And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Dear Siblings in Christ, Pastor s Perspective Matthew 28:19-20 (NRSV) In the United Methodist Church there are several categories of clergy; the three most common types are Elders (like me), Deacons, and Licensed Local Pastors with each group being referred to as an Order. In mid October Bishop Elaine Stanovsky assembled a gathering of the Orders at Alton Collins Retreat Center near Portland to worship, fellowship (hang out together) and learn. The trainers, that the Bioship arranged for at this event were a Spiritual Director and a Therapist who specialized in teaching clergy better communication skills and self care practices. It was great to gather with my colleagues, but I am so glad to be at home with all of you! As an Elder in the United Methodist Church, I have the responsibilities to preach and teach, preside at the celebration of the sacraments, administer the Church through pastoral guidance, and lead the congregation under my care in service ministry to the world. Sometimes this is referred to simply as called to Word, Order, and Service. You get to hear the Word every Sunday. It is the proclamation of the Gospel and the celebration of Holy Communion. I will be doing the teaching part of Word when I hold Confirmation class with our youth beginning in Advent which starts on Sunday, December 2nd. These classes, which will take place on the 4 Sundays of Advent and continue into 2019, prepare youth to make an informed commitment to Christ and the Church. As pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, I attend to Order when we hold our annual church meeting called a Charge Conference. This year, that meeting will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 1pm to 3:30pm at ST. PAUL S United Methodist Church, 1730 St. Clair Road Idaho Falls, ID All of the UMC churches in Eastern Idaho will be meeting together on this day with our District Superintendent, Karen Hernandez. Although only Trinity s Administrative Church Council is required to attend, all of you are invited to come and share conversation with Methodists from Ashton, Idaho Falls, Shelly, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Aberdeen, American Falls and Chubbuck. Service happens whenever I am out in the community on your behalf trying to make the world, or at least our little corner of it, better! Providing Communion at the Pride Festival, visiting members and non-members in the hospital, and attending court proceedings with nervous defendants would be some good examples of Service. Blessings, Reverend Ruth

2 We have made it through another popcorn fundraising season, though there are still a few boxes that need delivered. Popcorn is more than raising the funds needed to sustain our programs. It s sort of a hardening off process. It s a lot of work. It can get emotional. Unfortunately, I usually see some attrition during this season; typically related to the time constraints of a family to sell popcorn, or the financial constraints to cover the deficit between popcorn sold and dues still owed. It tears me up to lose scouts, but I know from experience that the end result is a core group of scouts and families that are committed to the Scout vision, to raise up a generation of good leaders. Thinking back over the last month, some of my friendships became stronger. I definitely sense a core group of leaders and scouts that has evolved from last year. The strength of partnerships seem strongest among those leaders that were together the longest selling popcorn in front of supershopping centers for 3-6 hours every Saturday and some Fridays for six weeks. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another, Pr 24:17. However, there is still much work to do. In fact, though we have coverage at each rank, we have several Den leader vacancies. Trinity Meals The Scouts will be cooking an after church brunch for us on November 18th. Donations are gratefully accepted. The Fourth Sunday Potluck Lunch will be the following week on the November 25th. Share lunch and laughter! Membership Notes Jack Ringquist passed away on Sept. 26th. He was a long-time member at Trinity. Page 3 Cub Scout Pack 6 - Sam Bays Around the Church This is because we have two dens, a boy and girl, at each rank. We are also in need of a Pack secretary. Please prayerfully consider a leadership position in Pack 6. Scouting is more than sharing yourself with children you meet, it s about being changed by these experiences into the best person you ll ever want to meet. - Sam Bays There is still time to buy Restoration Bricks 137 bricks have been ordered. We are extending the date to buy bricks until the spring, a little closer to our dedication date. The Wesley Handbell Choir presents: A Night at the Manger The 33nd Annual Ring in the Season Concert Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 3pm Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 3pm & 7pm. Free admission - Donations gratefully accepted For more information: trinitybellsif@gmail.com First Presbyterian Church 325 Elm Street, Idaho Falls, ID Page 4

3 Scouting Troop 6 News - Robin Stewart Girl Scouting Troop 60 News - Nancy Stewart The scouts of Troop 6 had an interesting outing this month. The original plan was to backpack into Lone Star Geyers in Yellowstone park, but when the troop tried to get into the park, they were stopped at the gate. The Park Service was closing the road due to the number of vehicle slide offs due to the snow that had fallen overnight. Following the scout creed "Fast and Flexible" they quickly found an alternative hike in the West Yellowstone area, and decided to seek shelter at ASM Erick Lybeck's cabin. It snowed a lot. The scouts slept and cooked as planned - outside - and even collected 10 degrees below zero for the troop s -100 degree patch. Thanks to Harlan, William and Erick for this great outing. The Troop switched gears and provided a brunch on the 21st of October instead of having a breakfast before church. The brunch included French toast as a new menu item. The new format of a brunch was successful and lots of donations were collected to support scouting activities. The next event for the troop, on October 24th, is the annual "Haunting of the Elks", a spook alley that Troop 387 (Elks Lodge) puts on each year for the local cub scout packs. This year's theme is "Nuclear Meltdown" which should be interesting. I've been sending out (hopefully) informative lessons on the Aims and Methods of scouting, just to bring folks up on why we have scouting at Trinity, and the ways we accomplish those aims - Maybe you'll find it interesting too. The stated aims of scouting are: Character Growth in moral strength and character: we may define this as what the youth sees in themselves, such as, their personal qualities, their values, their outlook. Citizenship Participating citizenship: means a youths' relationship to others. They come to learn obligations to other people, to the society they live in, and to the government that presides over that society. Fitness The third aim of Scouting is development of physical, mental, and emotional fitness. Fitness includes the body (well-tuned and healthy), the mind (able to think and solve problems), and the emotions (self-control, courage, and self-respect). It's important to evaluate all our activities and planning to see how they support the Aims of Scouting. In the next newsletter I'll share the 8 methods that we use to achieve these Aims. Thanks for support all scouting at Trinity. We're growing our future. Charter Organization Chairman - Robin Stewart Troop 60 and Troop 394 The girls met at Johnny Carino's on October 11 to receive a check for $2,000 for the Silver Sage Council of Girl Scouts from the Eastern Idaho Corvette Club. Afterwards they walked to Orange Leaf for a treat by the council. November plans include working on badges every other meeting and having a Silver Awards ceremony for four Cadettes. That evening will include a Spaghetti Dinner. In January the girls will host a Cookie Rally Service Unit event for the younger girls. This Year s Advent Study! Jesus said that he came so people could live life to the fullest. - John 10:10 (CEB) Our Bishop, Elaine Stenovsky, has inviting us to come with her on a year of Crossing Over to LIFE beginning December 2nd with the first Sunday in Advent. Together we will study We Make the Road by Walking by Brian D. McLaren. Brian D. McLaren tells us: I ve written We Make the Road by Walking to help individuals and groups seize this moment and walk wisely and joyfully into the future together. It is a work of Christian theology, but people of any faith tradition will find seeds of meaning they can let take root in their own spiritual soil. It is a work of constructive theology offering a positive, practical, open, faithful, improvable, and fresh articulation of Christian faith suitable for people of our dynamic times. It is also a work of public and practical theology theology that is worked out by normal people in daily life. Rev. Ruth has already ordered a few of these paperback books to purchase for $13 or you can download your own if you prefer a digital copy. Grocery Cart Wish List for November! - Linda Milam Charge Conference Charge Conference will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 1pm to 3:30pm at ST. PAUL S United Methodist Church, 1730 St. Clair Road, Idaho Falls, ID For more information see Reverend Ruth s article on page one. 5 Trinity Restoration - Nancy Stewart Last month Partners for Sacred Places, part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, featured us in their magazine: Page 9 Other congregations have seen the National Fund as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to embark on extensive building projects encompassing a range of activities. Trinity United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has taken this approach. With encouragement from Partners for Sacred Places, Trinity contracted with Myers Anderson Architects to conduct a thorough building condition assessment prior to finalizing their project scope. The congregation knew that they needed to attend to some roofing and masonry issues, and wanted to upgrade some interior spaces. Trinity opted to continue working with Myers Anderson to create a wholistic scope of work based on findings of the building condition assessment, including masonry and roof repairs, renovation of ADA compliant bathrooms, window repairs, and a remodel of the warming kitchen. The National Fund has awarded Trinity a capital grant of $190,000 toward their $600,000 Robison Roofing has been at work on our roof and we expect the job to be complete in early November. We have eight roof drains that require replacement at an additional cost of $4,000 above the base bid. I recently thanked Tom Robison for the excellent job they are doing, I am very thankful that they honored their spring of 2016 bid to reroof our Sanctuary and Parlor. Alan Clark Construction has completed demolition on our bathroom remodel and the office which will be turned into our upstairs kitchen. Through this demolition process they have found: campaign, and the project is scheduled to be completed early in What a great synopsis of our project. Thank you for your belief in our church and public outreach through the use of our downtown historic United Methodist Church meeting spaces. We are very thankful for our congregation and public who have made this Capital Funds campaign possible. Contingency funds to properly manage Trinity Restoration are still being prayed about and asked for. One area not included in our base bid are the appliances for the warming kitchen and a washer and dryer for the boiler room. We have estimated this additional cost is $8,000. Any left over money from this final fundraising will be saved as designated funds for our stained glass restoration at a much later date. Construction Updates Areas in the basement floor joists that are cracked and will need to be reinforced. Unexpected floor joist spacing that will need to be changed to match the new toilets. The need for a ceiling heater in our warming kitchen as the new stove will cover the existing radiator. The current contingency funding need is $15,000. Now that the demolition is complete we are looking forward to roughing in our new bathrooms in November. It is based on a 1941 novel of the same name. Confirmation Classes Start December 2nd Rev. Ruth will be starting Confirmation classes for youth 12 years or older beginning on Sunday, December 2nd from 3pm to 4:15pm at the parsonage (1470 Scorpius Dr.). These classes would also be appropriate for slightly younger kids and adults wanting to learn more about what it means to be Methodist in a world that doesn t know about John Wesley (our founder) or his theology based on interpreting our lives using scripture, reason, tradition and experience. Because all study and no play makes us dull, between now and Easter, participants will play, eat, go on field trips, and have plenty of opportunities for laughter!
