XXXVI, NO. 9/10 A TEACHING ON ORDAINED CLERGY The Holy Spirit preserves the continuity of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We call this Apostolic Succession. In other words, when a Canonical, Orthodox bishop ordains a priest or a deacon, the bishop s authority to ordain, in and through the Holy Spirit, can been traced back to the Apostles ordained ministry and authority, which was given to them by our Lord Jesus Christ. Through ordination, men who have been chosen from within the Church are set apart by the Church for special service to the Church. Each is called by God through His people to stand amid the community, as pastor and teacher, and as the representative of the parish before the Altar. Each is also a living icon of Christ among His people. According to Orthodox teaching, the process of ordination begins with the local congregation; but the bishop alone, who acts in the name of the universal Church, can complete the action. He does so with the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the laying of his hands upon the person being ordained. Following the custom of the Apostolic Church, there are three major orders, each of which requires a special ordination. These are Bishop, who is viewed as a successor of the Apostles, Priest and Deacon, who act in the name of the Bishop. The priest, specifically, acts as the local representative of the bishop. Each order is distinguished by its pastoral responsibilities. Only a Bishop may ordain. Often, other titles and offices are associated with the three orders. The Orthodox Church permits men to marry before they are ordained. Since the sixth century, Bishops have been chosen from the celibate clergy. 3 A Big THANK YOU for a Beautiful Weekend This letter of thanks is directed to all those involved in the planning, prepping, serving, coordinating, post-break down and clean up, and prayerful participation in my ordination weekend (August 5 th and 6 th ). From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU so much for all your assistance, love and support! Presbytera Adrienne, our three sons and I had such a blessed weekend, and it wouldn t have gone so wonderfully, if not for you-all s prayerful dedication and hard work. May our Lord richly shine down His Grace upon this parish, and upon all the Orthodox Churches in Orange County. With sincere gratitude, Father Constantine, Presbystera Adrienne, and the boys: Peter, Isaac and Theodore YOUTH ANNOUNCEMENTS First Friday is Coming to St. John the Baptist First Friday is a casual event for families with children ages It begins with a potluck (the main entrée being covered by the church) at 6pm, and is followed by three centers: a fun, interactive bible lesson with Fr. Constantine, an exciting craft reinforcing the lesson, and then a chance to get some wiggles out! That s right, a full-body activity with LOTS of motion and creativity! Have you ever wished there was a low-key, social, family night to go to that the whole family would enjoy? Well, here it is! Parents will enjoy socializing as much as their kids! Our FIRST event will be on Friday, October 6 th, from 6-8pm, in the parish small hall. If you have any questions, creative ideas for fun art activities, or want to commit to bringing food, please contact Father Constantine. Jr. & Sr. GOYA Fireside Chats are Beginning! Beginning in October, every 2 nd Friday evening will be dedicated to a High School GOYA Meeting. We ll meet at a parishioner home, have a good meal, and talk about the faith! The goal will be to eventually create a loving and safe environment, where high schoolers can talk about their personal experience of being Orthodox, and how that plays out in their own lives. We ll discuss hot, controversial topics, as well as what we do as Orthodox Christians and why. If you would like to volunteer your home to meet in, want to help with food, or have other questions or ideas, please contact Fr. Constantine. I can t wait to see you there! OCF Beginning at Chapman! Fr. Constantine will be working with Chapman University students to begin an Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) on campus. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Fr. Constantine. Young Adults Group Starting at St. John the Baptist We are forming a Young Adults group at St. Johns! This meeting group encompasses ages 18-35, married or unmarried, who want to discuss, study and grow deeper in our Orthodox Faith, and how we connect with the world around us. 11 Message from the President Fr. John, Fr. Constantine Trumpower, members of the Parish Council and fellow Parishioners, I hope that you had a very exciting and pleasant summer, because our Church has had a VERY BUSY and exciting summer. The highlights are: The Ordination of Mr. Constantine Trumpower to Diaconate and Priesthood. Our newly ordained assistant priest Fr. Constantine is fully on board working hard in his newly constructed office. Congratulations to you Fr. Constantine and Presbytera Adrienne and the three energetic boys! The ordination was a moving experience. Congratulations to all who worked hard to organize the weekend events. The outside of the Church was painted, but unfortunately we had to spend some additional money to replace the facial boards due to termite damage. Notice the rails painted black and they look great. The storage garages were painted and you will see a new gate by the trash area. Please ask any of our Parish Council members or myself for more details on all of our projects. I cannot cover them all in this letter. On a sad note, one of our instrumental parishioners and Archon, John Haretakis passed away over the summer. He was the Chairman of the Building committee at Saint John s leading the construction of our sanctuary and our Community Hall our condolences to his family. We will always remember his endless efforts and contributions to this community. All these great joyous events as well as the unavoidable sad ones, force us to think about life, family, friends, Church community and many other things. Reflecting across all these, I have come to appreciate and respect this great community. We are not perfect, but we are great! As we move forward to a new School year and the many projects on our plate, I would like to share with you a couple of quotes which we all need to reflect upon, appreciate and hopefully practice. From Theodore Roosevelt: It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat. From Charles Schwab: I have yet to find the man, however exalted his station, who did not do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than under a spirit of criticism. We are looking forward to great New School Year for all of our Ministries especially the youth ministries under the direction of Fr. John and our assistant priest Fr. Constantine!
