telling of their tragedies and the affirmation of their courage. Let us pray for ourselves, a broken Church, where some fallen clergy have killed the image of Christ it was thought to represent, where the facade of trust lies dissolved in the tears of children, and the hope of transformation is elusive. Let our spirits weep with the God of Love, and ask for Mercy to show us the way back to the pure heart of our faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord Amen.
