Saint John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter Sunday of Divine Mercy in response to Saint Faustina Kowalska s Divine Mercy devotion, which offered spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. At times how hard it seems to forgive! he acknowledges. And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The necessary condition for living joyfully? To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge. May Divine Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made mercy our life s ideal and a criterion for our faith s credibility: Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (Matthew 5:7). St. Dominic Savio He is the patron saint of our Parish. He is a saint at nearly fifteen years of age. He was educated by St. John Bosco at the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales. For St. Dominic Savio, holiness consists of always being cheerful and of doing one s ordinary duties, extraordinarily well. His Feast Day is on May 6. Domingo de la Divina Misericordia AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA El año pasado en este domingo, el Papa Francisco anunció este año como Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. San Juan Pablo II nombró al Segundo Domingo de Pascua Domingo de la Divina Misericordia en respuesta a la devoción de la Divina Misericordia de santa Faustina Kowalska que ofrece consuelo espiritual a los corazones en todo el mundo. Pero el Papa Francisco nos desafía a hacer que el consuelo que recibimos como don lo compartamos con alegría se nos llama a mostrar misericordia porque la misericordia primero se nos mostró a nosotros. La expresión más clara del amor misericordioso, dice el Papa Francisco, es perdonando a quienes nos ofende. Algunas veces parece difícil perdonar! él lo reconoce. TOM UZHUNNALIL (ANS Rome - 21 March 2016) It has come to our no ce that some unverifiable and unconfirmed reports have been circula ng these days especially in the electronic media on the present status and condi on of Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil, who has been abducted in Aden, Yemen, on 4th March by uniden fied gunmen. We, Salesians, are not responsible for the content or its authen city said Father Mathew Valarkot, spokesman for the Salesian Bangalore province to which the kidnapped priest belongs. In this context, we reiterate that ll date no further informa on has come to us from credible and authorita ve sources regarding the whereabouts or wellbeing of Fr. Tom. Therefore we earnestly appeal to all concerned to desist from forwarding all such unsolicited and misleading messages and spreading false rumors. In the mean me, let us con nue to pray for Fr. Tom so that the Lord may protect him from all harm and relieve him from the clutches of the evil forces sooner than later. In recent days, Fr. Valarkot had also said to the UCANews agency that "we must be pa ent with the system," poin ng out that an Indian Jesuit kidnapped by terrorists in Afghanistan was released a er nine months. Fr. Joseph Chinnaiyan, (CBCI) Deputy Secretary General of the Indian Catholic Bishops' Conference, meanwhile, has said that the Indian Church is in "constant contact" with the Indian government about the status of Fr. Uzhunnalil and that the Indian Foreign Ministry "has informed us that it has stepped up efforts to locate the priest." When the Protestant Reformation took hold, the fairly recent achievements of the Church in regard to the sacrament of marriage were reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil matter, although some said that the civil society had to be in harmony with Christian teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramentality of marriage. They identified many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that still govern our practice today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages must also be announced three weeks in advance to the community, and recorded in a register. In some places in the world, the banns are still posted in the public square. In the United States, parishes sometimes publish the banns in the bulletin. Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, If there is anyone here present who sees any reason why these two should not be married... This bit of drama has no place in the Catholic liturgy, but survives among Protestants who broke with us before Trent edited this cliffhanger out of our public prayer. Rev. James Field, Copyright J.
