2 Pastor s Point of View - Pastor Mark Hollinger It is the Lenten season and a time when Christians are to enter into a season of spiritual renewal. I like the way that the United Methodist Book of Worship summarizes the history and purpose of Lent as contained in the liturgy for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent: Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: the early Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church that before the Easter celebration there should be a forty-day season of spiritual preparation. During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when persons who had committed serious sins and had separated themselves from the community of faith were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to participation in the life of the Church. In this way the whole congregation was reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith. Lent is a time of self-examination and repentance. It is a season in which we look to those things that are holding us back from growing into the image of Christ. Every individual has characteristics and patterns of living and thinking that anchor them into one life the sinful life and therefore prevents them from moving into the new life a life of love, righteousness, freedom and joy. Sin is underplayed and under appreciated in our present day culture. We don t like talking about it much, and we most certainly don t like hearing about it much. Unfortunately, the times we don t feel uncomfortable hearing or talking about sin is when we re discussing the blatant sins of others. Jesus had a good comment regarding such a myopic approach. He said we shouldn t be so concerned with the speck of sawdust in our brother s eye when we have a log (or plank) in our own eye. Lent is a time when we are to inspect the logs that are sticking in our eyes and consider removing them. The implied wisdom in all of this is that upon acknowledgment and removal of the planks in our eyes, we ll be much more comfortable and enabled to see much better just who we are and who God is. When we employ the discipline of selfexamination, we begin to appropriate that elusive quality of Christian character known as humility. Continued....
3 Pastor s Point of View - Pastor Mark Hollinger The essence and purpose of Lent is to prepare ourselves for the sacrifice of Christ and to make ourselves a new creation. Anyone who runs a business knows that you take a yearly inventory and out of that daily inventory the owner must decide what is working and producing a profit and what is not. Out of that inventory discovery, the owner then gets rid of the ineffective items and then looks to replace them with something that will be attractive and productive. The essence of Lent is and has always been a season to consider how we can remake ourselves into a better reflection and image of Christ. (Luke 9:23-24) Transform campaign update: As of January 31, 2017, we have $762,195 pledged and have received $428,670. We are on our way. 8 The Giving Tree is back. St Marks is going to partner with Habitat for Humanity for the Apostle Build this fall. It is scheduled for Sept With an Apostle Build, the churches here in our community come together to build a Habitat House. It is the idea of going out into our community to serve others the way Jesus' apostles served. It's a way that churches can share God's love to those in our community by building houses. Each church makes a financial contribution of $7,000 and will help with the build for one day. We are using the Giving Tree as a fundraiser for the Habitat build. There will be a tree in both the DOCK and the back of the sanctuary. There will be special envelopes on the trees that you can pull off and put in it whatever amount your heart desires. Then place the envelope in the offering plate. We will be doing this now through the end of summer. This is one way to help with the build if you are not able to do the physical work but still want to contribute. Last year alone, Samaritan s Purse delivered more than 11 million Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes to children around the world. God used these simple gifts to change the lives of many boys and girls and their families, and St. Marks was a part of that outreach! We believe that God wants to use St. Marks again this year to send Operation Christmas Child boxes to children all over the world. We need you to join us as we begin to collect items for shoe boxes. We will begin accepting donations in March. A handy shopping guide that lists all the NEW items we ll be collecting each month is available at the Connection Center. Be sure to pick one up and take it with you. March Collection Items: craft supplies, books, stickers, cars, puzzles, dolls, plastic animals, balls, jacks, yoyo s, balloons, Silly Putty, jump ropes, harmonicas, action figures, coloring books
