3 The Messenger Page 3 NOVEMBER 2015 TIME & TALENT VOLUNTEER SURVEY Recently, St. Mark s households received volunteer surveys and a list of committee/volunteer Opportunities. Please return your completed form by 22 November. Extra copies of the survey are available from Teri Lura Bennett. Please contact Dan Wilkey, Woodland Pomeroy or Teri Lura Bennett for any questions, concerns, or if you require additional information. Thank you! Correction: In the October 2015 MESSENGER, the name of Brad Schelgel was inadvertently omitted from the list of volunteers who helped clean up the alley on God s Work. Our hand s Sunday. Apologies, Brad! KEEN-AGERS Wednesday, 18 November, 10 AM Program: Longwood Gardens, The First One Hundred Years. Longwood has become one of the world s great horticultural showplaces. Our program tells the story of Pierre DuPont s effort to save a collection of historic trees to the magnificent garden which has been created on a farm near Kennett Square, PA. The program will prove a good preparation for those planning to visit the gardens during the Christmas Season. CATHARINE WALKER a member of our Congregation, died on Saturday, 17 October. Her funeral was held at St. Mark s on Saturday, 24 October with burial in Meadow Ridge Cemetery on 26 October. Our sympathy is extended to her children Kathy, Michael, and Betsy. Catharine s family joined St. Mark s in the early 1940s and was quite active in the Sunday School for many years. She and her husband James later returned to St. Mark s. Our sympathy is expressed to Norman Hunt, his brother, and their families following the death of their mother, AMANDA VERONICA HUNT, on 7 October. Eternal rest grant to Catharine and Amanda, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday 25 November, 6:30PM The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in All Saints Chapel. We are expecting members of Lovely Lane United Methodist Church to share the evening with us. Please join us as we meet to give thanks for our many blessings. PLEASE REMEMBER We are grateful for the overwhelming number of photographs of deceased loved ones that have been brought in to mark our celebration of All Saints throughout the month of November. Photos may be left in the church until Sunday, 22 November. Thank you, once again.
4 The Messenger Page 4 NOVEMBER 2015 Silent Auction During the month of November, a silent auction will be set up in Lehr Hall. The proceeds of this event will benefit the work of the Parish Life Committee. Throughout the year we receive requests from various agencies for assistance. The money received from the auction will help us to fulfill some of these unbudgeted requests. Your support is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your participation. Annual Stewardship Luncheon on November 15th You are invited to join us for our annual Stewardship luncheon after worship on Sunday, November 15 th. We will have a special program, learn about St. Mark s benevolence and service ministries, and distribute envelopes and pledge cards for As always the day promises to be one of good food and fellowship. Hope to see you there! Christmas At Sea Last year, as part of the Baltimore International Seafarers Center s Christmas At Sea initiative, we assembled a dozen shoeboxes with gifts for seafarers docked at the Port of Baltimore. The program is supported by churches, community groups, and individuals in the Baltimore area. Last year more than one thousand boxes were distributed. This year we propose focusing on the boxes, instead of our usual hat and mitten tree, and increasing the number of boxes to 20. As noted in the list of desired items below, hats and scarves, this time for adults, are among the items suggested for the boxes. Of course, anyone wishing to bring in children s items are welcome to do so. Here are items appropriate for the shoeboxes, keeping in mind that the majority of recipients are male: small-sized toiletries (sealed; no unwrapped soap or toothbrushes); a warm hat; pens and pads; warm socks, gloves, or a scarf; playing cards; and Baltimore post cards. We need shoeboxes or plastic shoebox size boxes. In early December we will fill and wrap them for delivery the week of December 7 th. In the meantime, items from the list above will be collected in large marked boxes placed in the narthex and social hall on Sunday mornings. Thank you for your participation. Christmas at Sea is a valuable ministry in which many Lutheran churches in the Baltimore area participate. Rev. Gerry Rickel, a friend of St. Mark s who was our guest at last year s Stewardship luncheon, serves half-time through Seafarers International as a port chaplain in Baltimore. For more information contact Austin Lee or Paul Walker. Lord, when we are wrong, make us willing to change. And, when we are right, make us easy to live with. Amen.
