As Chronicles reminds us, we prefer sinfulness over goodness time and time again. Infidelity, abomination, pollution, mocking prophets we do it all. And, still God loves us. The psalm offers a beautiful image of the price we pay for living in the darkness of sin and evil when we know the beauty of living in the light. Alone, isolated, still we remember the beauty of life with God and we weep. God is rich in mercy. Time and time again, God brings us back to life. Jesus life was sacrificed to save ours. We are saved not by our works but by the gift of God. What more powerful words are there than those found in John: For God so loved the world the he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Lenten Reflection In Lent, we are being asked to consider where we have not yet surrendered our lives to God, not so much by way of great, romantic gestures, but rather in concrete and practical ways. For example: Do I seek to make my family s everyday life happier rather than putting my own desires first? Can I make do without some material goods, so that I can share with others who lack even the basics? Can I stop dwelling on past hurts, so that I can give generously here and now? Do I listen when I want to speak and make room for others voices and dissenting opinions? Am I willing to let teenage or adult children, friends, or my spouse grow in new directions, even when that means certain kinds of losses for myself? Am I able to let go of any desire that exists to prop up my own sense of self, and trust that there is a deeper self beneath whose joy lies in self-gift? 4. Kids should know that adults should never ask them to keep secrets from their parents, and if an adult does ask them to keep secrets, to talk to their parents immediately. Lenten Fish Fry Dinner Knights of Columbus Council 5300 is sponsoring Lenten Fish Fry dinners each Friday evening during Lent beginning February 16th. (No fish fry on Good Friday). Come to St. Raphael Parish Hall in Goleta to enjoy one of the tastiest fish dinners you can get in Southern California. Cost is only $10. Children under 12 are $5. Take-out meals are available. Serving begins at 6:00 pm. Proceeds support the charitable works of the Council. Come Join Our Parish Choir! Our next Choir rehearsal will be on in the Church Choir Loft. The Choir provides music for our regular 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. We also rehearse on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. before the Mass. There are no auditions you just need to have a desire to sing praises to the Lord! If you have ever sung in the shower and/ or tub you are qualified! We are especially in need of male voices but all are welcome! We have a wonderful group of dedicated members who will welcome you and help you to fit right in!
