Joby Mathew IN SUNDAY SERVICE: Rev. Richard Arold ORGANIST & DIRECTOR OF MUSIC: Mr. David Schaefer CANTOR & LEADER OF SONG: Mr. Joseph Neal FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT (A) From time immemorial God has promised, O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them. Then you shall know that I am the Lord. But this will not happen before Jesus weeps. He weeps in front of doubt: You want to go back there? He weeps in front of nihilism: Could he not have done something? He weeps in front of fatalism: Lord, by now there will be a stench. This is the optimum moment for God to have Lazarus rise from his grave, for then the event will teach us just how far we must go in trusting the power of Jesus love for us. Although dead because of sin, the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you. BAPTISMS & MARRIAGES: By Appointment only. Please contact a member of the parish staff well in advance. When the nurses and his brother told him how close he had come to dying, he realized he d been given a second chance, a new lease on life. The new Jim was as different from the old Jim as a newborn baby is from a child in the womb. No longer was he alone and confined in the dark spirit of depression. His tomb of illness had become a womb of new life, releasing him from bondage, giving him a spirit of energy and hope, and connecting him with a helping, compassionate community. When we hear the promises of new life and invitations to believe in this Sunday s scripture it is easy to think of something after we die. But we have already died with Christ in baptism and, like Lazarus, we have received a new lease on life, this time with the Spirit of God dwelling in us. He was raised from his tomb to embrace a new and richer life, we also have new and richer lives to live in the Spirit of faith, gratitude, love, and hope. LIVING GOD S WORD Lazarus was given a new lease on life, but that did not make him immortal. Eventually he had to die, just like Jesus, our loved ones, and all of us. Do we believe, with Martha, that our death will be a birth into an even richer experience of new life? TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There is a geography to the liturgy of baptism that distills the journey of faith. Each part of the liturgy is assigned to a distinct part of the church building. Baptism starts at the door. Then, the celebration moves to the place for God s Word. Next, as the litany of the saints is sung, there is a procession to the font. Finally, the movement is to the table, the altar of the Eucharist. There, newly baptized adults are brought to the sacred meal, or the parents of infants are blessed and reminded that their child will one day share fully in the table s banquet.

It was the time of the Western Schism and the residence of the pope at Avignon, France. Vincent was born at Valencia, Spain. He entered the Dominican Order at the age of 15 and was ordained a priest in All his life he felt that he was called to carry the gospel not only to Christians but also to the Jews, the Muslims and the heretical sects of the Cathari and Waldensians. In 1390 Vincent became the official theologian for the papal legate, Cardinal Peter de Luna, and accompanied him to trips throughout Spain. When the cardinal became pope, taking the name of Benedict XIII, he called Vincent to Avignon as confessor. Vincent naturally supported this pope and persuaded the courts in France, Aragon and Castile to do likewise. Later, when he saw the stubborn resistance of the pope in perpetuating the Schism, he changed his mind and announced that the kings of Aragon, Castile and Navarre should refuse to obey the pope at Avignon. St Vincent preached not only in Spain and France but also in Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. He is reputed to have received the gift of tongues and was renowned as a healer. The high point of St Vincent s preaching mission was between the yeas 1412 and He died at Vannes, France, while on a preaching mission in which he tried to put an end to the Hundred Years War between France and England. He was canonized in 1455 and is highly venerated to this day not only in Spain and Latin America but also in the Philippines. SAINT JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE (April 7) John Baptist De La Salle was born in 1651 at Rheims in France and belongs to what is known as the French school of spirituality. He was ordained to the priesthood in He was at first a canon but renounced that office in order to dedicate himself to the education of poor youth. Out of this grew the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, popularly known as the Christian Brothers. In 1684 his first twelve followers made temporary profession and placed the Congregation under the special patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, in 1700 the first difficulties arose in regard to the teaching methods introduced by the founder. Moreover, the Sulpicians reacted coldly to him because John Baptist did away with outdated traditional methods of teaching and insisted on the use of French rather than Latin. Although his original intention was to conduct only free schools for poor youth, in 1698, at the request of King James II of England (exiled in France), he opened the first school for boys of the aristocracy. The Congregation and its work prospered in spite of numerous trials and difficulties. He died on Good Friday of 1719, was canonized in 1900, and declared patron of teachers by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
