They put him in what seemed to be a no-win situation. Let the woman who was caught in adultery go, and he would have been accused of ignoring the law. Let her be stoned, and he would fail to show mercy toward her, contradicting his life s message. Jesus response teaches three crucial lessons: none of us is free of sin; we are not the ultimate judges of others; Jesus is the mercy of God, in whom we can always trust. In Christ, God does something new. When we give our hearts to Christ, we have the hope of new life, a life in which mercy reigns. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. S T. 3 The LORD has done great things for us; Oh, how happy we were! ~Psalm 126 NO ONE IS SINLESS Sin isn t a word we use very often in today s culture. Yet we must be honest and acknowledge that we sin. Otherwise, we become like people with a disease who are in denial of its implications we cannot hope to be cured unless we admit that it exists. Sin is a disease of the soul, a dis-ease in our relationship with God. When we sin, we fail to live as we know God desires. The truth is, no one is sinless. We all fail. We may have moments of intense union with God and live as we know we ought. Yet we also have times when we miss the mark. Because we are human and know that we fail, it is easy to adopt a pattern of judgmental behavior. We point to the splinter in our neighbor s eye while failing to remove the plank from our own. Jesus response to the scribes and Pharisees is clear on this account. Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. GOD S MERCY IS FOR EVERYONE The bad news is that we all sin. The good news is that God s mercy is available, always, at all times. We must be sorry for our failures and, if our sin is grave, take part in the sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus encounter with the woman in today s Gospel, as with so many others in the course of his earthly ministry, stands as proof that God is merciful and forgiving. As we continue to journey through the season of Lent, it is good for us to pause and reflect on our relationship with Christ and on God s infinite mercy. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company GOD S JUSTICE The story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery is sometimes considered as a put-down of the scribes and Pharisees. While their motive for bringing the woman to Jesus was to test him, they were technically trying to uphold the law. But they were hoping to get Jesus to cause a scandal by refuting the law, or, if he upheld the law, the woman would be killed with Jesus approval. Jesus had a better idea. He shows that God s justice is mercy and forgiveness. When he told them that the one without sin could be first to throw a stone, he knew that they all were sinners one way or another. And a sinner could not judge another sinner. He also knew that someone whose sins were forgiven would be willing to forgive the woman. That s what St. Paul means in the second reading when he says he did not have any righteousness of my own based on the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ (Philippians 3:9). He says he has given up the idea of making himself righteous (right with God) by keeping the laws of his people. Now he depends on his faith in Christ and Christ s forgiveness, which was shown in his death and resurrection. He is even willing to follow Christ in suffering and eventually death, so that he too can share the Resurrection. Why did Paul come to this kind of faith? Because he had been forgiven for persecuting Christians. And he had persecuted them, not because he was evil, but because he thought he was keeping the law. Jesus probably surprised the woman when he let her go. He was the only one who could have judged her, but he chose to forgive. Just as the woman was changed by the mercy of Christ, Paul too was affected by being forgiven by the One whom he was persecuting (Acts 9:4). So is keeping the law a bad thing? No, but the important thing is why we keep the law. We can do it like the Pharisees keeping the law as a status symbol: I m too good (or too important) to break the law. Or we can choose to follow Jesus way of love. Then we still keep the laws and commandments, only because they are examples of how to love God and love each other. For we too have been forgiven by Jesus on the cross. As we approach Holy Week, let us remember how much Jesus has done for us. 5 ENCOUNTER LENT Join our faith community and more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. During the 40 days of Lent, we will encounter the needs of the world. GAZA ENCOUNTER ONA We encounter Ona in Gaza, where, despite lack of economic opportunity, people pursue their dreams by building businesses to better their lives. How do your daily choices impact others throughout the world? How can your choices support the dignity of workers? SHAKSHOUKA 3 T fair trade olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 7oz can green chilis 1 28oz can diced tomatoes 1 T ketchup 2 t salt 4 eggs Heat oil in a large pan. Sauté onions and garlic. Add chilis including juice and cook until soft. Add tomatoes, ketchup and salt. Cook tomatoes down to a sauce. Make four holes in the sauce with a spoon. Crack the eggs into the holes and cover until the eggs cook. Leave yolks runny. Serves 4 LENTEN REMINDERS Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our Baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. The following fast and abstinence regulations are observed: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent. All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused. We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent: Almsgiving generously giving to those in need Fasting practicing self-discipline and self-denial Prayer reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God Lent is also a penitential season. It is a time to seek forgiveness, to look inward and to admit our shortcomings and failures. It is a time to regroup and to prepare. How can you spend your time during Lent? By giving up things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts or movies. By doing things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing food or clothing. By adding to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross and going to Confession. The Church encourages us to make confession a regular part of our spiritual life, especially during the holy season of Lent, as we reflect on our Baptism and repentance. Again this year, parishes are participating in a Lenten initiative called The Light is ON for You. Every Monday evening during the Lenten season, so that Catholics can come to or return to this incredible source of God s grace, mercy and healing. During Lent, the Mercy Chalice will be present in the Church. The Chalice is a symbol of the Sacrifice of the Mass which makes it possible for us to be present as Jesus Sacrifice at the Cross. You are invited to place in the Chalice written declarations of sacrifices you will make during Lent. We also encourage you to put prayer requests into this symbol of God s infinite love and mercy. As the smoke rising from the incense we burn represents our prayers rising up to God, on Holy Saturday we will burn the papers put into the Chalice representing how our prayers and sacrifices have risen to God.
