3 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 July 1, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Question: I don t have the gift of healing that Jesus exercised, such as in today s gospel. So how can I carry on his mission of healing activity? One thing notable about Jesus was what we could say he had a ministry of presence. When Jairus approached Jesus in today s gospel (Mk 5:21-43) about his dying daughter, Jesus immediately became present to him and left with him to visit the child. On the way, someone hemorrhaging was healed simply by touching his cloak; so he stopped to be present to that woman. When he arrived at Jairus house, he was present to the apparently dead child. In all cases, he brought new life into dark situations. I think that we have all known people who were dying, probably within our circle of friends, and certainly within our own family or extended family. Sometimes it can feel awkward to visit under those circumstances of impending death. Sometimes you wonder why you are there in the first place, because you know you can t change the situation and you would probably rather be somewhere else. The same scenario would apply to visiting a friend or family who has lost a parent or child to some unexpected and accidental death. You know you cannot change that situation, but something drives you to visit the hurting family. What we are experiencing when we reach out to dying or grieving friends is the very compassion of Jesus. It is that compassion that urges us to visit those who need consoling. And our compassion finds its release in being present to others in their time of need, just like Jesus. Consoling and comforting are spiritual works of mercy, and visiting the sick and dying is a corporal work of mercy. This mystery of mercy is supremely revealed in the life of Jesus, and as Pope Saint John Paul II taught us, it is our constant mission to proclaim and introduce that mercy into our daily life (Dives in Misericordia, 1980; #14). KNOW YOUR CATECHISM! Just being present to those in need is healing! Coming to the aid of our neighbor in their time of need, both spiritual and physical need, is a charitable action or work of mercy (CCC #2447). When we serve those who are hurting, we serve Christ who identifies with them (CCC #544). The Reverend Edward J. Smith, Pastor READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Am 2:6-10, 13-16; Ps 50:16bc-23; Mt 8:18-22 Tuesday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 10:24-29 Wednesday: Am 5:14-15, 21-24; Ps 50:7-13, 16bc-17; Mt 8:28-34 Thursday: Am 7:10-17; Ps 19:8-11; Mt 9:1-8 Friday: Am 8:4-6, 9-12; Ps 119:2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Am 9:11-15; Ps 85:9ab, 10-14; Mt 9:14-17 Sunday: Ez 2:2-5; Ps 123:1-4; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mk 6:1-6a PETER'S PENCE COLLECTION (HOLY FATHER) - JUNE 30 & JULY 1, 2018 This week, we will take the Peter's Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. Take an ornament with you, purchase the item and place it under the tree. God bless your generosity! Birthright of Lorain County The Shower for Mary was a success again this year and the Social Concerns Committee thanks you all. We collected $321 from the baby bottle campaign and quite a few well-needed baby items which I recently delivered to Birthright of Lorain County. I wish you could have seen the smiles of the volunteers as we brought in the baby items and gave them the check. Multiple clients were being taken care of while we were there and it was humbling to see their grateful faces and know that we are making a difference. If anyone would like to help out the Social Concerns Committee here at St. Teresa, just call the church office or me at pparkey20@gmail.com. It is truly a blessing helping those less fortunate. This September the Altar & Rosary Society and the Social Concerns Committee will join forces to sponsor a gently used clothing drive for Birthright. Watch the bulletin for details. Signup sheet in rear of church. Humanae Vitae--Proclaiming God's gifts of love and life to husband and wife. The papal encyclical, Humanae vitae (HV) written by Blessed Pope Paul VI in 1968, provides beautiful and clear teaching about God's plan for married love and the transmission of life. Visit under Marriage and Family, to help you deepen your understanding of these teachings. Please note, July 25, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Humanae vitae. God's Loving Design 8. Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who "is love," the Father "from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named." Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives. The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church. Jonathan Rudy, As the weather ST. EDWARD HIGH changes, so does our SCHOOL HONOR clothing. Please dress appropriately ROLL for Mass and all Ryan Parish F. Dunn functions Congratulations! and events. CHILDREN'S ENVELOPES AVAILABLE Families are invited to take a box of children's envelopes from the rear of the church for their kids. This is not a "fund raiser" but to teach children the joys of giving. It is more important that children give a quarter from their own bank than $5 from a parent's wallet.
