2 Pastor s Column Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 26, 2017 JOURNEY TO THE FOOT OF THE CROSS - 10 THINGS TO REMEMBER FOR LENT 1. Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Commandments, 7 sacraments, 3 persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving as the three things we need to work on during the season. 2. It s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40 days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to Jesus Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him. 3. It s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless Fridays, and our personal disciplines interspersed, Lent is the only time many Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that s why it gets all the attention. What are you giving up for Lent? Hotdogs? Beer? Jelly beans? It s almost a game for some of us, but fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us turn away from sin and toward Jesus Christ. 4. It s a time to work on discipline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving something up, it can be doing something positive. I m going to exercise more. I m going to pray more. I m going to be nicer to my family, friends and coworkers. 5. It s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that it s about more than self-control it s about finding aspects of yourself that are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by suffering, dying with Jesus Christ and being resurrected in a purified form. 6. Don t do too much. It s tempting to make Lent some ambitious period of personal reinvention, but it s best to keep it simple and focused. There s a reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire lives growing closer to God. Don t try to cram it all in one Lent. That s a recipe for failure. 7. Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. When we fast, we realize we re all just one meal away from hunger. In both cases, Lent shows us our weakness. This can be painful, but recognizing how helpless we are makes us seek God s help with renewed urgency and sincerity. 8. Be patient with yourself. When we re confronted with our own weakness during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. What a bad person I am! But that s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see ourselves as he does, with unconditional love. 9. Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry, suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is almsgiving. It s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God s unconditional love. 10. Learn to love like Jesus Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and self-denial brings us closer to loving like Jesus Christ, who suffered and poured himself out unconditionally on cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him. Jokes of the Week While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, Are you a cop? Yes I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right? Yes, that s right, I told her. Well, then, she said as she extended her foot toward me, would you please tie my shoe? A little girl had just finished her first week of school. I m just wasting my time, she said to her mother, I can t read, I can t write, and they won t let me talk! Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

3 Please consider these suggestions in shaping your own family s Lenten Plan: Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten calendar daily to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As a family, read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten Journey-and guide your Lenten almsgiving. Prepare simple meatless meals on Fridays throughout Lent, in solidarity with our brothers and sister around the world. Be sure to visit crsricebowl.org to watch videos of the people and communities your Lenten gifts are changing through CRS Rice Bowl. Rice Bowl Success Stories occurring here in the United States- Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky Centro Latino, a Catholic Charities-supported non-profit, works alongside the Latino population in the Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky. That work includes what you may expect: distributing food and clothing, and providing opportunities for education. But Centro Latino also recognizes the importance of community and stability. "We need each other, says Ursuline Sister Lee Kirchner. Sr. Lee volunteers at the monthly Women s Meetings, offering reflections for the more than 100 women that gather. That s what we re trying to do: build a community among ourselves. For women like Katalina, a three-year attendee of these meetings, the community has given her more than the support she needed to learn English; it serves as an inspiration to give back. Women from the group volunteer at Centro Latino s food distribution center, assist in their local parishes and, of course, work with their peers in the Women s Meetings. As Sr. Lee notes, Shelby County is better for the work done by these women. Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowls for Lent Each Lent, we are invited into a season of spiritual reflection and renewal. CRS Rice Bowl is one way for families and faith communities to experience the season of Lent. Rice Bowl is the Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. 75 percent of your Rice Bowl donations support CRS s humanitarian relief programs in nearly 100 countries. Additionally, Catholic Relief Services allows each diocese that participates to keep 25% of the collection in the local community to be used for hunger and poverty alleviation programs. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, these funds support food pantries and other programs. Please take a Rice Bowl Today.

Part three deals with trusting God and performing deeds of loving service to our neighbor. The Aramaic word mammon does not have a negative connotation. It means property or money. What Matthew is pointing out is that since human beings are not self-sufficient, we are dependent on something outside ourselves. It should be God, not the material goods we own. This is not to say that we don t need material goods. But the reading goes on to remind us not to be anxious. Look at the beauty of nature. The birds do not sow or reap. The flowers do not work or spin cloth. Yet they are provided for by God. Human beings are worth much more than these. How could God not provide for us as well? If what we place first in our lives is God s kingdom and his justice, we will have what we need. Matthew concludes by reminding us to address each day s problems as they come, confident that we are in God s loving care. He is a loving father who holds the whole world in his hands. He will certainly care for us. Reflect with your family: How does it make you feel to know that God will take care of you? How much time do you spend each day wondering what to eat. or what to wear? What other things could you be doing instead of wondering about food or clothes? What things are standing in your way as you try to live as God intended? 14 Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2017 *Part 1* Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Word is a gift. Other persons are a gift. Lent is a new beginning, a path leading us to the certain goal of Easter, Christ s victory over death. This season urgently call us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God with all their hearts (Joel 2:12) to refuse to settle for mediocrity and to grow into friendship with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return: by the patient expectation, he show us his readiness to forgive (cf. Homily, 8 January 2016). Lent is a favorable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply. I would now like to consider the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (cf. Lk 16:19-31). Let us find inspiration in this meaningful story, for it provides a key to understanding what we need to do in order to attain true happiness and eternal life. It exhorts us to sincere conversion. 1. The other person is a gift. The parable begins by presenting its two main characters. The poor man is described in greater detail: he is wretched and lacks the strength even to stand. Lying beside the door of the rich man, he fed on the crumbs falling from his table. His body is full of sores and dogs come to lick his wounds (cf. vv.20-21). The picture is one of great misery: it portrays a man disgraced and pitiful. The scene is even more dramatic if we consider that the poor man is called Lazurus; a name full of promise, which literally means God helps. This character is not anonymous. His features are clearly delineated and he appears as an individual with his own story. While practically invisible to the rich man, we see and know him as someone familiar. He becomes a face, and as such, a gift, a priceless treasure, a human being whom God loves and care for, despite his concrete condition as an outcast (cf; Homily, 8 January 2016.). Lazarus teaches us that other persons are a gift. A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value. Even the poor person at the door of the rich is not a nuisance, but a summons to conversion and to change. The parable first invites us to open the doors of our heart to others because each person is a gift, whether it be our neighbour or an anonymous pauper. Lent is a favourable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day. Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love. The word of God helps us to open our eyes to welcome and love life, especially when it is weak and vulnerable. But in order to do this, we have to take seriously what the Gospel tells us about the rich man. 2 Sin Blinds us The parable is unsparing in its description of the contradictions associated with the rich man (cf. v. 19). Unlike poor Lazarus, he does not have a name; he is simply called a rich man. His opulence was seen in his extravagant and expensive robes. Purple cloth was even more precious than silver and gold, and was thus reserved to divinities (cf. Jer 10:9) and kings (cf. Jg 8:26), while fine linen gave one an almost sacred character. The man was clearly ostentatious about his wealth, and in the habit of displaying it daily: He feasted sumptuously every day (v. 19). In him we can catch a dramatic glimpse of the corruption of sin, which progresses in three successive stages: love of money, vanity and pride (cf. Homily, 20 September 2013). The Apostle Paul tells us that the love of money is the root of all evils (1 Tim 6:10). It is the main cause of corruption and a source of envy, strife and suspicion. Money can come to dominate us, even to the point of becoming a tyrannical idol (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 55). Instead of being an instrument at our service for doing good and showing solidarity towards others, money can chain us and the entire world to a selfish logic that leaves no room for love and hinders peace. The parable then shows that the rich man s greed makes him vain. His personality finds expression in appearances, in showing others what he can do. But his appearance masks an interior emptiness. His life is a prisoner to outward appearances, to the most superficial and fleeting aspects of existence (cf. ibid., 62). The lowest rung of this moral degradation is pride. The rich man dresses like a king and acts like a god, forgetting that he is merely mortal. For those corrupted by love of riches, nothing exists beyond their own ego. Those around them do not come into their line of sight. The result of attachment to money is a sort of blindness. The rich man does not see the poor man who is starving, hurting, lying at his door. Looking at this character, we can understand why the Gospel so bluntly condemns the love of money: No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or be attached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money (Mt 6;24). (letter to be continued next week)
