1 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING FROM THE PASTOR: For the weeks to come I will be sharing with you something I call the Mass Participation Primer. These are my reflections on the Mass, the importance and meaning of it and how it relates to each of us personally. Liturgical prayer and worship involves the whole person. It engages us on both the interior and exterior levels. Catholicism is a wonderfully interactive religion. We become physically involved in the mysteries of our faith. This occurs through ritual enactments, symbolic gestures, performative utterances, acclamations and singing. Liturgy engages not only our intellect, but also our senses. Understood properly, you could say it is a very sensual religion. We are not angelic beings. We re not pure spirit. Our spirit expresses itself through our body. In liturgical prayer and worship there is a unity of the interior and exterior person. FINANCES: Last week s Offertory collection amounted to $2,612.10, 90 identifiable contributors with an average donation of $ The amount for Catholic Education amounted to $611. The second collection this weekend is for Catholic Campaign for Human Development. There is no second collection next week. Thank you for your continued generosity. ALTAR SOCIETY: Preparation for November 28/29 will be done by Marilyn Triantos, Susan Ganzer and Becky MacDonald. We are looking for a few new teams for the upcoming year. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BINGO: The St. Mary s Council of the K. of C. invites all parishioners and the general public to join them for bingo games each Friday night at Father Andrew White School. Games begin at 6:55pm. This fundraising event supports charitable, athletic, and educational programs conducted by the Knights. LADIES DAY OF PRAYER: On Monday, November 30 th, St. Michael s Ladies of Charity are sponsoring a Day of Prayer at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Lexington Park. The day begins at about 9:30am and will adjourn by 2:30pm. Bring a brown bag lunch. Drinks and dessert are provided. Priests of the neighboring parishes will give short talks. There will be Mass, Rosary and confessions. Invite your friends. Come, even if you can only attend one session, we d love to have you. Such a wonderful way to start Advent. BEAR HUGS FOR HEALING is a program that delivers stuffed bears to hospitalized children during the holidays. To give a sick child a bear hug this Christmas, please drop off your donated bears at Heavenly Presents store, Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, Maryland before December 9. Store hours are limited, however, there is a drop box by the inside door. Your taxdeductible monetary donations will be used to purchase bears at a discounted price! Please make checks payable to the Bread of Life Center for Peace and mail them to: PO Box 338, Leonardtown, MD You may also purchase a bear or make donations through our website at -- click on Bear Hugs Project. Due to health and safety concerns, donated bears must be newly purchased and delivered in their original packing with store tags attached. Sorry, used stuffed bears are not accepted by the hospitals. Bear Hugs is an inspiration received in thanksgiving for favors granted through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima and St. Jude. 3 WE ARE IN NEED OF A BABY CHANGING TABLE. Every week, during mass, we have parents bringing babies downstairs looking for a place to change them. If you have a changing table that is no longer in use, please consider donating it to the church. Also a Koala mounted changing station cost $180, including shipping. If 18 of us donated $10 we could have that covered. If you are interested in contributing to this cause, please call the rectory or put $10 in an envelope marked Changing Station and place it in the collection basket. CATHOLIC CHARITIES is not threatening to end its services if a same sex marriage bill passes. Recent news reports have mistakenly claimed that the Archdiocese of Washington and its social services arm, Catholic Charities, are threatening to cease providing social services in the District of Columbia if the proposed bill to legalize same sex marriage is passed. Catholic Charities is vowing to continue its services even if a same sex marriage bill passes. However, the bill, as it now reads, will diminish the resources we have to do so. Why is that so? Because without a meaningful religious exemption in the bill, Catholic Charities and other similar religious providers will become ineligible for contracts, grants and licenses to continue those services. CHRISTMAS TV MASS: Will illness or disability prevent you or someone you know from being able to attend Christmas Mass? The Christmas TV Mass will air Friday, December 25, 7:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m., on WDCW-50 ( The CW ). The actual channel varies by TV provider. If you use an antenna or have satellite television, CW is on channel 50. Comcast and Verizon users normally will find the Mass on channel 3 or 23, and RCN customers on channel 15. If you have difficulty finding the right channel or would like to have the free Celebrate newsletter sent to someone who is homebound, please call the Archdiocese of Washington Office of Communications at The TV Mass also airs Sundays on WDCW-50 at 10:30 a.m. FAW SCHOOL NEWS FAW HALF TUITION RAFFLE - Tickets are now available to win half tuition for a student in the school year. 4 OUR LADY S PARISH CALENDAR CALLING ALL 4 TH AND 5 TH GRADERS: Father Young would like to invite all 4 th and 5 th graders at Our Lady s Church to consider becoming an Altar Server. There will be training for you on Wednesday night, December 2, from 6-8pm in the Church. Pizza will be provided. Please prayerfully consider whether God might be calling you to serve at his Altar. Hope to see you there! If you are in a higher grade and would like to start serving, please plan to attend. Help Father Young to recruit anyone you think would be a good server, and invite them to the training night on December 2 nd. EMMAUS NIGHT: Join Father Young every Monday, at 7:00pm for Instruction on the Catholic Faith, followed by Adoration, Confession and Benediction, 7:45 to 8:30pm. This will be a regular Monday evening event. Plan to take advantage of the opportunity to go to confession and to increase your knowledge in your Catholic Faith, and pray quietly in front of the Blessed Sacrament. MOM S DAY OFF: Parents, plan to go shopping, catch up on a few tasks or plan some quiet time to reflect. Our Feast of St. Nicholas retreat day for students, ages 5 through 7th grade will be Saturday Dec 5, 2009 from 9 am to 2 pm. This event is directed by Ms. Kerns and is open to all families in the parish.
