3 Page 2 AUGUST 16, 2015 From deacon Roy s desk Dear sisters and brothers in Christ: I want to share with you this note from Fr. Bryan. It will help us all better understand the ongoing working relationship that he and I have as your pastoral servants in the parish: Fr. Bryan s various roles in the Archdiocese of Seattle: I am the parish priest for St. Benedict with primary responsibilities of offering the sacraments, preaching, teaching, pastoral counseling and support for the parish and school community. Along with these duties I also have various other roles in the Archdiocese of Seattle as well. I am starting my fifth year as the Director of Vocations. This means I both promote vocations (meeting with candidates, putting on retreats, running discernment nights and Benedict House as a place of prayer and discernment, application process for seminary, etc.) and I am in charge of seminarian formation (frequent visits to seminary, pastoring the seminarians as a mentor, evaluations, summer placements, retreats, seminarians staying with me at Benedict House during the summer and school breaks, etc.). This ministry is based out of the chancery downtown where I usually go Mondays and Wednesdays. However, I also carry this ministry out throughout the Archdiocese at parishes, University campuses, young adult ministry, Catholic High Schools, radio, web, and at the seminaries (Spokane, Salem, Chicago, and Rome). I am also starting my fifth year as the chaplain at Kennedy Catholic High School. In general I go one day a week (Thursday s) to the school and celebrate masses, hear confessions, work with campus ministry team, visit religion classes, sit on advisory boards, offer counseling, attend sporting and arts offerings, fundraiser events, recruiting events, etc. Does this all sound like too much? I don t find it to be so. It all depends on one s personal energy as well as scheduling! I am committed to being present to the community at St. Benedict through regular mass, preaching, sacramental offerings, pastoral counseling opportunities, teaching sacramental preparation, visiting the school kids/teachers, etc. I hope to be at the parish on Fridays in general as well as for times in the morning and evenings throughout the week as needed for other meetings and or mass. Right now I am still settling in and getting schedules and other items in order. I am very happy to be at St. Benedict and look forward to growing in faith with you here for years to come. I am committed to you along with my commitments to other ministries in the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Archbishop told me that he plans for me to stay in the role of Director of Vocations years. I hope to be at St. Benedict for the rest of this time (another 6-8 years) FYI! I only want to add to Fr. Bryan s explanation that we are going to work together very well. I am still the pastoral coordinator, with the canonical authority and responsibilities of a pastor, but I will rely on Fr. Bryan s experience and knowledge heavily as our working relationship develops. We are very blessed to have him in our midst. Welcome, Fr. Bryan! Blessings to you all. Your servant in Christ, Deacon Roy Harrington, Pastoral Coordinator Worship and spiritual life DAILY MASS PROPOSED TIME CHANGE After consultation with many who attend daily mass Fr. Bryan and Deacon Roy propose the following new Daily Mass/Communion Service schedule to begin Tuesday September 1st: Monday: 7:45 AM Mass Tuesday: 7:45 AM Communion Service Wednesday: 6:30 PM Mass Thursday: 8:45 AM Mass (school attends) Friday: 7:45 AM Mass First Saturday: 9 AM Mass with anointing Please let Deacon Roy know (dn.roy@stbens.net) if you have any comments or concerns. We would like to start this new schedule beginning with an 8 AM Mass on August 31 st to honor and welcome back our school staff as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Our Thursday Mass is attended by the school all but the first Thursday of the month. ST. PIUS X Known as the pope of the Eucharist, Pius X is remembered for promoting frequent reception of the Eucharist. He did this when Jansenism, a heresy that believed Holy communion should be reserved for only a select few, was prevalent. Stating that Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to heaven, Pius X issued a decree to combat Jansenism, allowing children to receive Holy Communion when they reached the abe fo reason (age seven), rather that waiting until they were older. Pius X s other accomplishments include reforming the liturgy, encouraging priest to give simple Homilies, reintroducing Gregorian chant into services, revising the Roman Breviary, and developing a new catechism. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 278) POPE FRANCIS & THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES PILGRIMAGE Archbishop Peter Sartain invites you to join the Archdiocesan pilgrimage to the World Meeting of families in Philadelphia, Sept. 22 nd through 27 th. This is a historic opportunity to see Pope Francis on his first visit to the United States. The week-long Congress also offers inspiring keynote speakers and dozens of timely workshops. For complete information on how to register for this exciting pilgrimage, visit

4 Page 3 AUGUST 16, 2015 Worship and spiritual life ST. JOHN EUDES ( ) As a successful preacher in France, cared for plague victims on both a physical and spiritual level. In light of the Protestant Reformation, he felt that the academic and spiritual training of priests needed to be strengthened; therefore, he established a society of diocesan priests, the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, commonly called the Eudists. Their sole purpose was directed toward the foundation of new seminaries where future priests would be equipped with the necessary tools to respond pastorally to the turbulent times. He eventually established a religious community of women, the congregation of Our lady of Charity of the Refuge, dedicated to the rehabilitation of prostitutes. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 278) LOOKING FOR A SENSE OF PURPOSE? Are you being called to share the gospel of joy more intentionally? Are you ready to be transformed spiritually? Cabrini Ministry Training provides valuable skills needed to share Christ s love with those in need, and it will change your life! CMT includes classes on active listening, prayer, understanding feelings, and specific types of pastoral ministry. It consists of weekly classes held at St. James Cathedral that run from October-March. For more information, contact carla@cabriniministry.org or call X3 ST. BERNARD ( ) Bernard joined the Cistercian abbey at Citeaux, known for its strict and austere way of life. Within a short time he was noticed for his leadership; hence, he was appointed abbot of a new monastery at Clairvaux. His monastic vision at Clairvaux led to the foundation of several monasteries throughout France, Britain and Ireland. In solitude he wrote numerous theological and spiritual classics, including his treatise On Loving God, eighty-six sermons on the Song of Songs, and major work On Consideration, reflection papal devotion to Mary, earning him the titles Our Lady s faithful chaplain and Mary s harper. Bernard was a prolific writer and had a great influence on the Church.(2015 Sourcebook pg. 278) Give Us This Day Give us this day our daily bread, Our God in heaven, and grant that we who are filled with good things from your open hand, may never close our hearts to the hungry, the homeless and the poor. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. stewardship New roofs are coming! Contracts are being signed for the September replacement of the Benedict House and Parish Center roofs. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Annual Catholic Appeal returning $11,000 to help pay for this project. The roof replacements cost $58,000 with funding from many sources: Parish Building Fund 18,414 Parish General Savings 13,301 Annual Appeal Rebate 11,000 Donation from School 10,000 Parish Maintenance Reserve 5,216 57,930 In paying for the roof, the parish building fund and the maintenance reserves will be fully depleted. We are covering the remaining costs with money from general savings and this is not ideal. We keep money is savings to cover years when Sunday collections are low and for unexpected emergencies. St. Benedict Church ended last fiscal year on June 30th, 2015 with a $28,000 deficit in Sunday collections. We will dip into our savings this year to cover our everyday operating expenses, in addition to the roofs. Please consider making a special donation towards the roof project. Envelopes can be found in the back of the Church for your gift or you can give online at st.bens.net. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Even though we are told that if we seek the Lord, we shall not want, in the second reading St. Paul reminds us that, thus blessed by the Lord, the good steward should give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are short on funds and ask a monthly donation of $5.00 from each registered church family to help us provide the dollars we need to continue this program. Working together can we make a difference. ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY A Thrift Store & Medical Clinic in the Same Building is unique. St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) and Neighborcare Health are jointly celebrating the Grand Openingof their new primary care clinic and newly remodeled thrift store facility at 137 th and Aurora Avenue North in Seattle. It may seem like an odd combination, but it s really not. Both organizations believe deeply in the dignity and respect we need to pay all humans and for helping individuals and families with health care and other social services. The St. Benedict Commission meets monthly to discuss their service and make plans to carry out the dream of its patron. Consider joining them in assisting the poor and the needy within our parish boundaries.
