7 Deacon Wilson s Wisdom... EVERY CHILD S NAME From the creation narrative in the book of Genesis the Lord said: Whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. In the world of first century Israel, a name often indicated not only the identity of a person, but also their mission. The Lord s messenger said to Mary, You will name your son Jesus, and to Zechariah, You will name your son John. From our first reading we hear Isaiah proclaim: The Lord called me from birth, from my mother s womb he gave me my name. And his mission: I will make you a light to the nations Today, when parents bring their child to church to be baptized, the first question asked of them is: What name have you given your child? Taking into account family traditions and family favorites, the list of names is narrowed down to one---the name given to the newborn child for all eternity. Today s gospel retells the story of the naming and birth of John the Baptist, a story similar to the naming and birth of Jesus himself. Both were named by divine messenger, both were born to women the world did not expect to become mothers, and both were named for a vital mission destined to change the world. This son born to Zechariah and Elizabeth was named John, which means in Hebrew: Yahweh s gift or Yahweh has shown favor. It was John s mission to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus. John became the herald proclaiming a message to make ready the world for the long awaited Messiah. It was John who first emerged upon the scene strong in spirit, with a voice powerful and prophetic, attracting and challenging many. He was the last of the Old Testament prophets---a fierce man with a fierce message whose speech and manner generated a large following. He played the role for which he had been born. John was God s voice, but Jesus is the word. John spoke of the promise, but Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise. John preached repentance, We are a generation of John the Baptists. and Jesus brought forgiveness. John called for justice and conversion of heart, while Jesus made available the grace that enables change and spiritual growth. While the name of John the Baptist is intimately connected to Jesus, John humbly reminded all who listened: What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. The people who witnessed John s birth remarked: What then will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. That same question is asked of us. What will we be? For surely the hand of the Lord is upon us. The Lord calls us from birth---from our Mother s womb and names us. We have been baptized as prophets followers of Jesus who can see clearly the signs of the times, and speak out against injustice, violence and poverty in all its various and hideous forms. We are a generation of John the Baptists who have inherited his role as herald demanding conversion and justice. We prepare the way of the Lord by living and acting in such a way that we proclaim to the world, See John---See Jesus! See me---see Jesus! It becomes our mission to turn the world upside down so that we reshape it back to the paradise from which it came. ~ Deacon Wilson Shierk (262) Fax accurateprintcom@sbcglobal.net of Kenosha Dan & Ann Kurpis Owner, Manager Parish Members th Place (262) Fax Hr.
