2 Lieutenant s Message It has been 2000 years since Christ came amongst us, and there is still a large part of the world who have not gotten His message. We Knights and Ladies must answer our call to mission: pray for peace, support our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and work for justice. Your continued prayers for PEACE IN JERUSALEM are needed now as much as ever and your material support is necessary to help educate, provide social services, and bring the words of Christ to those who live in the Holy Land. We all know the answers to the questions: Who is my neighbor? When did we see you hungry, in jail, naked or thirsty? Your prayers and support will help answer those questions that are as current today as there were when Christ told the parables 2000 years ago. The Lieutenants for the United States are working for justice in the Holy Land and have undertaken that mission by forming the Justice and Peace Commission. The commission s work includes keeping all our members informed of actions they can take to bring justice to our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land; keeping our government officials aware of the disparity of economic and security support provided by the United States and our concern for a lasting, secure and equitable peace for all those who call the Holy Land home. In early March, Sir Thomas McKiernan and I will be in Rome meeting with members of the Grand Magisterium. Tom has been asked to be a member the Schools Commission For The Holy Land. The eight member international commission will consult and advise local officials on the modernizing and upgrading the schools. On the other hand, I will be meeting with members of the Grand Magisterium to identify specific projects the North Central Lieutenancy will support. In the past our support has gone to the Latin Patriarch for his priests, sisters, brothers and lay associates; for the operation of the Order and for appropriate projects the Grand Magisterium has identified. We have asked for a list of those projects so we can directly support and be identified with a specific project in the Holy Land. Thank you for your prayers, support and suggestions. I have enjoyed being your Lieutenant and look forward to working for you and our sisters and brothers in the Holy Land. Mary Jo and I extend to each of your our best wishes for a blessed and happy Jubilee Year Sincerely, Thomas J. McCabe, KGCHS Lieutenant Cover Story: Chicago area members Patricia and Frank Covey recently found themselves unexpectedly on the trail of our Order s founder, Godefroy de Bouillon. Last summer, after Frank completed teaching Comparative Law at Loyola University s Rome Center, the Coveys left for a five-week stay in the Low Countries, starting in Brussels. On their first day there they were confronted by the equestrian statue of Godefroy, in the Palace Royale, bearing the designation King of Jerusalem, even though during his lifetime Godefroy refused this title on pious grounds.(1) Later they visited the quaint city of Bouillon, in southeastern Belgium and toured the remnant of Godefroy s 11th. Century castle now surrounded by castle additions made over the decade up to the 16th century. (2) The Coveys are pleased to report that the Order s flag still flies over this dwelling place of our founder.(3) A statue of the then-duke de Bouillon on his way to the Crusades graces the grounds of the castle.(4) When he left Bouillon for the Crusades, he left all his worldly possessions behind him. 3 Advocating Justice in the Holy Land Many of us have been to the Holy Land on pilgrimages. Pilgrims to the Holy Land are unable to avoid the signs of military occupation and the disparity between the living standards of the Jewish citizens and the Palestinians, both of whom who live in Israel and the Occupied Territories (East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza area.) When we first encounter these disturbing phenomena we are inclined to attribute them to Israeli security needs and greater industriousness. After all, we have heard all our lives what terrorists these Arabs are and they surely lack the Israeli work ethic. It is only when we begin to talk with our Christian church leadership in the country: Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox; clerical and lay; native and foreign, that we begin to see a reality which our American media have screened for fifty years. The creation of the State of Israel in 1948, with overwhelming American political support, was a godsend to the suffering Jews of Europe but a tragic injustice to the innocent Arab inhabitants of Palestine who played no part in the Holocaust or the periodic persecutions of European history. Little did we realize that comparatively few Jews resided in Palestine between the destruction of Jerusalem in 135 AD and the late 19th century. During those many centuries Palestinian Arabs tilled the soil, planted vineyards and olive groves, tended herds and populated hundreds of towns and villages, not to mention the Holy City of Jerusalem. The Zionist movement came into being in From the beginning, its leaders vowed to make Palestine into a homeland for the Jewish poor from Eastern Europe. The leaders knew Palestine was fully occupied by nearly a million Arabs, a mixed population of Muslims and Christians, but in the colonial mentality of European superiority, this was irrelevant. The natives were viewed as laborers or to be driven out. Needless to say, the Palestinians did not accept the forced partition of their country by the UN in 1947 (60% to the proposed Jewish State, 40% to the proposed Palestinian State). They lost the first war in 1948 and the decisive war in Their country has been occupied ever since. Most have become refugees in the process, while Israel has greatly prospered; now having one of the highest standards of living in the world. Despite all of the above, we must acknowledge that today s five million Israeli Jews did not call the shots in the destruction of the Palestinian homeland. Their ancestors did. More properly their ancestors Zionist leaders did. Most Jews who immigrated to Palestine before and after World War II were themselves fleeing from persecution in Europe or discrimination in North Africa and Middle Eastern countries. They were victims. They didn t know the reality of the fully developed Palestinian culture they were about to destroy. These eggs can t be unscrambled. History can t be undone. But there is always room for doing justice from this point forward. It is much like the consequences of slavery in our own country. We can t undo the injustices of the past, but we can try to right those wrongs for the future. As pilgrims, we want peace and wish the Arabs would all be peaceful and accept the dispossession of their land, but to quote the great Pope Paul VI, If you want peace, work for justice. In the next issue we will discuss doing justice to all factions in the Holy Land, including our beloved, long-suffering Christian Palestinian friends who have kept the faith through so many centuries of minority status. Shalom and Salem. This article was written by Judge James K. McCormick, Coordinator of the North Central Lieutenancy Peace and Justice Committee. WINTER

6 I N M E M O R I A M With respect and affection, we call the attention of our fellow Knights and Ladies to those members of the North Central Lieutenancy who have died recently. His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, and His Beatitude, Archbishop Michel Sabbah, will provide for Masses in accordance with the privileges of the Order. MOST REV. SIR ALFRED L. ABRAMOWICZ: Bishop Abramowicz was an auxiliary bishop of Chicago and beloved leader in the Polish American community. The Chicago native completed his seminary studies at Quigley and Mundelein seminaries and graduate studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. He served as national chairman for the 1969 U.S. visit of Cardinal Karol Wojtyla of Krakow and was instrumental in 1979 in planning his friend s second visit to the USA, this time as Pope John Paul II. He is best remembered for his 30 years as a bishop and pastor of Five Holy Martyrs Parish on Chicago s Southside where he listened to his people with a loving ear and guided their souls gently and lovingly. 20 Knights and Ladies served as an honor guard. Grand Prior, Francis Cardinal George, was principal celebrant. Cardinal Adam Maida presided in the sanctuary with 40 bishops and over 100 priests. Hymns were sung in Polish, Spanish and English. SIR RONALD E. CALLAHAN: Religion and education were high priorities for Sir Ronald who was a trustee of Benedictine University in Lisle. He also served on the parents council at St. Mary s College in South Bend and helped with the founding of St. Raphael s Church and St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville. He served in the Navy during WWII before earning a law degree at Loyola Law School. At his retirement, he was the Corporate Secretary for the Amoco Company. His associates described him as an absolute perfect gentleman. He is survived by eight children and 24 grandchildren. SIR ROBERT JOYCE: Sir Robert was retired chairman of the board of 7-UP bottling company. He was a veteran of WWII and a recipient of the Silver Star and the Bronze Star, high decorations for bravery and valor and twice the recipient of the Purple Heart. His philosophy was anything can be done and, following his philosophy, he did not hire anyone with previous bottling industry experience because he believed they came to him with too many convictions of what couldn t be done. He was also a Knight of Malta. Funeral Mass was held at Faith, Hope and Charity Parish in Winnetka. Chicago auxiliary bishop Edwin Conway presided in the sanctuary and officiated at the final commendation. SIR ARTHUR J. SULLIVAN: Advisor to four archbishops of Indianapolis, Sir Arthur served as president of the Indianapolis Board of Public Safety and senior partner in an Indianapolis law firm bearing his name. He was a trustee of St. Meinrad s Seminary and St. Augustine Home for the Aged. He attended the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University and the former Indianapolis University Law School. A veteran of World War II, he received the Jeanne Jugan Award for service to The Little Sisters of the Poor and Pope Paul VI named him a Knight of St. Gregory the Great. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Dillon Sullivan, 4 stepdaughters, two stepsons and five grandchildren. SIR JOSEPH TIERNEY: A man of old fashioned virtues, Sir Joseph worked long hours well into his 70s. Described as a straight-shooter both as a young FBI agent and later as an attorney and a CPA, he was described by peers as a perfectionist in all he did; someone who measured his words, wanted all the facts and was the best of what an attorney could be. He left a major mark on Milwaukee sports and charitable life both by what he did himself and facilitated others in doing. He served as a governor of the International Hockey League and board chairman of the St. Joseph and St. Michael Hospital; Milwaukee Athletic Club and Bluemound Country Club. His wife, Bernice, a son and three daughters survive him. The editor has learned that the City of Chicago has authorized the honorary designation of a portion of Columbia Avenue as Gladys J. Daniel Avenue additionally, a memorial bench and pathway will be installed on Columbia Beach. Lady Gladys died in 1998 (see THE PAGE, vol., No.2, 1998) WINTER
7 KNOW YOUR OFFICERS This is a new column to THE PAGE. In each edition I will feature members of the Grand Magisterium or our North Central Lieutenancy Council Members and Section Representatives. Lady Virginia Conrad Virginia could easily be called the godmother of our lieutenancy. Virginia and her late husband, Arthur, served for many years as co-chancellors of the Lieutenancy and in this capacity, their work was often unseen, but their organizational skills, prudent advice and hard work was eagerly welcomed by Lieutenants Adrian, Madigan, Lamb and McCabe. In the mid 70s, approval of nominations to the Order experienced a lengthy moratorium in the Midwest, especially in Illinois and Chicagoland. In 1985 a new Lieutenancy was created for this part of the country and Cardinal Bernardin was approached by Grand Master Cardinal Maximilian defurstenberg to accept the position of Grand Prior. The Cardinal declined because of the many other demands placed on his schedule. L-R Sir Arthur, Cardinal Bernardin and Lady Virginia Art and Virginia had a charming way of prevailing and after a visit with Cardinal Bernardin, His Eminence accepted the position and the three of them revived the Order in the Midwest. Today, largely because of Virginia and Art Conrad, the North Central Lieutenancy is alive and well and ranked as one of the top lieutenancies in the word for per capita contribution to the Holy Land. The Annual Meeting of 1995 was dedicated to the Conrads and the Grand Master; Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio came from Rome to present them with the Silver Palms of Jerusalem. Since Arthur s death five years ago, Virginia has continued as a faithful, valued and always gracious advisor to our Lieutenancy. Sir John D. O Malley: Sir John is a full professor and past chairman of the Department of Legal Studies at Loyola University in Chicago from which he holds BS, MA and JD degrees. He has been admitted to the practice of law in Illinois, Michigan and before the Supreme Court of the United States. Appointed in 1953 as the youngest assistant professor in the University, he held the position of Department Chair for 18 years and is today the senior faculty member in the entire university. Dr. O Malley is a recognized authority in negotiable instruments law and the former Executive Vice-President of the Harris Bank of Winnetka. Listed in Who s Who in America, his legal research articles have appeared in many business and legal journals and have been cited in higher court decisions in several states. John is also a noted collector of British decorations for gallantry, both civil and military, and has won numerous awards at international exhibits. In addition to his membership in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, John s activities have earned him membership in the Knights of Malta, Italy s Constantinian Order and the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus. His current hobbies of tennis and researching medals have replaced the somewhat more active pursuits of being a recreational pilot and an Army major with two extended tours of active duty. He and his late wife, Caroline, were admitted to the Order in 1989 and their sons John (Felicia) and Taylor (Paulette) are also members of our Lieutenancy. Sir John D. O Malley Sr. John served as Lieutenancy Treasurer for the past nine years. WINTER
8 News From Other Lieutenancies: A recent issue of LIGUORIAN featured a cover story on Lady Mary Higgins Clark, America s Queen of Suspense, Ms. Clark, whose first published story was in Extension magazine in 1956, indicated that Catholic values are intrinsic to her stories. Long active in numerous Catholic activities, Pope John Paul II recently made Clark a Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. In addition to being a Lady Commander of the Holy Sepulchre she is also a Dame of Malta. Eastern Lieutenancy member Monsignor James F. McCarthy was elevated to the episcopacy and will serve as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Eastern Lieutenancy Lieutenant Martin J. and Mary Moran were recently named a Knight and Dame of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II. Congratulations to Bishop McCarthy and Lieutenant and Lady Moran. CLASSIFIED AD Tom McKiernan has been reporter, typist, and editor of THE PAGE since late 1991 and before that he was our Ohio Representative. Tom was recently nominated to be a member of the Schools Commission for the Holy Land and would like to pass the editor s baton to another member. Qualifications include a computer/wordprocessor, minimal keyboarding skills and a fax machine. A patient spouse to serve as proofreader is most helpful. Interested?
