3 Page 3 February 26, Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections from Fr. Brian Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Four days after Christmas in 1170, Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the cathedral there while engaged in his evening prayers. His slayers were soldiers of King Henry II. They first demanded that Becket obey certain demands of the king, but when Becket refused, the knights hacked Becket to death with their swords, right on the steps of the altar. The murder was the culmination of a long-running disagreement between Becket and King Henry. Though they were once friends, Becket refused to be a yes man for the wishes of the king. From his position in the church, Becket resisted the king s efforts to collect taxes from landowners and on church lands, and to try church officials in courts of the crown. Almost immediately Becket s tomb became a place of pilgrimage for the faithful. And four years later, King Henry himself came and did penance there, to pacify both his conscience and his people. Because of Becket s faithfulness to God in the face of opposing claims from the throne, the church later declared Becket a saint. In the 20 th century, the playwright T.S. Eliot dramatized Becket s story in a 1935 play called Murder in the Cathedral. In the play, as probably in real life, Becket realizes that his opposition to the king will probably lead to his death. As a result, Thomas experiences four temptations, which in the drama are portrayed as actual characters, called tempters. He is able to see through the temptations of the first three, which are all forms of appeasing the king, but the fourth tempter s lure is more subtle. He advises Becket to do what Becket already knows he must do: continue his resistance to the king regardless of the cost. This last tempter, however, adds an element: Since resisting the king will likely result in his death anyway, Becket should embrace that idea and welcome martyrdom. Just think of the great glory that will come to your name after you die this way, says the tempter to Becket. You will be exalted as the great martyr of the church. The king will eventually be replaced and Henry will be forgotten. But you --- you will live on in the church s roll call to heroes. Pilgrims from far and wide will pray to you. Enemies will shake at your memory. And, of course, you will have a special place in heaven itself. Becket thinks all this over. Do the right thing, this tempter has said. That sounds so reasonable, but eventually Becket sees the trap in the tempter s words. Becket then speaks the most memorable lines in the play: The last temptation is the greatest treason: To do the right deed for the wrong reason. He then realizes that this tempter s name is Pride. Pride is the spoiler of good deeds. When we do the right thing --- say, helping someone in need --- why do we do it? Because we care about the person being helped or because we like the praise we receive for the good thing we ve done? Or maybe some of each? Who among us can escape that matter of mixed motives? Whatever other motives may be behind our good works, the mainspring of them will be to do the will of God. So we should keep our eyes on pleasing God and following Jesus. And insofar as we do, we will be moving in the right direction, regardless of what other motives are in the mix. Lent is a reminder that our life is a following of Jesus. May we pray each day for the grace of faithfulness to that calling. YÜA UÜ tç

5 Our Fish & Chips Dinner will be held on Friday, March 10th, 2017 in our Church Hall. Take out will be at 5:30PM. Eat in starts at 6:00PM Donations of water and soda are needed and appreciated. Tickets ($15 donation each) will be available at the rectory s office or after all the weekend Masses. Come join us! We had our meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 7:30PM to 8:45PM Points discussed : Church Hall Contract - contract was reviewed but not finalized, some items need to be looked into further. Church Ministries - Fr. Brian will work on organizing the existing ministries, some formation may be required. Fr. Brian thanked everyone involved in the ministry luncheon and gave an update on the Sunday Visitor s program, his personal health and a refund from the Partners in Faith program of $1, sent to our parish. The Filipino Society plans to have a Lenten Recollection in our church hall on 3/25/17. Pre-Cana meetings are scheduled for April and October of this year with Tony Uri. Grace Wolfe spoke about the luncheon for the less fortunate last Sunday, they served about 80 guests, the next one is scheduled for April. The Spanish community is organizing a talk on PAN & VINO (Bread & Wine) for April 1, 2017 from 7-10PM. They are also organizing a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine for 5/13/17. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21, Ash Wednesday Masses 8:00AM & 12:00PM in English 6:00PM in Spanish Stations of the Cross Fridays during Lent at 7:30PM Reconciliation Mondays during Lent from 7:00PM to 8:30PM

6 We received a check from the Diocese in the amount of $1, representing our parish sharing disbursement from the Partners in Faith campaign. We thank all those parishioners who participated in this campaign. It s because of your generosity that we are able to received this amount. God bless you! Give alms...pray to your Father...Fast without a gloomy face... Matthew 6:1-18 We have been shown endless mercy by Our Lord, and we must show mercy to others. This Lent, we can seek opportunities for generosity. Jesus teaches, that alms giving (works of love) includes making the needs of others our own, especially the needy.. Matthew 25:40 What shall we give to the needy this Lent? Here, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, you can choose several ways to help fulfill works of love : *Luncheon for the homeless --donation of cupcakes (drop off on 2/16 & 2/17) *Donation of new scarves, one-size-fits-all gloves and socks (drop off 2/16-3/16) *Care packages of new tooth-brushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant (drop off all of Lent ) *Packages of wet-wipes and small bottles of hand sanitizer (drop off all of Lent) *Gift cards to McDonalds, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts (drop off all of Lent) Thank you for your generosity.
