1 NEWSLETTER OF HOLY TRINITY ORTHODOX CHURCH SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016 spirit Church is not a spectator sport! "When the Church just becomes a spectator sport to compete with other spectator sports on Sundays..." I spoke those words near the end of my sermon on August 28th. They were not in my prepared notes; the words came out of nowhere, but I believe they summarize quite accurately much about the Orthodox Church today. But I refuse to accept this aberration. The Church is NOT a spectator sport in competition with other spectator sports! The Church is not in competition with anything except its own sinfulness and inertia. We come to Liturgy not to be entertained, and not to watch a piece of theatre performed by the priest. Liturgy is not theatre; it is the work of a sanctified people. "Blessed is the entrance of your saints" the priest intones at the Small Entrance, the entrance with the Gospel book. The Gospel book represents the good news of Christ and His entrance into the world. Who are the "saints" who enter with Him at the start of the Liturgy? You and I, of course - and if we don't feel quite saintly yet, all the more reason to be there and enter with the Lord, because we can only be made holy by walking with Him! Are you there at the beginning of Liturgy? Are you one of the "saints" entering with Christ? We enter as "saints" and we sing the Trisagion Hymn, praising the holiness of God. God is holy, and God's desire is to make us holy; the message runs consistently throughout the Liturgy. We hear the Scripture and the Sermon to guide our minds toward union with Christ. We are raised to the heights, where we join the angels in the Great Entrance, when the gifts of Bread and Wine are carried around the church, embracing all of us who offer our lives to God in thanksgiving for His gift of holiness. Before we receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Communion, we hear the words, Τα άγια τοις αγίοις - the holy for the holy! The holy gifts for the saints! Does anything in this brief and partial journey through the Liturgy sound like a spectator sport? Or does it sound instead like a vision of life in its ultimate beauty? I count myself blessed to have studied with Father Alexander Schmemann at St. Vladimir's Seminary. He was the most visionary teacher of life and liturgy. To the best of my knowledge, Fr. Schmemann never used the phrase "spectator sport"; he used far more beautiful and penetrating words: The liturgy is still the center of our Church life, unquestioned, unchallenged, unopposed. But it is in fact a center without periphery, a heart with no control on blood circulation, a fire with nothing to purify and to consume, because that life which had to be embraced by it, has been satisfied with itself and has chosen other lights to guide and to shape it. Are we embraced by the Liturgy, or are we satisfied with ourselves and our spectator culture? Soon we will start using the new Liturgy translation distributed to the parishes of the Archdiocese. Though I have my own concerns with some aspects of this Evening Liturgy for the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross on Tuesday, Sept. 13th, at 6:30 PM. new edition, I hope and pray that it will help the people of God, the "saints", to a renewed awareness of what Liturgy is all about. Here is Schmemann again: The Church is not an organization but the new people of God. The Church is not a religious cult but a liturgy, embracing the entire creation of God. The Church is not a doctrine about the world to come but the joyous encounter of the kingdom of God. (The Eucharist, p. 242) I'd like the new church year that begins this month to be The Year of the Liturgy in our parish. Come and discover what this could mean for you and our community. May we grow together in grace and communion. Fr. Constantine Sarantidis P.S. I will be out of town on Sunday, Sept. 18th. Fr. John Teague will cover for me. With over 2000 nominees globally, Kimberly was one of 100 who were honored with this prestigious award. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR (A message from Greg Tselikis) I am delighted to report that 2016 was another great year for Festival sales and attendance despite impossible parking conditions while the area was under street renovations and a major concert at the pier. Each of you who worked for the Festival s success by giving of your time, your financial assistance or your support should be very proud. On behalf of the Church I want to thank each of you. The Parish is indebted to each of you. God once again gave us three perfect days, and you all made the most of it. Old hands and young hands worked feverishly to serve the crush of people. The band music brought on the dancing and that special charm we offer that is not duplicated anyplace else in Maine. Many of you worked long hours for three tough days with little rest. I know many of you even took vacation time from work to help. And once again we were helped by our youngsters. They cleaned trays, made salads, helped prepare gyros, professionally handled the loukoumades preparation and service, and performed many other tasks with great enthusiasm. We owe them all special thanks. Words are not sufficient to thank you all for your the incredible efforts. Our Festival Committee members started planning in January. It all came together flawlessly. We really do have The Best Three Day Party in Town. Now it is time to rest and enjoy our success for a little while. The Festival Committee will host a fellowship in the fall to celebrate our 36th year of festivals. We have earned the trust of the Greater Portland community and they have rewarded us with their support by coming to dine and dance with us. Congratulations to you all. A special thanks to our dancers. They were great. The crowd loved the performances. Their costumes were beautiful. I hope we can see them next year. The women of Philoptochos and the men of AHEPA were well represented. We are grateful for their tremendous efforts. A plea to those who do not help with your time or your financial support: We need you. Don t sit on the sidelines. Give your Church a few hours a year. Lighten the load on your brothers and sisters by joining us. No help is too little. Younger hands must pick up when our older parishioners finally rest. Make time. You won t regret it. Greg Tselikis, Festival Committee Chairman AND THANK YOU GREG FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK OVER THE YEARS. YOU AND THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE DO EXTRAORDINARY WORK IN PLANNING AND MANAGING OUR FESTIVAL FLAW- LESSLY YEAR AFTER YEAR! THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY RECOGNIZES YOUR EFFORTS. THANK YOU. 5

8 Sunday School is now JAM (Jesus and Me). The teachers and Father Constantine decided that the name Sunday School is outmoded and does not reflect our Orthodox approach to religious education of our children. There is no higher ministry in our church than teaching our children the truths of our faith. There is nothing more beautiful than helping our children know and love our Lord Jesus Christ! Through a variety of learning tools the children this year will experience the love of Christ and will understand how important they are in God's eyes. Please don't deprive the children in your family the blessing of being together in worship and learning on Sunday! Classes Begin September 25th. The 2016 Greek School Graduation took place on Wednesday May 11 at the Parish house. This year, we only had one graduate, Pavlos Casvikes, and all the other kids received certificates and gifts. A big thanks to all the parents for helping out in any way they can with the Greek school. Kyria and I greatly appreciate all the help. Thank you Kyria Varipatis for another great year and your tireless work with our kids! I also want to make a couple of corrections to the Greek Independence Day contributions that were listed in the June newsletter: Mr. and Mrs. James Vorias contributed $600 Mr. and Mrs. Marcos Rigas contributed $200 Mr. and Mrs. Kostas Kapothanasis contributed $100 I look forward to seeing everyone as we begin another year of Greek School classes.
