News Archive May 2012 Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon EDITOR: Kiply Lukan Yaworski, Communica0ons Phone: ; toll free: Ext. 844 Gala OPENING WEEK May 6 to May 13, 2012 Diocesan home dedicated By Kiply Lukan Yaworski With holy water and sacred oil, candlelight, incense, music and joy, the Cathedral of the Holy Family was dedicated and blessed May 13, 2012 in Saskatoon. In a three- hour Eucharis0c celebra0on on a sunny Mother s Day a7ernoon, some 1,300 people gathered to witness the historic moment in the history of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon. The joyful liturgy marked the culmina0on of a week of celebra0on that included nights of prayer, reflec0on and discussion, food and song, as well as an ecumenical service on the eve of the official dedica0on (see related ar*cle about gala opening week, below). Representa0ves from parishes across the diocese carried candles up to the altar to open the Mass of Blessing, placing their lights in a candleholder originally cra7ed for the 2007 Diocesan Eucharis0c Congress. Parishioners were followed into the worship space by an honour guard of Knights of Columbus and Catholic Women s League members, guests from a number of Chris0an denomina- 0ons, and finally by representa0ves of the clergy and bishops. Candles carried by representa0ves from across the diocese Led by Joe Kurtz of Assump0on of Our Lady, Kerrobert, SK. parish representa0ves from across the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon carried candles into the new Cathedral of the Holy Family at the start of the Mass of Blessing for the new diocesan home Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Saskatoon. [1]

Bishop Donald Bolen presided at the Mass of Blessing, anoin0ng the altar alongside Archbishop Albert Le- GaV of St. Boniface (who ini0ated the cathedral project during his 0me as bishop of Saskatoon); Archbishop James Weisgerber of Winnipeg, who is another former bishop of Saskatoon; and Archbishop Daniel Bohan of Regina. Other celebrants included Bishop Bryan Bayda of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon, Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie of the Keewa0n- Le Pas, Abbot Peter Novecosky of St. Peter s Abbey at Muenster, and many priests from across the diocese. Bishops anoint altar during dedica0on of new diocesan cathedral Archbishop Daniel Bohan of Regina, Archbishop James Weisgerber of Winnipeg, Bishop Don Bolen of Saskatoon and Archbishop Albert LeGaU of St. Boniface anoint the altar of the Cathedral of the Holy Family May 13, 2012 in Saskatoon. Cathedral Rector Rev. David Tumback, St. Paul Co- Cathedral pastor Rev. Don Hamel, and diocesan priests Rev. Ken Beck and Rev. Kevin McGee anointed the walls of the new cathedral church, marking large crosses on four pillars of the building with the Sacred Chrism. The sacred oil had been brought to the new cathedral the week before, sent forth in a special celebra0on at St. Paul s, which had served as cathedral since the diocese was created in (See ar*cle below about the May 6 celebra*on sending forth the Sacred Chrism.) RELICS PLACED BENEATH ALTAR Relics of the 17 th - century Canadian martyrs, Saint Jean de Brébeuf and companions (brought from the altar of the former Holy Family Church), of the recently- canonized Canadian Saint André BeseVe ( ), and of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary were deposited beneath the altar in the new Cathedral of the Holy Family by the bishop during the dedica0on May 13. Walls of building anointed Cathedral rector Fr. David Tumback (above) and Fr. Kevin McGee (le7) anointed the walls of the cathedral building during the celebra0on, along with Fr. Don Hamel and Fr. Ken Beck. [2]

A7er the ligh0ng of the altar candles, and the passing of the flame from the Easter candle to candles held by those assembled, the stained glass windows that circle the worship space were also blessed by Bolen. Designed by ar0st Sarah Hall, the interior window themes span the Chris0an story of crea0on, covenant, incarna0on, resur- rec0on and glory. The large solar stained glass feature on the spire of the building was also designed by Hall, who avended the build- ing dedica0on. During the Mass of Blessing, special guest Bob Hurd, an OCP ar0st and composer from San Jose, California (below right), joined the diocesan choir to lead the singing of his composi0on A Listening Heart, which he dedicated to the diocese of Saskatoon on the occasion of the cathedral dedica0on. HOMILY BY BISHOP BOLEN A7er poin0ng to some of the dimensions of the new building, and reflec0ng on the vastness and the in- tricacy of crea0on, Bishop Don Bolen focused on the dimensions of God s great love: the breadth and length and height and depth of that love as de- scribed in St. Paul s levers to the Ephesians. [3]

Scriptures chosen for the celebra0on also focused on beginnings: the new heaven and the new earth envisioned in the Book of Revela0on, and the account of the birth of Christ from the Gospel of Mat- thew, appropriate for a building named for the Holy Family. The infancy narra0ve from MaVhew holds within it the tension and the mystery of eternity coming into 0me, Bolen said In Jesus, God comes to us where we are comes to us as we are. The Incarna0on tells us that God is willing to go to any lengths to search for us, to show us what it is to be human, to reveal God s eternal designs for us, and to redeem us. In Revela0on, when God says behold, I make all things new, it is not only about the end of 0me, but also about God working within our lives and our world here and now, said Bolen. Life is filled with transi0ons, beginnings and endings, with new life experienced side- by- side with sorrow and loss as part of the human condi0on, he observed, reflec0ng on the recent death of Monsignor Michael Koch, a member of the cathedral building commivee. We are called to be transformed, in order to radiate the mystery of the life, death and resurrec0on of Jesus... - Bishop Don Bolen The beginning which comes with the dedica0on of this new cathedral has caused us to marvel and to wonder, he said, saying the celebra0on can be seen not only as the dedica0on of a building, but also as a dedica0on of a people. We are called to be transformed, in order to radiate the mystery of the life, death and resurrec0on of Jesus and of the sending of the Holy Spirit, he said. Bolen ended his homily praying that the cathedral would be a place of wonder, a place to li7 all that makes up our human condi0on into God s presence, and a place of healing and reconcilia0on. May it be a home of mercy and a house of hope. GiV families GiVs for the Eucharis0c celebra0on for the dedica0on of the Cathedral of the Holy Family were brought forward by families represen0ng the diversity of the diocese. [4]

At the conclusion of the celebra0on, Barry and Giselle Frank (lec), chairs of the diocesan Uni*ng in Faith campaign, which raised funds for the Cathedral and Catholic Pastoral Centre, expressed thanks to all the 98 parishes of the diocese, as well as to the many volunteers and donors for the support given to the project, acknowledging the vision and leadership of former bishop LeGaV, the guidance of present bishop Bolen, and the work of the building commivee under the leadership of chair Jim Nakoneshny and cathedral rector Rev. David Tumback. Tumback and Bolen also expressed apprecia0on to architects Obert Friggstad and Keith Henry and team, and to all those who worked on the building s construc0on and décor. Bolen thanked ecumenical representa0ves avending the Mass of Blessing and par0cipa0ng in a prayer service the night before. Bolen also expressed his apprecia0on to the community of St. Paul Co- Cathedral for many dec- ades of service to the diocese and gracious support during the transi0on to the new cathedral. Tumback concluded with words of apprecia0on for the years of leadership by Bolen and Le- GaV, and all the former bishops of the diocese. [5]

GALa OPENING WEEK May 6 to May 13, 2012 Eight days of celebration began with Mass at St. Paul May 6: Sacred Chrism sent forth to new cathedral By Kiply Lukan Yaworski The Gala Opening Week of events May 6 to 13 were held in the days leading up to the official Mass of Blessing to dedicate the new Cathedral of the Holy Family in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon. The week of celebra0on began with an open- ing Mass May 6 at St. Paul Co- Cathedral, acknowledging the historic contribu0on of that faith community as Saskatoon s first Catholic parish and as the diocesan cathedral from the 0me the diocese was formed in un0l this year. Bishop Donald Bolen presided at the celebra- 0on of the Eucharist, wearing vestments do- nated by St. Paul Co- Cathedral to the new Cathedral of the Holy Family as a gi7 to mark the transi0on. The celebra0on at St. Paul included a cere- mony sending forth the Sacred Chrism that would be used for the dedica0on of the new cathedral building and its altar on May 13 (see related ar*cle page 1). Blessed at this year s Chrism Mass, the Sacred Chrism was held in a vessel donated by Verna Chappell, and carried in an Ark of the Sacred Chrism designed, cra7ed and donated by Allan Zakreski of St. Anne parish in Saskatoon. The original plan was to walk with the sacred oil on the ark from St. Paul on Spadina Cres- cent to the Cathedral of the Holy Family on Nelson Road in northeast Saskatoon, but heavy rain prompted the cancella0on of the walking procession. [6]

Instead, a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Women s League honour guard accompanied the oil to a wai0ng vehicle, by which it was transported to the new cathedral. The Ark of the Sacred Chrism and a delega0on from the St. Paul celebra0on which included the bishop, Rev. Don Hamel, parish- ioners and representa0ves of other parishes form across the diocese were welcomed by cathedral rector Rev. David Tumback in a short ceremony. Immediately following the Sunday Eucharist May 6, a Family Carnival was held at the new cathedral, with several bouncy castles inflated in the church hall, a small- animal penng zoo (including a popular snake), games, ac0vi0es and snacks. Opening week ac,vi,es con, nued May 7 with an evening of quiet reflec,on and prayer to mu- sic, in a Whispers of God and Taizé prayer event at the Cathedral of the Holy Family, organ- ized by commivee members Karen Schreiner, Francine Audy and Cathy Swarbrick with the help of vol- unteers and a choir from St. Anne parish. A Cathedral on Tap event May 8 focused on the theme Build my church reminiscent of God s words to St. Francis of Assisi, which refer to building up more than a physical building. Saskatoon Theology on Tap organizers including Michael MacLean and Madeline Oliver of St. Thomas More Ministry Team; Laurie Friesen, youth coordinator for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon; and Colm Leyne of the diocesan Youth Ministry office coordinated the event, along with Marci Deutscher of the diocesan Founda0ons Theology Uncorked program. The evening featured presenta0ons and discussion ques0ons, served up with coffee or drinks. [7]

Speakers included GSCS teacher Leah Kouwenhoven; Rev. Andre Lalache, a Ukrainian Catholic priest who serves on the STM College ministry team; Harvey and Kathy Chatlain, the parents of Bishop Mur- ray Chatlain; Colm Leyne, with his wife Sharon par0cipa0ng via a video message; and Rev. David Tum- back, cathedral rector. The discussion focused on ways to become a welcoming, inclusive community, building connec0ons with youth, with families, and those at every stage of life, including those who are aging, the marginalized and the suffering. A Taste of the Diocese and choir fes,val May 9 was one of the most popular events of the week, with some 1,000 apending, to sample food from different ethnic tradi0ons, prepared by volunteers in parishes across the diocese. Music was also part of the evening, with several choirs par0cipa0ng, including singers from St. Scholas0ca, Burr; from St. Gabriel, Biggar; and from the Saskatoon city and the Saskatoon rural deaneries, as well as a Francophone and a Polish choir. [8]

Canadian award- winning glass ar,st Sarah Hall (right) was at the Cathedral of the Holy Family May 10 to provide a special a7ernoon tour and presenta0on about her techniques to a group of ar0sts and media. A documentary about her solar art glass designs was also shown during the event. Father David and Friends May 10 was an evening of song by several local musicians, that featured special guest Bob Hurd, a liturgical composer, who wrote and dedicated a song en0tled A Listening Heart for the dedica0on of the new cathedral in the diocese of Saskatoon. [9]

Other performers at Father David and Friends included the Trulicz Family Singers, Pam Pander, and Nancy Sparling, and a trio featuring Deacon Bob Williston, pastoral associate Garth Horn, and rector Fr. David Tumback performing selec0ons wriven by the Medical Mission Sisters immediately a7er Va0can II. A choral ensemble with Pander on piano and Cur0s Korchinski on organ, accompanied Hurd s por0on of the program. The annual Bishop s Dinner was also held as part of the Gala Opening Week May 11. Catholic Chris0an Outreach held its monthly Sum- mit evening at the new cathedral May 11, as part of opening week. The CCO Summit featured Eucharis0c adora0on, praise and worship music, scripture and a reflec0on by Fr. Marc Mireau. Priests were also avail- able to celebrate the sacrament of reconcilia0on. [10]

Finally, on the eve of the Mass of Blessing, some 400 gathered for an ecumenical prayer service May 12 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family. Clothed with Christ: An Ecumenical Celebra*on of Chris*an Discipleship was led by Bishop Don Bolen of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, Rev. Amanda Currie of St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, Rev. Claire Ewert Fisher of the Mennonite Central CommiVee of Saskatchewan and Pastor Harry Strauss of Forest Grove Community Church. Scripture was proclaimed by Bishop Cynthia Halmarson of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Saskatchewan Synod; and by Rev. Ron McConnell of the United Church of Canada, Riverbend Presbytery. Music ministry was provided by the Worship Team from Forest Grove Community Church, led by Pastor Jay Dyrland and Pastor Dale Dirk- sen, and by the 6:30 p.m. Cathedral of the Holy Family Choir led by Jackie Ackerman, Ken Neitz and Cur0s Korchinski. Rev. Amanda Currie preached the reflec0on for the evening, no0ng the importance of gathering with fellow Chris0ans because we can and reflec0ng on the profound meaning of covenant, in which God s faithful love is poured out regardless of our response. Love that heals, love that serves, love that forgives, love that never gives up is the char- acteris0c of covenant, she said, recalling key moments in her own life when she experienced this reality. The celebra0on con0nued with prayers of commitment based on a Methodist Covenant service, and a ritual ac0on in remembrance of bap0sm, where those assembled came forward and touched water from the bap0smal font, held in basins by the four presiders from different Chris0an tradi0ons. [11]

Throughout the week, the diocesan CWL commivee Our Lady of Grace and the Knights of Columbus provided hospitality and refreshments at various events, and tours were provided by volunteers. Two books were produced in conjunc0on with the opening: A Beacon of Welcome wriven by Ned Powers and designed by Shawna Kunz to highlight the building; and Transfiguring Prairie Skies wriven by Bishop Donald Bolen and glass ar0st Sarah Hall, featuring theological reflec0ons and back- ground informa0on about the stained glass art work at the new cathedral.
