2 The Holy Apostles Peter And Paul, June 29th Veneration of the two great Apostles, Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is built. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God s providential guidance that they were led to make of the capital of the Roman Empire the center of the Christian world sanctified by their martyrdom, from whence would radiate the preaching of the Gospel. On June 29, 67 A.D. St. Peter was crucified, head downward, in order, he said, that the servant not be in the position once taken by the Master. On the same day, St. Paul was beheaded outside one of the gates of Rome. There were two Masses in Rome, one at St. Peter s at the Vatican Basilica that is erected over the burial place of St. Peter; the other at the Ostian Basilica, St. Paul s Outside-the-Walls, the tomb honoring the Apostle of the Gentiles. Down the centuries Christians have gone on pilgrimage to the tombs of these Apostles. It is certain that the chair of St. Peter and the chains of St. Paul were carefully guarded and preserved. The two founders can never be divided, and are mentioned united in a single prayer in the Collect in the day s Mass. The propers chanted at the rest of the Mass relate only to Peter. The next day, June 30, is assigned as the special feast of St. Paul and recalls the special mission of Paul as the Apostle of the Gentiles. During Holy Mass there is a commemoration of St. Peter. This came about by order of St. Gregory the Great. The distance between the Vatican basilica and the Ostian Way where the two Masses were celebrated proved to be difficult to traverse for all the pilgrims, so the great Pope put off until the next day the Mass at St. Paul s. As Peter still lives and governs through his successors, so does Paul continue to preach the Gospel every day throughout the world by means of his writings which the Church reads almost invariably at Holy Mass. ORDINATIONS IN FLORENCE During the first week of July, the week of Ordinations in Florence, Italy, will bring many graces to the worldwide spiritual family of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. On July 7th, the Feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, eleven deacons will be ordained to the sacred priesthood by H.E. Raymond Cardinal Burke at our church, Sts. Michael and Cajetan in Florence. Among the ordinands is our own Abbe David Silvey. Like last year, we thank God for another large group of deacons who will be anointed priests of Jesus Christ. There will also be seven deacons and eight sub-deacons ordained. Please keep these young men in your prayers as well as all those seminarians who will receive minor orders. O Lord, send us holy priests!

5 BUILDING FUND UPDATE: Tuck-pointing on the bell towers and north side of the church is badly needed. In addition, the stone on the front of the church needs to be sealed. Please consider special gifts to the Building Fund to help out with these extra expenses. Thank you to all who have responded. The remaining debt for the restoration of Old St. Patrick Oratory is currently $579,341. At this time we are making combined principal/interest payments of around $9,000 each month. If you would like to make a pledge, please fill out a pledge card and give it to Canon Gardner or place it in the offering basket. SAINT PATRICK, PRAY FOR US! ORATORY INCOME June 19-5th Sunday after Pentecost $ June 13 - June 19 - Building Fund $ Utilities $ Pledges received: $69, of $100,000 needed CELL PHONES Just a kindly reminder to put your cell phones on church mode (off or low vibrate) when you come into church. Please be aware that cell phones ringing during mass is very distracting not only to other faithful but to the priest as well. CANTATE DOMINO Sing to the Lord! The choir provides a perfect opportunity to express the praises of Almighty God. Our choir director, Mr. Michael De Voe, is looking for more singers who would like to join the choir. Practices are generally held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Mr. De Voe at devoeml@yahoo.com Wisdom from St. Francis de Sales: "Let us run to Mary, and, as her little children, cast ourselves into her arms with a perfect confidence." ~ St. Francis de Sales YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! Out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbor, we expect all faithful to appear in Church modestly dressed. With the exception of young boys, shorts for both men and women do not meet the norm of Christian modesty and are not to be worn for mass. Women and girls should not wear sleeveless blouses, low-cut dresses, sweat pants or tight fitting pants. Men are very much encouraged to wear collared dress shirts and dress slacks. In keeping with the perennial custom of the Church, women and girls are highly recommended to cover their heads for mass. Your cooperation is evidence of your love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and respect for the House of God. Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much. - Our Lady of Fatima,

6 JULY IS THE MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST You were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver... but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted and undefiled (1 Pet. 1:18-19). When Cain and Able made their sacrificial offerings, Abel s pleased God, but Cain s did not. This gave rise to the sin of hatred, and fratricide was the result. The Earth soaked up Abel s blood as his murder shouted to heaven for vengeance. This shouting prefigured the scene on Calvary, where Christ s Blood cried to heaven for the redemption of mankind. Millennia passes, and Israel becomes oppressed by Egypt. God commanded the people to kill a lamb and to sprinkle the doorposts with its blood; houses thus besprinkled were spared by the messenger of death. This blood on the doorposts was also a type of the Blood of Christ. Can the blood of a lamb save a man? No, but as a figure of the Redeemer s Blood it certainly could. In the New Testament there are specific examples of blood-shedding by Christ. First through His circumcision, His agony in the Garden, the scourging, crowning with thorns, carrying of the cross, crucifixion, and the piercing of His side with a lance. These instances show the close relation of the Sacred Passion to the Precious Blood. This is why it is regarded as being synonymous with Jesus Passion and Death, the source of our redemption. The Precious Blood is therefore a part of the Sacred Humanity and hypostatically united to the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Devotion to the Precious Blood is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers of the Church say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it. Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that It was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world., prayed Pope Clement I in 96 A.D. From this we see that devotion to the Precious Blood is a serious spiritual obligation and should bring us to the realization and sensitivity as to the awfulness of sin. Sin would have to be a terrible thing if it cost the Son of the Living God in human form, Jesus Christ, every last drop of his blood. No! the chastisements of God are not yet at an end; still more sorrowful times are ahead; and divine justice will be placated by the devotion to the Blood of Jesus Christ, said St. Gaspar del Bufalo, the world s greatest apostle of devotion to the Most Precious Blood. 4
