The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. Father, said the young man, I m so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for the long trip. The priest chuckled, I know what you mean. It s the same in my business. 3 Pastor s Notes Continued from previous page. Good News of Jesus Working in our Borromeo Family Congratulations Nathan Logan! Nathan Logan, an active member of St. Charles Borromeo parish is the recipient of the 24th Annual Archbishop May Service Award. Only one high school senior from each of our 27 high schools is eligible to receive this award, and Nathan is the recipient from Duchesne High School. All of our recipients are to be congratulated on the fine achievement in volunteer service that merits this award. The award has been established in honor of former Archbishop John L. May to recognize young people who have given extraordinary service, to recognize the schools for promoting such service, and to encourage all young people to dedicate themselves to lives of service. The awards will, in a special way, honor the memory of Archbishop May in recognition of his outstanding leadership and service; the motto on his Coat of Arms was Co-Workers with the Lord. I am sure that he would be so very proud of all of our students, as are we all here at Borromeo!. Congratulations again, and please keep up the Lord s Work! Prayer of the Week O Faithful Love O love, most almighty God, embolden me in your love. O wisest love, grant that I may love you wisely. O most sweet love, grant that I may taste you pleasantly. O dearest love, grant that I may live for you alone. O most faithful love, console and aid me in every tribulation. O most companionable love, work all my works in me. O most victorious love, grant that I may persevere in you to the very end. O love very close to my heart, who have never forsaken me, to you I commend my spirit. -St. Gertrude of Helfta Last Call for the Fish Fry If you have not yet been to a St. Charles Borromeo Fish Fry this Lenten Season, what are you waiting for? You will only have one more chance on Friday, April 7th. Please come join us in fellowship. The monies raised will help our worthy parish school. Not enough can be said for the people who work so diligently week after week. Thanks to all the families who also attend the fish fry weekly. St. Charles Borromeo has a lot to be proud of. Please attend this last one.

4 Rice Bowl Stories of Hope and Reflection FIFTH WEEK OF LENT- ENCOUNTER RE- SILIENCE We encounter Dita in Ethiopia, and see how her newfound entrepreneurial skills are providing three meals a day for her children even during a devastating drought. What skills have you discovered this Lent that can be put to good use in building God s kingdom? Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT PRAYER- For Dita in Ethiopia, whom we are remembering this week through CRS Rice Bowl, and all those affected by drought or lack of clean water, that lifegiving rain may revitalize their fields and their spirits. We pray to the Lord. For our community of faith, that we do our part to preserve our natural environment and be good stewards of the gifts God has given us. We pray to the Lord. CARE FOR GOD S CREATION Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Care for God's Creation, we remember that God created every plant, every mountaintop, every animaleverything. And God said that these things are good. We find God in these good things, and so we must take care of creation-both for ourselves and for all of our human family. CRS in Ethiopia Encounter Dita Dita, her husband and their seven children depend on the money they earn selling crops from their small farm in Ethiopia. But frequent droughts often mean that families like Dita s who depend on home-grown crops go hungry. And amidst the current, historic drought, more than 10 million people are struggling with hunger. But thanks to a CRS program that helps families prepare for crises like droughts, Dita was able to build a new house and open a small store. Instead of relying solely on what she can grow on her farm, she is able to sell items like pasta, shampoo and bananas. She earns a steady $400 a month. Before, I had to get eggs from my neighbors. Now I have 15 hens, she proclaims. Saving money and being able to borrow not only allowed her to buy hens but also a metal roof for her new house, a rarity for families in this part of Ethiopia. Now we have no problems with food, she says. Unlike families across Ethiopia that struggle to find enough to eat, Dita says her children eat three times a day, thanks to her newfound business knowledge. And what s more, all her children are attending school. When I was a child, there were no education opportunities, she says. Then, with a shy but proud smile, she adds, That s a big difference. More than 15 million people are expected to face extreme food shortages in the coming months. Drought has devastated harvests causing loss of livestock and seed shortages, and increasing the food crisis daily. Catholic Relief Services is responding with emergency food aid, water and help for farmers to plant the next season, beginning in March. Help Bring Vital Aid to Ethiopia For nearly 60 years, CRS has taken the lead in responding to natural and man-made disasters affecting Ethiopia's most vulnerable communities. Moving beyond emergency response, CRS' disaster mitigation and recovery projects in drought and flood-prone areas have rebuilt individual and community assets through non-food aid in the form of agriculture, livestock, health, nutrition, and water and sanitation assistance. CRS's humanitarian work in Ethiopia also provides livelihoods support to farmers and entrepreneurs, promotes gender equality, mobilizes for immunization and mitigates the impact of HIV. 5 An Opportunity to die to oneself Grief Ministry Meeting on April 2, Seasons of Hope TONIGHT! Lenten Diaper Drive The Deacons of the Archdiocese are collecting diapers for the needy and this drive will take place three weekends in Lent. From Saturday, April 1 until Easter Sunday, on April 16, parishes will be collecting the diapers at Masses on those weekends, with the diapers remaining local for distribution, such as St. Vincent de Paul or food pantries. Keeping babies in diapers is very expensive, and this expense hits hardest on those who are struggling for basic survival. Keeping two young children in disposable diapers can cost$ annually and is an expense even felt in more wealthy families. Even if the family tries to switch to a lower cost cloth diapers, lack of access to a washer and dryer can derail that plan. Diapers are an item in need at all times of the year. Please give generously this Lent to the diaper drive. You can bring them to the Narthex and all your donations are appreciated. Thank You SCB for all your love and generosity shown to the poor. Parish Council Consider Being a Part of it! The Parish will be holding once a month Grief Ministry meetings the first Sunday of the month in the John XXlll Room at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Sunday, April 2, These meetings will be on a monthly basis all through September.. In October, the meetings will be weekly on Sunday evenings until we have our All Souls Mass in November. If you are recently experiencing the loss of a family or loved one, please consider attending these meetings. Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. Come let us support you in your journey of grief. RCIA News Third Scrutiny, Fifth Sunday of Lent, Raising of Lazarus This weekend will be the Third Scrutiny for our RCIA participants. As our Elects prepare for this important part of their preparation, they will be reflecting on the story of raising Lazarus. As believers, we are all called to continue to pray for the Elects and the Candidates, as well as join them on their journey and closely examine our own lives. Who are we as people of faith? And who do we want to become? Sharing a personal meditation among friends and learning from one another can help us to get a new appreciation for our faith. Next Saturday (April 8) is the RCIA retreat. Lent is a time to journey into the desert and find deeper trust in God. Lent is about conversion, turning one s life more completely over to Christ, leaving behind an old way of living and acting and being healed through the love of God. In this period, Candidates scrutinize their life to identify weaknesses, temptations, and obstacles that stand in the way of discipleship. This retreat seeks to help Candidates enter the desert with Jesus seeking to be transformed from brokenness to whole, free and loving people. Please keep the participants in your prayers.

Even though Easter is still two weeks away, our Gospel today invites us to acknowledge Jesus' power over death, evidenced in the raising of Lazarus, and to anticipate Jesus' conquering of death once and for all in his death and Resurrection. We sometimes use examples from nature to help describe this mystery of our faith. Jesus himself talked about the seed that dies when planted in the ground in order to produce new life (John 12:24). Using that image and others, we find hope and confidence in Jesus, the Resurrection and the life. Gather your family today and read today's Gospel in its shorter form, John 11:3-7,17,20-27,33b-45. Write Jesus' promise from today's Gospel ( I am the resurrection and the life. ) on a large sheet of white paper. As your family talks about what Jesus means by this promise, decorate Jesus' words with symbols that will remind you of his promise of eternal life. Display this reminder of Jesus' promise in a prominent place in your home and keep it there until Easter. Pray that you will always remain confident in Jesus' promise of eternal life. Conclude by praying together the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed. Describe how tabloid newspapers have headlines that proclaim something that is too good to be true, such as Doctors Discover Immortality Pill or New Diet Reduces Weight by Breathing. Arrange the your family in pairs. Encourage them to come up with several examples of tabloid headlines that sound too good to be true. Explain that in this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus performs a miracle that seems too good to be true. Ask: What is it that happened in this Sunday's Gospel that seems too good to be true? (Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.) How did people react to this miracle? (Many people began to believe in him.) Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference Contributions for March 25/26, 2017 Offertory envelopes: $ Loose: Matching Gifts Total Offerings: $ Black & Indian Mission $ Matching Gift-Corporate $ Easter Flowers $ Catholic Relief $ WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God s gifts to you, given for others. April 2, Fifth Sunday in Lent The Gospel today, challenges us to see and believe the signs of grace in our lives: joy, peace, forgiveness, mercy and kindness. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings joy, peace, forgiveness, mercy and kindness to the hurting hearts of the poor. Lighthouse Catholic Media CD s The Parish recently purchased some CD s from Lighthouse Catholic Media, which are great for keeping us all on track for this Lenten Season. Week #3 CD Can You Trust God? Since the fall of our fisrt parents, humanity has been tempted to mistrust the love that God the Father has for us. Scripture scholar, Dr. Tim Gray takes us on a journey that addresses the pervasive misconceptions that God is quick to anger, that the God of the Old and NewTestaments are different, and that God doesn't have a merciful heart for us. You will see that you can trust our heavenly Father, who is truly one with His Son. These CD s are back in the Narthex, and are available for a small donation.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J.
