God s Word is the source of life itself. Creation awaits with eager expectation for what it cannot give itself, but what it needs in order to be complete, fulfilled, happy. We are waiting for the work of the Word. The seed the sower sows is the Word of God. All depends on how receptive one is to this Word. Will we disregard the Word when it comes our way? Will we receive it in a shallow way? Will we let worldly concerns choke it off? If we groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, that is, as we wait for the Word to take root in us, we will be assured of the hundredfold. Offertory Hymn 336 On Eagle s Wings Sanctus * Memorial Acclamation * Great Amen * The Lord's Prayer 120 REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Page 3 When we see the straight rows of crops growing tall and healthy at this time of year, we know that farmers plant very carefully to guarantee the highest yield. But that s not the way the farmer in today s parable plants. This farmer takes a big risk, it seems. Throwing seed around indiscriminately, some of it falls on the rocks, some on the road, some in the brambles, and, inevitably, some falls on good cultivated soil. Yet, even though many of the seeds die, this foolish famer s crop yields a hundred times what was to be expected. This is how God sows the Word. Like the seed, the Word of God is to be scattered indiscriminately over the whole earth, without regard to where the good soil is that can receive and nurture it. Even though the Word does not take root everywhere, Isaiah tells us it should not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. And Paul reminds us that the whole world will share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. LIVING GOD S WORD How are Christians to respond to this foolish God? We must ask ourselves if we are allowing God s Word to take root deep in our hearts and produce an abundant yield. We must ask if we are too stingy with the good news, fearful of being rejected. 4 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS Page 4 WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHURCH? We are looking for volunteers to help us with various ministries in our parish. Right now we need volunteers to the following categories: Acolytes: They prepare the altar and sacred vessels, and serve at the altar (Weekdays and Sundays) Eucharistic Minister: They assist the parish and the priest at Mass distributing communion and sharing cups (Weekdays and Sundays). Ushers & Greeters: These are our parish ambassadors who welcome all who enter our parish. They assist at Masses on Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, and on special Feast Days. For more information, please call NYS-WWME; ext 3. PAID, NIGHT-TIME, ASSISTANT POSITION AVAILABLE A fellow parishioner is seeking a paid night-time assistant/aide for a man in his early 40s. The position would involve staying awake and watching over him while he slept with a breathing mask on and attend to any of his medical needs throughout the night. Medical experience or a nursing background is a plus. Position is hourly from around 9-10 PM to 9-10 AM, and can be part-time or full-time depending on your schedule. For more information, or to apply, please contact Laura Murphy at (516) ST. HENRY ( ) Saint Henry was a major donor to warm the heart of the most ambitious campaign director! First King of Bavaria and later Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, he had considerable wealth at his disposal and used it generously to benefit the Church. Aware that by gratuitous consideration of divine mercy we were raised up to a position of regal dignity, he said, we think it fitting not only to enlarge the churches constructed by our ancestors, but for the greater glory of God to build new ones and to raise them up as the most grateful gifts of our devotion. But St. Henry was a good steward in other ways as well. He zealously promoted reform in the Church and encouraged missionary work and evangelization. He was a capable military leader and intelligent statesman, and he used those gifts to rule the empire. One commentator says of him: He shows that holiness is possible in a busy secular life. It is in doing our job that we become saints. It s good stewardship, too.

5 Page 5 Centenary of Society of St Paul Fr Joby Mathew, who serves here at St Monica is a member of the Society of St Paul, India Province. Fr. Joby along with Frs. Peter and Richard and Msgr. Modugno traveled to Staten Island for a special anniversary mass on Sunday, June 29. Congratulations to Fr. Joby and all the members of the Society of St Paul and the Pauline Family as they complete 100 years of their foundation. The Society of Saint Paul is a religious congregation of priests and brothers, founded in August 20, 1914 at Alba, in Italy, province of Cuneo, by Blessed Giacomo (James) Alberione. Its members are known as the Paulines. Faithful to the mission assigned them by their founder, they communicate the Christian message with the use of all means that technology put at the disposition of modern man. They are present in 30 countries around the world. They are active in many fields: editorial and bookstores, journalism, cinematography, television, radio, audiovisual, multimedia, telematics; centres of studies, research, formation, animation. Blessed James Alberione, in the footsteps of Saint Paul to become all things to all, has, besides the Society of Saint Paul, founded four Religious Congregations: the Daughters of St. Paul, Sister Disciples of the Divine Master, The Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd [Also known as "Pastorelle Sisters", works in schools and parishes by providing religious instruction], and The Sisters of Mary Queen of Apostles [works and pray for vocations for the Pauline Family and to the Religious Life]; four Secular Institutes: The Institute of St. Gabriel the Archangel (lay consecrated men whose apostolate is also that of the Society of St. Paul), The Institute of Mary of the Annunciation (lay consecrated women whose apostolate is also that of the Society of St. Paul), The Institute of Jesus the Priest (for diocesan clergy who would like to adopt the Pauline Spirituality to their ministry), and The Institute of the Holy Family (for married couples), as well as the Association of Pauline Cooperators. Together, they constitute the Pauline Family.
