3 June 3, 2018 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 3 partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always. While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, Take it; this is my body. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. - Mark 14:22-24 In our modern times, symbol can seem to have lost its value. The most recognizable signs are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don t do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don t deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God s providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. This is my blood of the covenant. At the time of the first Passover the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ s Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It s a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes throughout the centuries and until the end of time the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you Please welcome Rev. Msgr. MEN S EMMAUS RETREAT JULY Men, put aside the hustle and bustle of daily life and attend the men s Emmaus retreat the weekend of July The retreat is held at Rosaryville Spirit Life Center and retreat house in beautiful, peaceful Ponchatoula, Louisiana. The retreat is based on the scripture passage The appearance on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35) and is an uplifting experience that has a profound effect on men s lives. The retreat begins at 5:00 PM Friday and ends after the 5:30 PM Mass on Sunday. Round trip transportation is provided from St. Dominic Church. 6 June 3, 2018 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 6 The CYO will have its weekly Eucharistic Adoration hour next on Wednesday, June 6, at 7:00 PM, with prayer and praise and worship music, followed by a movie night. The CYO Summer 2018 calendar and June Newsletter are posted at The summer schedule kicks off on Sunday, June 10, with the CYO Monthly Mass at 5:30 PM followed by the meeting at 6:30 PM in the gym, where we will be welcoming our newest member that just completed 7 th grade, celebrating our senior graduates, and looking at a great summer calendar. All members are encouraged to attend. The next TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat, sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, will take place on June 23-25, at Rosaryville. TEC is a national Catholic retreat program for older adolescents and young adults that centers on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through an experience of Church community, prayer, and sacraments. You ll meet new people, grow in faith, and return changed for the better. Visit for more information and to register. COVERED IN PRAYER: PRAYER BLANKET MINISTRY Prayer Blankets relief to the suffering peace to the fearful At the Masses on the first weekend of each month, the celebrant blesses special blankets, which were made by volunteers and laid over the altar rail. Then at the end of all of the Masses, the congregation is invited to pray over the blankets as they leave the church. This is your first opportunity to help. Come up to the altar rail after Mass and say a special prayer for the ill who will receive the blankets. A blanket and a special prayer card will then be given to parishioners who request them. The blanket is for anyone in need of prayer. They do not have to be physically or mentally ill. Next opportunity: think about someone who is in need of prayer and request a Prayer Blanket! We are grateful that this ministry has been sustained by donations of time, talent, and materials. There are more opportunities. If you want to donate your time and talent to make blankets but don't have the material, we can provide that for you. If you have material but don't sew, we welcome your material donation.
