2 From Fr. Mike THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE I cannot let any patriotic day in our country go by without thinking of Red Skelton s tribute to the Pledge of Allegiance. I thought I would share it with you this Memorial Day Weekend. From The Red Skelton Hour, CBS TV, January 14, COPYRIGHT 1969 RICHARD RED SKELTON 'I remember this one teacher. To me, he was the greatest teacher, a real sage of my time. He had such wisdom. We were all reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and he walked over. Mr. Lasswell was his name. He said; 'I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester, and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word: I: me, an individual, a committee of one. PLEDGE: dedicate all my worldly goods to give without self-pity. ALLEGIANCE: my love and devotion. TO THE FLAG: our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job. OF THE UNITED: that means that we have all come together. STATES: individual communities that have united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country. OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC: a state in which sovereign power is vested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION: meaning, so blessed by God. INDIVISIBLE: incapable of being divided. WITH LIBERTY: which is freedom and the right of power to live one's own life without threats or fear or some sort of retaliation. AND JUSTICE: the principle or quality of dealing fairly with others. FOR ALL: which means it's as much your country as it is mine. Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance : 'under God.' Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said, 'That is a prayer,' and that would be eliminated from schools, too?' Fr. Your support helps the CCC connect people to Christ, here and around the world, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. WAYS TO GET INVOLVED I am but an instrument, a tiny pencil in the hands of the Lord with which He writes what he likes. However imperfect we are, he writes beautifully. If interested in being a lector, Eucharistic minister, greeter, usher or altar server contact the parish office at Small Groups help adults grow in faith and fellowship. Prayer Blankets are given to those who are sick or hurting in any way. The blankets are a tangible sign that each person is covered in prayer by our community. If you are able to provide food for or serve at parish funeral dinners contact Jeanne Siebert at St. Theresa s is the parish women s organization that sponsors dinners, parish social events, receptions, funeral dinners and other events throughout the year. 5 Join us for coffee after Sunday Mass in the lower parish hall! There will be a Memorial Day Mass in the cemetery this Monday, May 29th at 9:00 am. Bring your own chair or pick one up from the parish hall when you come. If you need to meet or visit with Fr. Mike, he will now be available at the rectory every Monday beginning at noon and Tuesdays from noon to 5:00 pm. Holy Family will be hosting Family Promise on Monday, May 29th at the Eudora United Methodist Church, 2084 N. 1300th Road. We are in need of main dishes, sides, desserts and volunteers for evening and overnight hosts. Please sign up in the back of church or contact Lori Foos at Feeding Eudora is a non-profit organization that is providing lunches to anyone 18 and under. Picnic lunches are served at the Eudora Township Library every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon1pm beginning May 16 through August 10. Turn to Jesus with great trust and allow yourself to be loved by him." - Blessed Teresa The first Summer LifeNight will be this Wednesday, May 31st at 6:30 pm in the lower parish hall. All high schoolers are invited for a game night and brainstorming session for the upcoming year. There will be an NCYC meeting on Sunday, July 9th, after Mass in the upper parish hall. All students and chaperones should attend. If you cannot make it please contact Molly. The first Saturday monthly holy hour will take place next Saturday, June 3rd at 9:00 am in the old church following the first Saturday Mass. You are also welcome to come to the Old Church (call the parish office for the code) any time for additional adoration. We are a member of the Best Choice SAVE-ALABEL program. Best Choice products are at our local Gene s Heartland and other grocers. Please drop your labels in the box in the narthex and thank you for helping Holy Family! If you know of someone who is home bound and needs communion, please contact the office so we can make sure they are added to our list. Memorial Day Prayer Dear God, on this day we remember the sacrifices made for us by those who were willing to give their lives to ensure that our own would be spent in freedom. Let us never forget to pray, not only for the dead, but also for those still living and working in the cause of freedom around the world. As we celebrate and enjoy this time, give comfort and grace to those men and women who have sacrificed so much for our sake. St. Martin, St. George and St. Joan of Arc: pray for the protection of our soldiers in their efforts, and bring them home safely at the end of their duties wherever that home may be. Amen.
