For those of us sincerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We commit to spending more time with our kids, but that one project still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today's Gospel is a small, intriguing look at this process in the life of St. Peter. First, Jesus' questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: "You are the Christ." Eager faith characterizes Peter's relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It's the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, "Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him." Jesus' rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter's caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as he declares, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don't follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. "'Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.'" Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every defeat is transformed into redemptive grace. "Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."

Fulfilled will help you *Explain how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament *Share the Catholic Faith concisely *Acquire a thorough knowledge of the Tabernacle s design and its function as a blueprint for the Faith *Learn how to answer incomplete and non- Catholic interpretations of the Bible *Examine your own faith and grow deeper in your relationship with Christ Join us for FULFILLED: Uncovering the Biblical Foundations of Catholicism-Part One at St. Irenaeus Church from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on the following Mondays October 1 October 8 October 15 October 29 November 5 November 12 For more information or to register, please call or Michael Shipe in the St. Irenaeus Faith Formation Office: or faithformation@saintirenaeus.org (A donation of $25 is suggested to help cover the cost of the course materials (Fulfilled Books and workbooks). Vincentian Parish Mission St. Irenaeus is having a Parish Mission offered by the Vincentian Mission Center. It will begin with the weekend Masses at St. Irenaeus on Saturday, October 20th and Sunday, October 21st. The Mission will continue at St. Irenaeus with Masses and talks at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 22nd, Tuesday, October 23rd and Wednesday, October 24th. There will be a different talk each night. Parishioners from each of the parishes in our grouping are invited to attend. Fr. Richard Gielow, Director of the Vincentian Parish Mission Center, will speak and renew our minds and hearts to become more open to the power of God and the love of Jesus Christ. What Makes a Mission a VINCENTIAN Parish Mission? It centers on the Eucharist. The main service is usually the celebration of the liturgy with an extended homily being the mission talk. Major emphasis is on conversion and reconciliation. One day will be devoted to this. There is no fee for a Vincentian parish mission. A free will offering by way of a second collection after Communion is taken up at the conclusion of the mission. There is no charge for expenses. Prayer requests and intentions are accepted and are taken to Independence, Montana where they are placed in the chapel and prayed for every day at Mass for at least a year. There is a specific emphasis on the poor which is their ministry to those in nursing homes and the homebound. There is always one talk about reaching out to take care of those less fortunate. Mission preachers attempt to model the five virtues of St. Vincent de Paul: humility, simplicity, meekness, mortification and zeal. As our parishes become a new grouping, these Mission gatherings will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to open our hearts to God and to gather in faith, prayer and fellowship.
6 jxx~äç Zâ wx yéü Wt Äç cütçxü Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time On the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear in Mark's Gospel as Jesus tell his disciples about his passion, death and resurrection to come in Jerusalem. Peter tries to prevent him from going there. Jesus rebukes him and tells the disciples and us that to be a disciple is to follow him, not trying to save one's life, but by dying to ourselves and losing ourselves for his sake and that of the Gospel. That is the only path to real life. Thursday is the Memorial of Saint Andrew Kim Taegŏn, priest and martyr and Saint Paul Chŏng Hasang, martyr, and their companions, martyrs. Friday is the Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and evangelist, with its own special readings. In our first reading, Paul's wonderful First Letter to the Corinthians continues to feed us with powerful messages about good community behavior, the Eucharist and the mystery of the Resurrection. We experience more of the beauty of Luke's Gospel this week. Jesus heals the slave of a Roman officer, praising the officer's faith. He encounters a widow whose only son had died. He was moved with pity and raises the son from the dead. Jesus tells the people how inconsistent their responses are. At a dinner, Jesus encounters a weeping, sinful woman who washes his feet with her tears. So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. We hear that Jesus is accompanied by a group of women who provided for them out of their resources. Jesus tells the parable of the sower and breaks it open for a large crowd of listeners. On the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear Jesus tell his disciples about his passion, death and resurrection a second time. It is clear to him that they didn't understand the first time. He knew that, along the way, they had been arguing about who was the greatest. He gathers the Apostles and says to them, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Daily Prayer This Week This is a good week to imagine how much we are like Jesus' disciples. We clearly want to be his follower, and we do follow him. The humbling reality is that we are inconsistent. At the very time that Jesus is telling us that he wants us to find ourselves by losing ourselves, we are too often being competitive and trying to be on top somehow. Fortunately, he keeps telling us about the real meaning of discipleship. Paul lays it all out in this week's first readings. The parable of the sower is quite helpful this week. How healthy and rich is the soil of our own souls? Can we feel the longing we have to make our hearts more receptive to the message of Jesus? Each morning, as soon as we can after waking up, perhaps associated with some automatic behavior like putting on slippers or a robe or getting a cup of coffee, we begin the day in the presence of our Lord. We can get into the habit of greeting our Lord, Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this day. Even if we didn't have a good night's sleep and we are waking up fairly tired, this habit can part of our routine. Naming our desire for the day can become the way we begin our day with the Lord. Repeating it, with more details, as we encounter the people and responsibilities of our day, will deepen our relationship with the Lord. Brief prayers (which are really just conversations) sustain the connection all day. In one circumstance this week, I might say, Lord, here I am being that very hard ground. Please get through to me in the part of me that is still 'receptive soil.' Another day, I might catch myself trying to make myself look good and I can say, Dear Jesus, your reminder helps me right here. Let me be a servant in this situation, with these people -forgiving, listening, compassion and freer. Sometime this week we might encounter someone who needs us to be like Jesus - healing something that is broken, or even deadly and we can say, Lord, let me do your will, imitate your faith in God here. Thank you for being with me.
