The two-week time Fortnight, which began on June 21, is designed to place focus on religious liberty and religious freedom. The theme this year Freedom for Mission - calls on us to follow Christ as missionary disciples by seeking the truth, serving others, and living our faith in all that we do. Fortnight for Freedom promotes prayer, education and public action. It occurs annually at a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power, including St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Fortnight for Freedom is designed to promote the importance of preserving the essential right of religious freedom, for now and the future, for Catholics and for those of all faiths. On the Fortnight website , the U.S. Bishops has a multitude of resources. A few new items this year are: Pray-Reflect-Act - A series of short, daily reflections on different aspects of freedom and Christian mission. How to Talk about Religious Liberty - In our polarized country, Christians can make a significant contribution by speaking with confidence and respect about issues that are important to us. This short, practical guide aims to help Christians talk about the topic of religious freedom. Some of the other resources are prayers; a series of examples of current threats to religious liberty in the U.S; high school lesson plans; a 14-day study guide on Dignitatis humanae; Freedom to.fact Sheets; videos and more. For more information, visit 5

6 Special Liturgies Bookend Fortnight for Freedom Traditionally there are two televised national liturgies that bookend the national celebration of Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Mission. The Closing Mass and some of the Convocation events are expected to air on EWTN but at press time, there were no were official details available. When released by the USCCB, the Diocese of Palm Beach will place any additional information our diocesan website and web Events Calendar. Please keep checking or you can visit On June 21 there was a Fortnight Opening Mass celebrated by Archbishop Lori at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore Maryland. 10 **Please note: Below is TEXT ONLY from the PDF of this item that is in the PDF related flier announcement file.** Tips for Parents: Going Out Checklist Kids Staying Home Alone Heading out for some family fun at an amusement park, movie theater, mall or any other public place? Use this checklist to make your outing safer. REVIEW THE KIDSMARTZ RULES Make sure your children understand the basic rules of safety check first before going anywhere; take a friend everywhere you go; tell people NO if they try to touch or hurt you; and tell a trusted adult if anyone makes you feel sad, scared or confused. PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES Look at a map of the facilities and locate information booths or customer service centers. Carry recent pictures of your children in case they get lost. You can even take a picture of them on your cellphone just before leaving. CHARGE YOUR CELLPHONE Check that your cellphone is charged and your children have the number memorized. Consider giving older children a cellphone of their own so you can reach them more easily. PAY ATTENTION TO CLOTHING Remember what your children are wearing so you can describe their clothing to staff members in case they are lost. Tip: If your children are wearing bright colors, they will be easier to spot in crowds. IDENTIFY ADULTS WHO CAN HELP Teach younger children to look for people like security officers, store employees or park staff members who can help them look for you in case you are separated. CHOOSE A MEETING SPOT Instruct older children to go directly to a designated spot, like a store or an information booth, to meet you. They should never leave or go to the parking lot to try and find you. PLAN FOR BATHROOM BREAKS You should always go with younger children to the restroom. Make sure older children take a friend; it s safer than going alone. Find more helpful tips and resources at KidSmartz.org 10

11 **Please note: Below is TEXT ONLY from the PDF of this item that is in the PDF related flier announcement file.** Kids Staying Home Alone With everything parents have to juggle these days, the time may come when families have to leave a child home alone. There are a number of important things to consider before allowing your child to stay home without you. You should Assess your child. Make sure he or she is mature enough to handle this responsibility. Ask your child how he or she feels about being alone. Define rules and expectations to help ensure your child maintains a daily routine while home alone. Keep a list of numbers close to the telephone including those for you, other trusted adults, 911 and other emergency services. Create practice situations and be sure your child understands what to do in specific emergencies such as a fire or loss of electricity. Make sure your child knows His or her full name, address and telephone number along with your full name and how to reach you. He or she should never open the door for someone unless that person is on a preapproved list of trusted adults you have provided. Also make sure your child knows how to Contact 911 in case of an emergency. Carry his or her key so it is hidden and secure. Lock the door after entering and make sure the home is secure. Tell callers you re unavailable instead of saying he or she is home alone. Check with you immediately upon returning home to let you know he or she has safely arrived. Bishop is asking all parishes and schools in the diocese to join him a united prayer effort in thanksgiving for the past several calm hurricane seasons and for our protection from devastating storms in the 2017 season. Below is a prayer to avert storms that you and your families can use throughout the hurricane season. Thank you for your support of our prayer effort to ask God to keep us safe from hurricanes in this upcoming season. (SUGGESTED PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS) God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us. ******************************************************** Oración para pedir protección contra las tormentas Dios Padre nuestro, Creador del Universo y Señor de toda la creación, humildemente nos presentamos a ti, como hijos tuyos, en acción de gracias por tu amoroso cuidado y protección. Guided by this truth, Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach accepts the remains of those who have no family or friends to bury them the loveless, the homeless, and the abandoned stillborns who possess inherent dignity because they are made in the image of God. Please consider volunteering to attend these charitable services which occur periodically throughout the year. If you would like to be added to our charitable committal service notification list, please contact Christina: christina@ourqueen.org Learn More About Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery As Catholics, We Respect Life From Conception Until Natural Death, However.not all Catholics are aware of: The respect that must be given to the human body after death Why this respect is due And how we show this respect The Catholic Church s teaching in this area is in logical agreement with the Church s teaching on life issues. Learn more about this teaching by contacting Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery and arranging for a representative to speak to your parish or ministry, either at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery or at a location you prefer. Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery Month s Mind Requiem Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery On the second Saturday of each month Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery celebrates the Month s Mind Requiem Mass. The tradition of the Month s Mind Requiem dates back to the fifteenth century as a feast of prayerful remembrance for departed souls on or about the thirtieth day of their passing. Though it is still common in Ireland and England, few parishes in the United States continue the custom today. Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery is located exactly 1-mile west of State Road 7 (US-441) and 3- miles west of the Florida Turnpike at Southern Boulevard, in Royal Palm Beach.
