3 December 17, rd Sunday of Advent Page 3 God of peace make you perfectly holy. Indeed it is God who does the perfecting, not us by our own power. So let us approach the Lord this Advent season with a spirit of hopeful humility, trusting that God alone can make us worthy of welcoming his Son. John answered them, I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie. - John 1:26-27 There is one... coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie. Untying sandal straps was no prestigious job. In the days of John the Baptist, those straps would have been especially unpleasant to deal with. Besides the usual odors that accompany sockless leather footwear, there would have been the grime and dirt from the sandy roads and paths that swirled around the people who went everywhere on foot. Taking off someone s shoes upon their arrival was the task of the lowly servants. So when John says he s unworthy of doing this task for the one who is coming after me, he is putting himself in a very humble position. And rightly so. John realizes that the Christ the Anointed One, the Messiah is so far above him, so far above any of us, that we are truly unworthy of him. Indeed, the Son of God is not just the greatest of men; he is God-made-man and in his presence we most appropriately should bow in humble homage. Yet this God chose to stoop down to our human level and walk among us. He chose to get his sandals dirty. And still today he chooses to allow us to encounter him as a friend and companion. But as John reminds us by his example, this encounter with the Lord is not the result of our own merits or accomplishments. We are sinners who stand in need of Christ s help. But thanks be to God, he is always willing to extend this help to us. As St. Paul says in today s epistle, May the CHRISTMAS EVE VIGIL MASSES 4:00 PM (Children s Mass) 6:00 PM Midnight Mass CHRISTMAS DAY MASSES 8:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:15 PM and 5:30PM If you would like to donate to our CHRISTMAS FLOWERS, you will find a special envelope in your packet and in the vestibule. 8 December 17, rd Sunday of Advent Page 8 MERRY CHRISTMAS! (OR NOT REALLY?) Here we are approaching Christmas and then the New Year and this is often a time when out of control drinking and drug use seems to spike. Whether you are the one drinking and/or drugging or the affected family member or friend, come join us to hear about how to manage through the holidays. Our speaker for the Wednesday, December 20 meeting is Cindi Lanza, LCSW, LAC a Board Certified Social Worker and a Board Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. Our speaker will address how to attempt to have healthy interactions between the addict/alcoholic and family/friends. Come out and learn about this and what you can do if this problem is affecting your life or the lives of your loved ones. As usual, we will meet at 7:00 PM in the church office Siena Room. The SUBSTANCE ADDICTION MINISTRY (SAM) is a spiritually based support group for those suffering from or affected by someone else s alcoholism or other drug addiction. We meet on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month. For questions or for strict confidential help, please call Mic Hartenstein, Get Closer to the Lord ST DOMINIC PERPETUAL EUCHARIST ADORATION CHAPEL is seeking volunteers for this most rewarding Ministry. Committed adorers serve one hour in prayer and reflection each week in the Chapel with the exposed Blessed Sacrament. Coordinators manage 6 hour blocks and assist the adorers in finding substitutes when they are unable to keep their commitment a certain week. Please see contact information below. Our adoration chapel is one of the few perpetual adoration chapels in the archdiocese. We would like to keep this grace filled ministry alive. Many blessings and graces are poured in the community because of this ministry. But it is in danger of being reduced to part-time adoration. Please help us to fill the hours needed to keep this chapel in perpetual adoration. We have opportunities for Committed Adorers for these vacant hours: Fridays at 10PM Saturdays at 2PM, 9PM & 11PM Sundays at 7AM The Adorers for the following hours would like to share their commitment with a partner: Tuesdays at 8 AM, 10AM, 3PM Wednesdays at Noon & 1PM Thursdays at 5AM & 8AM Fridays at 10AM Sundays at 10AM Benediction every Friday at 7:00 PM For more information or to commit to one of the needs listed above, please chuckprieur@gmail.com or call (weekdays)/ (weekends).
