On the previous day, the Memorial Mass and Vigil Ceremony were celebrated at St. Norbert Abbey in neighboring DePere, WI by the Most Reverend Robert J. Banks, Bishop of Green Bay. In attendance were the Most Rev. Hermenegild J. Noyens, O.Praem., Abbot General of the Norbertine Fathers, the Rt. Rev. E. Thomas DeWane, O. Praem., Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey and Rt. Rev. Sylvester Killeen, O. Praem., Abbot Emeritus. The Most Reverend Aloysius J. Green Bay s Regency Suites Hotel was the venue for the Sunday Evening formal banquet. H.E. Sir Matthew J. Lamb announced his retirement as Lieutenant after ten year of leadership first as Secretary and more recently as our Lieutenant. He and Lady Rose received sustained applause and a brass stall plate with the arms of the Order and the dates of Sir Matthew s service. Those who have visited the chapels of the British Orders of Knighthood (I.E. the chapel of the Knights of the Garter at Windsor Castle) will notice that each choir stall has a plate commemorating every knight who has occupied that stall. Sir Matthew announced that Cardinal Caprio had selected SIR THOMAS J. McCABE as our new Lieutenant. The investiture weekend began with a Council Dinner at the Oneida Golf and Riding Club hosted by Lieutenant of Honor, Sir James Madison and Lady Doris Madigan and the entire investiture was superbly orchestrated by the Green Bay Committee under the direction of Sir Leo and Lady Fran Frigo who were widely applauded for their spectacular organizational skills. 2 Lieutenant s Message Dear Knights and Ladies: A few years ago a friend, colleague or relative proposed you for membership in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and you accepted. The Holy Father has given a special twofold mandate to us; strengthen our Christian life and support the Christian presence in the Holy Land. We strengthen our Christian life through prayer and public witness. There are four feast days that have been designated for prayer and witness by the Knights and Ladies: The Feast in honor of Holy Mary Queen of Palestine (Sunday within the Octave of the Assumption), September 14, the Triumph of the Cross, August 18, Feast of St. Helena and August 21, the Feast of St. Pius X, a former Grand Master of our Order. I ask you to consider doing the following on these special feast days: Pray for peace in Jerusalem so that the Christians, Jews and Muslims, all of whom worship the same God, can live in peace and justice. Have a home Mass with some of the Knights and Ladies and prospective members in your area. Ask you Pastor to include in the petitions at Mass the intention of peace in the Holy land. Discuss your concerns for the Christians in the Holy Land Learn about the Holy Land. Write an article on the Holy Land for the parish weekly bulletin Write an article or letter to your diocesan newspaper We, as Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre, support the Latin Patriarch, Michel Sabbah, through almsgiving so he can continue the work of keeping the Christian presence alive in the Holy Land and to be able to continue to provide those spiritual and special services necessary for a civilized society. Please continue to pray for the success of our work. Sincerely yours in Christ, Thomas J. McCabe, KGOHS Lieutenant SUMMER/FALL

B O O K & M A G A Z I N E R E V I E W S The following books and magazine article have been received by the editor. JERUSALEM AND THE HOLY LAND: THE FIRST ECUMENICAL PILGRIM S GUIDE. James McCormick Rhodes & Easton, Traverse City, MI FAX Previous guidebooks focused only on the key geographical points of biblical times, perhaps devoting three pages to explain four thousand years of history. Most people know bits and pieces about the Holy Land, but lack an overall knowledge of its history. The book was written to help accidental tourists turn into purposeful pilgrims by connecting the life of Jesus to the physical structures of sanctuaries, tombs and antiquities. McCormick is a trial judge involved in interfaith organizations in Michigan whose first trip to the Holy Land prompted return visits to gather information for this book. $12.95, 207 pages. OUR JERUSALEM: AN AMERICAN FAMILY IN THE HOLY CITY Bertha Spafford Vester Ariel Publishing House, Jerusalem A chronicle of an American family in the Holy Land through the eyes of Bertha Vester ( ) who saw life in Jerusalem intimately, first as a child growing up in the Old City and later as a leading figure in the community founded by her parents. The story of a well-to-do Chicago couple who came to the Holy Land in 1881 seeking a simple religious life after a series of personal tragedies. Joined by a number of like minded Americans and later, by a large group of villagers from Sweden, they founded a religious community which became known as the American Colony. Part of this original community is now the famous American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem. PALESTINIAN CHRISTIANS - THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL THE CATHOLIC WORLD REPORT Mary L. Schumacher April, 1998 Pgs Reports from Israel have alleged Muslim persecution of Christians in the Palestinian territories. The truth is not so simple. Bethlehem, once an 80% Christian town is now 80% Muslim and since it is now controlled by the Palestinian National Authority, the police force is largely Muslim. Lenghty, well written article. MODERN CRUSADERS Alfred Blasco PenRose Publishing Box 620 Little Egg Harbor, NJ, pages with many photographs, $20 soft cover. Sir Alfred J. Blasco, a Knight of the Collar of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, has written a comprehensive volume of the medieval and modern history of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre with a special emphasis on its growth in the United States of America. A welcome and scholarly work for anyone interested in the crusading ideal and the code of chivalry. SUMMER/FALL

In his first job after law school he shared an office with another young attorney, current U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. He is remembered by associates as a tough competitor who was able to balance emotionally charged cases with fairness to clients and compassion to victims. In the late 1960 s he and his law partner started a minority scholarship program for law school students at Notre Dame. He is survived by his wife, Lady Joan, two sons, two daughters and 12 grandchildren. Before the May 17, 1998 investiture there were only three members in the diocese: Bishop William Bullock and Bob and Barbara Ozburn. Inducted in May were Rev. Daniel Ganshert, Philip and Joyce Reuter and Rev. Delbert Schmelzer. With the support of Bishop Bullock and the new members it is anticipated that local membership will be strong enough to have the 2003 Investiture in Madison. The entire diocesan membership is shown here with Bishop Bullock. Chicago member Salvatore C. Argento recently presided at a ceremony welcoming the Prime Minister of Italy to Chicago. Our Grand Prior, Cardinal George addressed the 1500 guest reception, in perfect Italian, offering words of welcome and support.
