2 Look Daddy, Jesus is Dancing! What an inspiring, uplifting Mass last Sunday as Father Don Schramm celebrated the gifts of his priesthood for 50 years. It was all so moving and beautiful: the diverse and unified family of God (with standing room only) the music, the food, and Father Don presiding and preaching so prayerfully, as always. I have heard many say that the Mass was their God/Jesus moment of the week. Also, many noticed that our San Damiano Crucifix was swaying the whole Mas. I credited the blowing wind of god the Holy Spirit, whom you could feel moving us all. But, the best is that one child said, Look, Daddy, Jesus is Dancing! Good News of Jesus Working in our Borromeo Family Just about everyday, I thank God when I see how beautiful our Church and grounds are. We are all grateful to our awesome, quiet crew who work hours almost every week in all kinds of weather. Arch Wayne is now retiring, but Les Echeles, Charlie Schroeder, and John Weber are continuing: GOD LOVE YOU! They do the lawn (bigger than you think) leaves, gumballs (many more than you would think) pruning, planting of the gardens, etc. Younger helpers are always invited to join them.! Also the flowers in front of Church always lift me up with a smile. We thank the Mary Dean Glosier and Marlene Schnieder, who plant them and regularly water them. You all help us give glory to God! She was dying. The nuns had gathered around her bed, laying garlands around her and trying to make her last journey comfortable. They wanted to give her warm milk to drink but she declined. One of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen. Then, remembering a bottle of Irish Whiskey that had been received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk. Back at Mother Superior's bed, they lifted her head gently and held the glass to her lips. The very frail nun drank a little, then a little more, and before they knew it, she had finished the whole glass down to the last drop. As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their spiritual leader. "Mother," the nuns asked earnestly, "Please give us some of your wisdom before you leave us." She raised herself up very slowly in the bed on one elbow, looked at them and said: "DON'T SELL THAT COW." In a recent reflection, Pope Francis encouraged Catholics to read the Word of God with the same enthusiasm as messages received on cell phones. Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

3 Rice Bowl Stories of Hope and Reflection Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, we remember that Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is important to help people live good lives, and so people must be paid a fair wage to provide for themselves and their families. Encounter Fernando Fernando dreams of becoming a businessman. He also dreams of a better future for his family, and this motivates him to sell cookbooks on San Salvador s buses. It s dangerous work for $10 a day gangs frequently stop and harass drivers and passengers but he keeps going, determined to achieve his dreams. It was his dreams that led him to YouthBuild, a sixmonth, CRS-sponsored program that trains young people in business. There, he found a positive community to help him pursue his passion, despite the challenges of life in El Salvador. When I tell my classmates that I want to do something, they tell me to try it and to not hold back. Training for six months with YouthBuild wasn t easy on Fernando or his family. Without his wife to support him and care for their two young daughters, the early mornings and long days might have been impossible. YouthBuild is a family because families help you realize your dreams, Fernando says. It s a fact he knows well. Fernando is putting his newfound skills to work. After graduating from YouthBuild in 2016, he took part in a series of entrepreneur workshops organized by CRS and is currently working on a new business plan. He is also a part of the YouthBuild network of graduates, youth leaders who mentor other young people and look for new opportunities for employment and growth. We have a saying, says Fernando. Once a YouthBuilder, always a YouthBuilder. THIRD WEEK OF LENT ENCOUNTER OPPORTUNITY We encounter Fernando in El Salvador where, despite a lack of economic opportunity, youth are pursuing their dreams of building businesses to better the lives of their families. How have you worked to better the lives of others this Lent? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. El Salvador CRS and the Role they play here El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. With a population of just over 6 million, it is also considered the most industrialized country in Central America. However, its people continue to face serious challenges. An estimated 1 in 5 El Salvadorans have emigrated. The income inequality between rural and urban areas is severe. Additionally, low economic growth and high levels of violence and insecurity continue to affect Salvadoran society in profound ways. The country is the second most deforested in the Western Hemisphere. Environmental degradation and global climate change make the country highly susceptible to natural disasters. Despite trying circumstances, Catholic Relief Services reach is widespread. CRS and local partners work with families to improve farming systems and futures. The organization helps youth build job and life skills. CRS teaches peace and works for reconciliation in communities hurt by violence. But this work cannot be done without you. When you donate to CRS, you do it all. You help families prepare for natural disasters, feed their families and protect the earth. You give young people an education and job training. You work to heal communities seemingly broken by violence and tension, and give them a way to build savings. In El Salvador, CRS work focuses on several areas, including disaster response, agriculture, youth, peacebuilding and microfinance. CRS work in agriculture goes beyond growing more crops. Along with crop diversification, the organization promotes soil and water conservation, reforestation, and expanded access to markets. CRS introduces practices that make farming more environmentally friendly and sustainable, even during extended dry or rainy periods. CRS Stats for El Salvdor People served: 19,872 Population: 6,141,350 (July 2015 est.) Size: 8,124 sq. mi.; slightly smaller than Massachusetts.

4 School News Our students have been generously donating to raise funds for mattresses for the Broader Vision Schools in Uganda. Nearly half the students there are orphans who live in the new school dorms. Broader Vision is supported by the Pan y Amor program of the Archdiocese. All of the classes are competing in PENNY WARS to see which class can come out on top. If you have any pennies you would like to add to our collection they can be dropped off in the school's main office. PENNY WARS continues through the end of March. SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO IS NOW ENROLLING! Saint Charles Borromeo School continues to grow and thrive as we look forward to the school year. We are still accepting enrollment for Preschool 3-8th grade. 5 An Opportunity to die to oneself Lenten Diaper Drive The Deacons of the Archdiocese are collecting diapers for the needy and this drive will take place three weekends in Lent. From Saturday, April 1 until Easter Sunday, on April 16, parishes will be collecting the diapers at Masses on those weekends, with the diapers remaining local for distribution, such as St. Vincent de Paul or food pantries. Keeping babies in diapers is very expensive, and this expense hits hardest on those who are struggling for basic survival. Keeping two young children in disposable diapers can cost$ annually and is an expense even felt in more wealthy families. Even if the family tries to switch to a lower cost cloth diapers, lack of access to a washer and dryer can derail that plan. Diapers are an item in need at all times of the year. Please give generously this Lent to the diaper drive. You can bring them to the Narthex and all your donations are appreciated. Thank You SCB for all your love and generosity shown to the poor. Most of her clients are from Africa, and once they arrive, no matter the weather, they arrive without warm clothes. 10 W w Third Sunday of Lent March 19, 2107 Scrip Cards What are they and Who should buy them? Scrip Cards are sold at the back of church after Mass, and they are a great way to support our parish school. If you are going to shop and buy groceries, wash your car, or go out to eat, why not do it with a gift card you buy that sends money back to the school? Most of the grocery cards give 4% back to the parish, where some of the cards pay back quite a bit more. Autobahn Car Wash gives back 29%. So, even if you do not have children in the school, and you are looking at a way to help out, that will not cost you any additional money.just buy a few gift cards. These monies raised will take the burden off of our parish, who subsidizes the school. This is such an easy way for ALL parishioners to support our parish school. All Tickets for the SCB Dinner Auction Must by purchased by April 17, 2017.

This surprised the woman for several reasons. In the first place, it was unlikely that a man would ask a woman for anything and even more unbelievable that Jesus, a Jew, would ask something of a Samaritan, a great enemy of the Jewish people. Jesus explained to her that our thirst would return if we drank water from the well; but if we drank the water Jesus offered us, we would never thirst again. After Jesus told her many things about herself, she came to believe that he was the Son of God and called others to him. Reflection for Families Jesus offers us living water just as he did the woman at the well. It is the water of salvation so when we stumble, we know that Jesus refreshes us with forgiveness. This is helpful to remember on days when we are disappointed by our anger, impatience, and discouragement. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family When you go to mass this weekend, be sure to invite the whole family to bless themselves at the baptismal font. On the way home, share your ideas about living water and the how the holy water of the font is living water for each person. Invite every member of the family to offer a way in which they can refresh someone at school, at work, or in the neighborhood by being living water for that person. Discussion Starters 1. I know Jesus is living water in my life because 2. I was surprised when someone unexpected offered me living water 3. This reading calls me to evangelization. I will respond (or have already responded) by Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference Contributions for March 11/12, 2017 Offertory envelopes: $ Loose: Matching Gifts Total Offerings: $ Help a Student $ Capital Improvements $ Black & Indian Missions $ Catholic Relief $56.00 St. Vincent de Paul $ WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God s gifts to you, given for others. March 19: 3rd Sunday in Lent In today s Gospel, Jesus says, "My food is to do the will of the ones who sent me and to finish his work. Through your almsgiving, you are doing the will of Father and finishing the work of Jesus. Know that your nickel, dime or quarter is multiplied by the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box. Lighthouse Catholic Media CD s The Parish recently purchased some CD s from Lighthouse Catholic Media, which are great for keeping us all on track for this Lenten Season. The first CD we are promoting is Building your Life on a Rock: Standing Firm in the Storm. Ralph Martin, an internationally known Catholic leader and teacher, discusses the challenges and the joys of being fully faithful to all the Church proclaims as true. Ralph provides practical advice on how to build our lives on rock and equip ourselves spiritually so that we can reach out to others with true charity. He shows us how our fidelity to the Word of God will give us the strength to stand victorious in the difficult age in which we live.

Around Town.
