For 41 years of their marriage, the Kenosha couple have been diligent and steadfast in their quest to help the hunger within our community. Greg and Mary, parishioners of St. Mary, have year-after-year been using their backyard as a garden to grow fruits and vegetables. I had the opportunity to see their beautiful garden and take a load of eggplant, garlic, onion, and tomatoes to the Shalom Center on their behalf. A big Thank You to Greg and Mary for making an impact in our community. Pictured: Herbs & potatoes being grown in a special raised box. Each day started off with us preparing activities for that day, including making small and large group discussions, planning games, and acting out skits. Then around 11 o clock, we grabbed our lunches and moved down to the cafeteria where we ate with the kids. The kids ranged in age from about five to eight. Instead of our group sitting together away from the kids, we integrated the kids between each one of us, so we could talk to them more easily. After their food was eaten and hands were washed, we went back upstairs and started off with an introductory game. Then we went on to a Bible skit, memory verse, large group, games, and small groups. We ended the day with a craft and free time. We worked with some amazing children at Lynhurst. They were so excited to see us, and every day when we came in, they would yell, They re here! The big kids are here! We always sat with the kids at lunch, and they swarmed us. Several of us had children who attached themselves to us and followed us everywhere. One of the children s favorite activities was to sing the Fruit of the Spirit song, and belt out, LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KIND-GO-ESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND SELF-CONTROL! They always stumbled over the kindness and goodness, squishing them together, but came in strong on gentleness and self-control. As the craft one of the days, we made friendship bracelets. It was chaos, string everywhere, the room occasionally filled with the ominous click-click of falling beads, but our kids absolutely loved it, and so did we, despite the chaos. It was little things like the bracelets that helped show us that these kids really loved us. They were rambunctious, loud, and impossible to keep focused for more than 5 minutes, but they were incredibly loving. Our kids didn t come from the greatest situations, but they gave their affection freely. We encountered God in very powerful ways on this trip. Each day of service, we found Him in the joy and excitement of the children. The impact of simple gestures, such as holding their hand or making a friendship bracelet for them, revealed how they welcomed the love of Jesus we were bringing to them, and receiving from them. We also found God through daily devotions, praise and worship music, and church group discussions. In daily devotions, we explored the perspectives that others have, the possibilities that God opens up for us, the passions that God has instilled in us, and the pursuits that God wants us to follow. While singing praise and worship music, we connected to God in an atmosphere of peace and openness. Church group time allowed us to share how we found God each day and reflect on Bible passages about grace, mercy, and service. This trip has deepened our individual relationships with God, and it has changed our perspectives. As our mission trip comes to an end, we re taking away a new perspective on how we see God and the endless possibilities he has for us. We get into a true service mindset on mission trip, because we have removed ourselves from distractions, and dedicated our week to God and others. That mindset makes it easier to serve others with a willing open heart, and we bring that mindset home with us. We learned so much on this trip about ourselves, and others, that helped us to grow in maturity and faith. We ll all so excited for next trip, and would encourage anyone who wants to serve, explore their faith, and have a great time to join us.

7 Deacon Wilson s Wisdom... CHILD S VIEW Even though life is better for children today than any other time in the past, children remain defenseless. In ancient times, life for children was indeed precarious. During Jesus lifetime, infant mortality was above 30%, and over half of the children who survived infancy, died by the time they were 16. Today, children can be abused, coerced, exploited and mistreated without much notice. Tragically, we see pictures of missing children posted in many public places. In America, 13 million children or one child in 6 is malnourished. We have improved the lives of children since ancient times, but far too many children still experience poverty and violence. In ancient times, children had no legal rights and were regarded as the property of their fathers, who had indisputable authority over them. Therefore, to welcome and serve children would be to expect nothing in return except the blessing of helping one of God s least ones. Just as Jesus identified with the hungry, the homeless, the poor and the marginalized, so he also was identified with helpless children. Jesus placed a child in the midst of his disciples and told them to emulate the child. He reminded them of the innocence that they had outgrown and of the ambition they had acquired. Learning from children caused them to rethink their desire to rank first among themselves. Our Gospel reminds us: If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. It is interesting that the word talya, or child in Aramaic, can also mean servant. To act as a servant means to welcome everyone, to forfeit status, to reshape ambition, and to accept the challenge of humble service. That was the role of his disciples who were called to humbly serve the little ones as Jesus did. For Jesus, becoming child-like meant remembering and believing that life is Tell me what God feels like. I m starting good, people are good, and nothing the world offers can ever change that. Children hold a special attraction for Jesus, perhaps because it is through their powerlessness that they are able to continue to carry into the world new thoughts---unique pieces of God s divine plan. Receiving children, as our Gospel to forget. asks today, means we continue to be truthful, loving and spontaneous long after we have outgrown childhood. What is it about children that attracted them to Jesus? Karl Rahner explained it this way: In the child, an adult begins who must undergo the wonderful adventure of becoming a child of God, for this is the task of maturity. Because they are on their way toward adulthood, children are able to relish their childhood while becoming more mature, usually by trial and error. Jesus knows, and many parents know that children have a unique way of viewing the world. This story illustrates a child s unique view of the world: A fouryear-old daughter was very curious about her newborn baby brother. She begged her parents to allow her to talk to him alone. Her parents were somewhat skeptical, but they noticed that she was always kind and loving when the family was together, so they finally agreed to allow her a private visit. As the parents pressed their ears and eyes to the crack in the bedroom door, they saw their daughter quietly put her face close to her baby brother and whisper to him, Baby, tell me what God feels like. I m starting to forget. Such a child-view of life reminds us that the movement from childhood to adulthood need not cause us to forget what God feels like. ~ Deacon Wilson Shierk (262) Fax accurateprintcom@sbcglobal.net of Kenosha Dan & Ann Kurpis Owner, Manager Parish Members th Place (262) St. Mary Catholic Church stmarycatholic.weshareonline.org Fax Hr.
