1 November 2018 From the Pastor In this issue Upcoming Worship 2 Thanksgiving Food Drive 2 Upcoming Events 3 Youth & Children 4 Pine Lake 5 Midwest Mission Trip 5 UMW 6 Calendar 7 Birthdays 8 Every Sunday, when you come to worship, you count! Your presence in worship is important. When we choose to become part of a United Methodist church, we are promising (among other things) our presence in the worshipping community. Worship is our human response to the presence of the living God. In worship, we glorify God, listen to God s word, respond with our prayers, and are sent out into the world to live as God s people. We worship because we all need to continue to be formed as followers of Jesus through regularly hearing God s Word, understanding its meaning for lives, and to be inspired to live as God s people. Christ s body (the church) is made up of diverse members. Each of us has our own gifts to offer. In worship, we are there to support each other through friendship, encouragement and our prayers. It matters that you are there! When you are not there, you are missed. You count for another reason. The first three Sundays in November -- November 4th, November 11th and November 18th -- we will be taking a straw poll for our Welcoming Statement. This statement was created by our Reconciling Ministries Team, and was later adopted unanimously by the Administrative Council. Members and those who attend regularly will be asked to vote on one of these three Sundays: would you approve this statement and vote to become a Reconciling Congregation if the final vote were held today? Paper ballots will be included in the bulletins, and there will be a box in fellowship hall where you can place them. If you cannot be in worship any of those Sundays and would like to participate in the straw poll, please call the church and a ballot will be mailed to you. A straw poll is informal and non-binding. Based on the results of the straw poll, the Administrative Council will then decide how on proceeding to a formal vote. Upcoming Events Nov. 17 Thanksgiving Food Distribution Day Nov. 17 Holly Jolly Light Parade Not just on these three Sundays in November, but every Sunday, you count! I am so grateful for all you do to support the ministry of First United Methodist Church through your prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. We are here to serve the community. Together, we are known in the community as the church that helps people. Thanks be to God. Nov. 22 Thanksgiving Day Grace and peace. Pastor Marianne Pastor Marianne can be reached at the office or by cell phone

3 Page 3 Confirmation The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our mission at First UMC Baraboo is Helping People Say Yes to God. Our unique way of making disciples is to move people through the following process: Come as you are, be inspired, explore faith, connect with God, join together and help others. In Confirmation, youth intentionally experience life in the church for a year. They prepare to decide if they will choose to follow Christ, say yes to the questions asked at their baptism, and become members of First UMC Baraboo. We have five seventh and eighth graders in the Confirmation Class: Jonathan Eisner, Grayson Lutz, Shelby Martina, Ethan Shrake and Henry Watson. Confirmation Classes begin November 11 th at 9:15 a.m. in the youth room. Other 2018 dates for Confirmation classes are November 25 th and December 9 th. Pledge Commitment Cards due Nov. 4th On Sunday, November 4th, is the time we ask our members and friends to return their commitment cards as we look forward to what God will do through our church this year. Without your support, our church s ministry could not happen. (You can also mail it to the church office by Nov. 7th to 615 Broadway St., Baraboo, WI 53913). Thank you! Homeless Shelter Info Meeting Nov. 4 On Sunday, November 4th after church there will be an informational meeting for all those who would like to know more about the effort to create a new homeless shelter in Baraboo. We'll meet in the corner of fellowship hall. All are welcome! Prayer Shawl Ministry Nov. 18th We will be starting a new small group at our church, beginning Nov. 18th. Members will be knitting or crocheting prayer shawls for people who need comfort and prayers. We gather as a group to work on our shawls, then continue or work at home, praying for the recipient of the shawl as we work on it. If you don't know how to knit or crochet, and would like to learn, you are also welcome. We will teach you! Our leader will be Carol Quinn, recently retired UM pastor who served the North Freedom and Denzer churches most recently. Carol has been attending our church and is passionate about knitting and prayer shawls! Our first meeting will be on Nov. 18th at noon, following the worship service. This will be an introductory meeting, introducing us to one another and to the ministry of prayer shawls. Come prepared to begin knitting or crocheting, patterns will be provided. If you are a beginner, extra yarn and crochet or knitting needles will be available for you to start. We will meet two more times in December, the 2nd and 16th, either after church or later in the day on Sunday. The time will be determined by the preference of the group. Those interested can sign up at church, or Carol at pastorcq@quinnclan.net. Start the Clock! Church Budget in 15 Minutes or Less - Sunday, Nov. 25 You're invited to stay after church for 15 minutes on Sunday, November 25 to enjoy coffee, cookies and music in the sanctuary and to talk briefly about the church's proposed 2019 budget. We promise that the meeting will be brief, clear and informative -- just a 5-minute presentation, followed by time for your questions. The Finance/ Stewardship Committee feels that everyone should be aware of our church's budget and contribute to the decisions about it. Copies of the proposed 2019 budget will be available in the sanctuary on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. We hope to see you on Nov. 25.

4 Page 4 Youth Update by Kenda Scott Our youth program is rooted in inspirational worship. We help youth explore faith and stay connected to God through Sunday school and youth group. In youth group, young people have a chance to be known/loved and they help others through hands-on mission opportunities. Two Wednesdays a month the youth group meet in the downstairs youth room 6-6:30 for games. From 6:30-7:30 we focus on activities that help them continue to explore their journey of faith and be the hands and feet of Jesus. In November, the youth will meet on these Wednesdays: 11/7 and 11/14. Youth making treats for Cup O Heaven Care Sunday school schedule is as follows: Nov. 4th (1st Sunday of the Month): Coffee with Emily. Youth meet at the church at 9:15 and walk togeth er to the Coffee Bean. Nov. 11th (2nd Sunday of the month): Confirmation (starting in November). Older youth that are not in Con firmation will help with younger children's Sunday school and/or work in the AV booth. Nov. 18th (3rd Sunday of the Month): Youth prepare breakfast treats for Cup of Heaven Café with some faith content offered as the youth work in the kitchen. Nov. 25th (4th Sunday of Month): Confirmation for middle school youth. Older youth will be invited to help with Sunday school and/or work in the AV booth. Children s Update by Yulia Yankovskaya Look at how good and pleasing it is when families live together as one! (Psalm 133:1) Our Sunday school theme this year is At Home with God. Through Bible stories and activities during Sunday school classes, children have met several families from the Bible, have learned how Jesus gathered the disciples and how the church started, and have started exploring what it means to be a part of God s family. The SPIRIT night program for children this school year continues to be formed of four elements: Learning & Exploring, Arts & Crafts, Service & Outreach, and Playing Games & Making Friends. Each Wednesday of the month is dedicated to one of these themes. In September as a part of Learning & Exploring children learned about fishing in Bible times and in the present day, and got acquainted with the Christian symbol of the fish. Thank you Don and Diana Fox for leading the session! In October during the Learning & Exploring component, children learned about shepherds and their daily tasks, and became familiar with the 23rd Psalm, which describes the Lord as our shepherd. As a part of the Arts & Crafts component, children made cards for college students. Thank you Donna Taapken for leading the activity! Children also created fall centerpieces for the Fellowship Hall and made beautiful fall leaves that are displayed on the windows of the Nursery and downstairs in the big room. As a part of the Service & Outreach component children made Thanksgiving cards for Meals on Wheels. SPIRIT nights in November will be devoted to preparation for our Christmas program, which will be presented on December 16 during worship.

5 Page 5 Parsonage Solar Update Do you speak Spanish can you help? If you know how to speak Spanish, and could be available as a translator for Pastor Marianne on occasion, please let her know. She recently needed to call Pastor Procopio Arellano from Reedsburg UMC to provide assistance to an individual who came to the church, looking for a place to pray. He did not speak English and she did not speak Spanish and needed a translator. Thanks for your help. (October 29, 2018) kwh 5.16 MWh Pastoral Care Training If you are interested in knowing more about being trained in pastoral care through the Stephens Ministry, please speak to Pastor Marianne. It may be possible for you to receive training along with others at Concordia UMC in Prairie du Sac. 7, lb Laypersons Needed There is a need for more laypersons on the Conference Board of Trustees (this is a committee of the Annual Conference, not our local church). The Conference Board of Trustees makes decisions on the use of property that is owned by the Annual Conference. This group meets four times a year. Two meetings are in person at the conference office in Sun Prairie and two meetings are done by phone. If you are interested in knowing more, please speak to Pastor Marianne and she can get you in touch with the chair of this committee so you can learn more. WINTER RETREAT at Pine Lake!!! Profile Profile by Janet Brice In anticipation of the 150 th anniversary of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations in 2019, I'm going to share stories of some of our current members' UMW experiences. Get to know Helen Moyer! Helen was born and raised in Ohio. She met her husband, Maurice, in high school. He was her first date and the rest is history. They were married 70 ½ years. Maurice and Helen and their daughter, Dianna, moved to Baraboo from Wilmington, Ohio in One of their very first visitors was Lou Ann Hirschinger (now Ward) who lived about half a block away. She brought them a plate of brownies to welcome them to the neighborhood. The family joined the church a year or two later but Helen didn't become involved in UMW until sometime in the 80s when she finished working. She appreciates the many lasting friendships she made. She still occasionally runs across a recipe that came from a UMW friend. In later years, her circle had breakfast meetings at Pierce's Restaurant and later at the Log Cabin. Occasionally they met in people's homes. They always had devotions and someone would give program. Helen never held a district or state office, but had offices within circle. She remembers the fun of sorting through lots of bags of stuff for the semi-annual rummage sales. And that the tables would be piled high with merchandise. The Old-Fashioned Day socials were quite an undertaking as well, preparing the food in the basement kitchen and hauling everything up to the lawn. She also helped with the prep work for Mary Hein's Methodist Mince project, served faithfully on the kitchen crew for funerals, and attended the various UMW gatherings. In addition to her daughter, Helen has two grown grandsons Jayson Moyer and Jesse Burns. The family gathered on October 21 to celebrate her birthday. She is 95 years young.
