3 Please welcome The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará ( or ), a missionary Institute of Religious Sisters, will speak at Saint Francis of Assisi Church for the Mission Appeal next Saturday November 11 and Sunday November 12. From our beginnings in San Rafael, Argentina in 1988, we have grown to over 1200 sisters missioning in almost 40 different countries. We strive to go where the presence of religious sisters is most needed. Although we are an international community, we have been blessed with many vocations from the United States, over 100 at present.this appeal allows us to inform of your parish about our mission work in Ukraine. As you may imagine, our missions in places like Ukraine are in great need of support.the Sisters work in several houses, providing education for children, teenagers, and young women.they also have a home for pregnant girls and women who are abortionminded.since most of the girls come from poor families, the Sisters also take care of the families by giving them some assistance. As you may know, Ukraine is not economically stable at present. For this reason missionaries do not receive much help from the local people who very often themselves lack even basic necessities. Thank you, Father Richard York, for giving us this opportunity to speak at Saint Francis of Assisi and share our mission in Ukraine. As we daily strive to help those in need, we are most grateful to all of you for your prayers, contributions and generosity, truly a grace from God and a consolation for our missionary Sisters. Please be assured of our prayers for all of you as well! United in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother Mary of the Incarnation, SSVM

5 Saint Francis of Assisi Church Pastor s Message November 2, 2018 Dear Parishioners, As we see in our Church this year, the names of our deceased Parishioners for the past year have been inscribed on two scrolls/banners on each side of the Sanctuary. For our loved ones who have passed we pray in November. Why do we pray for those who have died? We pray for those who have passed on as the Church teaches and we believe in Purgatory. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches in article 1054 that: Those who die in God s grace and friendship imperfectly purified, although they are assured of their eternal salvation, undergo a purification after death, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of God. Today some people no longer think Purgatory exists, but even in the Old Testament Second Book of Maccabees, chapter 12, verses 39; 4346, this Sacred Scripture reveals that: After the battle they gathered up the bodies of the slain and buried them... The leader then took up a collection among his soldiers to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a excellent way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. However, he did this with a belief in the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness; it was a holy and pious thought. Thus, he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from their sin. Therefore, if it is a good thing for us to pray for the dead, then there must be the possibility that they are in Purgatory. Since we on this earth are still on the road to perfection, then most of us die in need of purification. What will this final period between death and heaven be like? The pain and suffering of Purgatory will be the emptiness and longing we will experience to be separated from our Creator. The consolation will be that when a holy soul finds Purgatory, they will have the assurance of Eternal Life, promised and redeemed by Jesus Christ. Sincerely in the Lord, Fr. Richard York, your Pastor
