Ralph Welsh will tell the exciting story of William Miller Kemp, hero of the yellow fever epidemic of This charter member of St. Mark s is credited with saving Baltimore from the epidemic that plagued Norfolk, VA, and as a result of his outstanding work, became one of the founders of the National Quarantine and Sanitary Convention. This story should sound all too familiar to us today as the nation now struggles with efforts to contain the Zika virus. If you are planning to attend, please call the church office or us at admin@stmarksbaltimore.org, in order to help us plan for lunch. Thank you! Thank you to all who not only celebrated my retirement but who have also supported me in many ways throughout my 31 years as Pastor of what I believe is one of the finest congregations in the ELCA. My fervent hope is that guided by the Holy Spirit St. Mark s will continue to be a place of welcome, worship, and service done out of thanksgiving for God s love and mercy and God s desire for justice in what is an often hostile world. Since 1860 St. Mark s has been a spiritual home for many people, and I trust it will continue to be so for many years to come. Thank you again for all that has been done throughout the years and also on July 31st to make my farewell one filled with great memories and wonderful relationships. To the Members and Friends of St. Mark s from Pastor Dusman, It is with much gratitude that I thank you for the wonderful day of my retirement. I m still emotionally overcome by the large attendance at worship and the many expressions of congratulations and support on my years at St. Mark s. I deeply appreciate all that was done beginning with the liturgy and the outstanding luncheon that followed. St. Mark s has been my Church home for over 45 years. It has been a place where I have grown in faith and where I have been involved in ministry since 1976 when I was set apart as a deacon. So many persons and events have enriched my life, and I will always cherish these memories. Installation of Rev. William Gohl as Bishop of the Delaware-Maryland Synod, ELCA. The Installation of Pastor William Gohl as Bishop will take place in Frederick, MD, on Sunday,9 October, 4 PM, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 East Church Street. Persons wishing to attend may check with other members and perhaps carpool to Frederick. We wish Pastor Gohl and his family all good things and pray the Holy Spirit enlightens and encourages him as he sets about the task of leading our Synod. We look forward to welcoming Bishop Gohl and his family to St. Mark s whenever the opportunity is there to do so.

4 The Messenger Page 4 SEPTEMBER 2016 Notes from Council... Its fall and time for new beginnings! For St Mark s that means that our search for our new pastor begins in earnest. The Synod Guidelines inform us that the next step is to complete the Ministry Site Profile (MSP or the Profile). The Bishops office & Delaware Maryland Synod Guidelines recommend that this process take place from September through November of this year. A copy of the blank MSP has been posted on the Council bulletin board, and notices about this effort will be provided in our weekly bulletin. In September we will be assembling the Profile committee. Several of you have already expressed an interest in serving on this committee and we are grateful for your interest. Any & all persons who would like to be included on the Profile committee please contact Stephen or myself. The completed MSP will be used by the Bishops office & Synod to conduct an ELCA Synod wide search for a pastoral candidate for St Marks. The MSP is comprised of Five parts; Part 1: Who We Are (names/contact info, demographics, budget, community context) Part 2: Our Vision for Mission (leadership style, programs, theological perspective, purpose, mission, & references), Part 3: Leadership Needs (what kind of leader do we seek, prioritize ministry tasks, mutual expectations, compensation package, benefits, professional expenses), Part 4: Commentary. Part 5: (note our MSP document process, contact people & references). October and November will continue the process with everyone in the Congregation invited to participate in multiple open dialogue and brainstorming sessions to be sure that everyone has a chance to provide input into the final document. The committee will be responsible for completing the MSP document to present to the Council before sending it to the Bishops Office/Delaware MD Synod for review. Once all those reviews are completed the Profile is posted on the ELCA Synod website. Thank you to all as we diligently, and prayerfully work to discern the future for St Mark s in ministry at St Paul & 20 th street! Dot is no longer able to drive and would love some assistance getting to and from appointments and in going to see her husband, Herb, now in long-term rehab at Lorien Mays Chapel, in Timonium. Many thanks for your willingness to help out. Meanwhile, you may want to send a card to Dot at her home, and maybe one to Herb as well. On Sunday, 11 September, we will dedicate a set of red vestments, generously given by Bonnie and Bob, and Leslie and Brenda. This gift is made in loving memory of their parents, Melvin and Theoda Klotzman. We are deeply grateful for this gift.
