John Henderson Tel & Fax: ; johnandcara@hotmail.com Technical Assistant : Cara Henderson Please submit Copy by 2nd Monday next month NEWSLETTER 40 Pence Part of the United Benefice of Kempsey with Severn Stoke and Croome d Abitot Churchwardens Announcement The Churchwardens of the Benefice of Kempsey and Severn Stoke with Croome d Abitot are delighted to announce the appointment of the Reverend Mark Badger, as the new incumbent. Mark was chosen unanimously after a rigorous selection process by the Patrons representative for this appointment, the Croome Estate Trustees and elected Parish Representatives of the Parochial Church Councils of both Kempsey and Severn Stoke with Croome d Abitot. Mark has a great deal of experience as a Parish priest. His last post was full time chaplain to Thames Valley Police and prior to that he was Priest in Charge of St George s in Worcester. For the last five years, he has been Managing Director of Motov8, a registered charity working with hard to reach young people in an effort to promote re-engagement with education and reduce social exclusion. The charity was established by Mark in 2001 and grew out of a Parish youth group he had started whilst at St. George s. It now has centres across Worcestershire and Herefordshire and works with some 250 young people per week delivering vocational training programmes. After seeing the charity through a critical point in its development and securing its future, Mark wanted to move back into full time Ministry. Mark is married to Kathryn (Kate) who is a Paediatric Occupational Therapist. They have four children, Thomas (17) who is currently studying for his A levels at Worcester Sixth Form College, Dominic (15) studying for his GCSE s at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Thea (2) and the new addition Ellie (3 weeks). The last member of the family is Bo the bouncy black Flat Coated Retriever! Mark s formal Induction at a special service in St Mary s Church, Kempsey will take place on a date yet to be arranged, but certainly within the next three months, as planned. We are looking forward to him meeting as many of you as possible as he takes up work in our Parishes to further build on Peter Holzapfel s galvanizing Ministry. Mark will continue to be ably supported by the Lay Team and Reverend David Hassell, who have been such an inspiration to us with their limitless generosity of time and effort during the Vacancy. The Diocesan Secretary, Robert Higham explains the reason for the brief delay in making this announcement - Making this appointment has given cause for review of the suitability of the present Rectory which was already known to need changes to the accommodation. The Diocesan Parsonages Board has now decided that a replacement would be a better way forward and this is in progress. The Bishop has agreed in these circumstances that he will grant a licence to the new Incumbent to reside outside the benefice as he can conveniently travel on a temporary basis until a new Rectory is purchased. We wish Mark and his family every happiness and fulfillment in his Ministry amongst us, which we await with eager anticipation. Duncan Smith - Churchwarden St Mary s, Kempsey Jim Spence and John Henderson - Churchwardens, St Denys, Severn Stoke.

3 PAGE 3 SEVERN STOKE AND CROOME D ABITOT NEWSLETTER / 2012 HAPPENINGS in SEVERN STOKE and environs continued St Denys Church Bells The Bells in the Tower were declared unsafe to ring properly, over forty years ago. On Sunday 3rd June, we heard the peel of the five St Denys Bells before the evening service. What wonderful timing for them to ring out for the Queen s Jubilee! This has been made possible by Mark Reagan of the Cathedral Bell Ringers and John Slater and the team, who have been working on the frame and mechanism to make it safe. We thank them for all their hard work and expertise and for the generosity of the Cathedral in giving us replacement Bell Ropes. In 1552, there was a record of four bells and a Sanctus Bell in the tower. The present five Bells along with the Sanctus have replaced the originals; the oldest one is inscribed with the following words, BE YT: KNOWNE TO ALL THAT DOTH ME SEE THAT NEWCOMBE OF LEICESTER MADE MEE, There are two bells dated 1648, one of which weighs one ton and is inscribed, ALL MEN THAT HEARE MY MORNEFVLL SOVND REPENT BEFORE YOV LI IN GROVND. Just imagine, these bells were hung here at the height of the Civil War between the Royalists and Roundheads, just a year before King Charles I was executed. The other two bells are dated 1661, no doubt to celebrate the Restoration of King Charles II and 1900, when all the Bells were re-hung by Henry Bond & Sons of Burford, Oxfordshire. The present electric Church Clock by Smiths of Derby dates from 1945 and uses the tenor bell to sound the hours and half hours. With grateful acknowledgement to Christopher Pickford for the historical notes.
