3 January/February 2015 Lenten Soup Supper and Programs Beginning February 25 th The Liturgies and Traditions of the Season Join us as we examine the liturgies and traditions of Lent and Holy Week. We ll examine the history, meaning and customs of a variety of traditions and services that reflect our understanding of this season of penitence and preparation. 5:30 five-thirty service 6:00 Soup Supper 6:45 Program Sign up sheets for soups and breads can be found in Battin Hall. Page 2 Backpacks and New Year's Resolutions It's the second week of 2015, and you've probably already fallen off the New Year's resolution wagon--perhaps it's been a few days since you've made it to the gym (it's too cold to drive there in shorts, right?), maybe that vow not to let your mental health be dictated by a group of athletic young men in helmets and shoulder pads fell away by the end of New Year's night, which in turn led to breaking that resolution about only having two beers on any one night. Well, here's a resolution you can keep, and improve others' lives in the process. Each week, pick up enough items to fill a child's backpack for the Backpack Buddies program. A couple cans of ravioli or Spaghetti Os, a couple cans of juice or Vienna sausage, some instant oatmeal pouches, a box of granola bars or fruit cups, and a few Capri Suns will tide over an entire family during the weekends when their kids are not taking their meals at school. Holy Nativity feeds 104 kids this way, every week, and your resolution to join in the effort is the key to making sure we meet this commitment as a congregation. Holy Nativity Episcopal School 13th Annual 5K Run, Walk, & 1-mile Fun Run Saturday, February 7, 2015 Entry Forms are in the church office and on the welcome table.. or you can download a copy from the church s website,

4 Page 4 The Nativity Scene LAUNDRY LOVE NEEDS YOU! The story of Laundry Love began when T-Bone (Eric), a homeless gentleman living in Ventura, California was asked a question: How can we come alongside your life in a way that would matter? Eric s response was honest and practical. If I had clean clothes, I think people would treat me like a human being. Every single Laundry Love effort, or Laundry Love spin off and/or partnership around the U.S. is attached to this man. Do you have any winter coats or gloves or scarves that you would like to give away? The people that come to dinner at Supper at Grace can use anything that you may have. Please drop off your items in Battin Hall! Laundry Love believes that through the neutral space of a laundromat, every guest and stranger can become a friend. The Laundry Love initiative consists of regular opportunities to help people who are struggling financially by assisting them with doing their laundry. Our first local Laundry Love effort is scheduled for Thursday, January 29 th from 9am-3pm at Wash Depot on 11 th Street next door to the Bay County Library. Volunteers are needed to coordinate breakfast and lunch, and simply engage in friendly conversation. We also need cash donations. Those interested in finding out more about how they can contribute to make this and future Laundry Love efforts a success can contact David Smith at (850) or johndavidsmith56@gmail.com. You can also explore the national Laundry Love website at

5 January/February 2015 Adult Christian Education: Father Tom Page 4 Adult Sunday School meets faithfully every Sunday morning through the double doors at the end of the brick road, Mary Stuart Poole Library. Between services: 9:15 to 10:15. Bring your coffee and cookie. We read and discuss any number of things: the Church Season, the Lectionary Readings for the Sunday, a particular Bible book, story or theme. Members of the group always have a say in what we tackle. The class is led by Mike Dickey and Tom Weller, and always is fun. No registration, all materials provided, come one come all. Tuesday Morning Bible Seminar will resume on February 3rd after our holiday season break. This will be our new startup for Spring 2015 and everyone is invited and welcome, Christian or not, church member or not, parishioner or not, come and bring a friend. Starting anew, this new season we ll be meeting in the Mary Stuart Poole Library instead of Fr. Tom s office conference room Through the Garage. I do appreciate an (twellerpc@gmail.com) or a phone call to Madge ( ) from interested folks, so that we know about how many to count on. We gather between about 9:30 for visiting and coffee, tea, little snack, sit down at 10:00, and begin promptly at 10:05 with opening prayer to gather the Holy Spirit in the midst of us. Class adjourns promptly at 11:15. We ll have at least a session or two on Mark s gospel to get started, then the group will help decide our course of reading, study and discussion. This is a seminar session with Fr. Tom as mentor not teacher, and is always tremendous fun. No Bible knowledge required, only interest and enthusiasm. There are always large-print handouts, and plenty of Bibles are available, so don t let the fact that you don t own a Study Bible keep you from coming. We also will be discussing Lent itself a bit in both classes, Sunday School and Bible Seminar, and taking notice of liturgical and other changes during the season and Sunday worship that make Lent different and special. Don't miss it!! Tom+ FEED MY SHEEP LADIES MAKING CASSEROLES!

We are a group of women who have studied the practices of St. Benedict and developed our own Rule of Life. That Rule incorporates supporting our parish and clergy with prayer and service. The program of study is self-directed, so you learn at your own rate and comfort level. If you think this might be a new opportunity for you to serve the Lord, please contact Gayle Ahrens, Donna Jangula, Edyth Brown, or Laura Johnson. We would love to have you join us for lunch and fellowship. HOSPITALITY MINISTRY MEETING Feb. 8, 2015 at 9:15 am If you ve signed up to be part of the Hospitality Ministry (bake bread, prepare welcome bags, follow-up with visitors, plan welcome receptions, etc.) please mark your calendars for a very important organizational meeting SUNDAY, FEB. 8 TH starting at 9:15 in Battin Hall. This includes greeters and ushers, who are a very important part of our hospitality outreach. Questions? Contact Mike Harding, or mharding@mmitv.com.

8 Page 8 Music Notes by Marqua Brunette, Director of Choirs The Nativity Scene It always seems appropriate to begin the New Year by thanking all of the dedicated choir members and musicians who helped to make our Advent and Christmas services so special. As their Director, I offer my sincerest thanks to each and every one of them from the bottom of my heart! They did an outstanding job and their hard work and dedication were well worth it. The Children s Choir sang beautifully for the Lessons and Carols service and out did themselves singing on Pajama Sunday, not to mention Christmas Eve. It was a very busy December for all of the children and they rose to the occasions. Whether they are robed in their red choir robes, pajamas, or pageant costumes, they sing with complete abandon and delight. They take their music ministry very seriously and love sharing their song! I am also blessed with a wonderful group of parents always ready to lend an extra hand. Now we set our sights on preparing to sing for future Sundays ahead. If your child has not participated in Children s Choir so far and wishes to do so, this is a great time to start because we begin all new music. Lessons and Carols was an incredibly beautiful evening of music and word lessons were read and heard, music sung, and word and lessons put into action right before our eyes. Our attendance was outstanding. Once again we garnered wonderful publicity prior, along with our reputation for this special service. The highlight of this was receiving three front page color photos from the service in The News Herald the following morning! Special thanks are extended to everyone who participated from greeters to readers to voices to acolytes to fabulous musicians to soloists and to all who helped in every way bless you and thank you! Every part of the evening is important altar preparations, programs printed, flowers arranged, food ordered, tables set, floors swept and areas cleaned. This is a team effort and event and thanks go to all who assisted in any and all ways. Our efforts were well received - it was glorious! The biggest challenge was the flu and virus bugs which kept several members from not being able to sing with us that night, not to mention those who were sick and had to miss rehearsals along the way. Again this year for Lessons and Carols, both of our adult choirs, The Rite One and s, joined in song, making for a large and full choir with 20 voices. We worked on this music for months and it showed. There were comments about it being the best one ever so we were all very pleased and gratified. Christmas Eve was also an evening with beautiful music by our and many musicians. The night was filled with the glory of Christ s birth in all of our musical offerings. Last of all, my thanks turn to God for giving us His Son, whose birth inspired such beautiful music and scripture and for our gift of music for sharing that blessed story. Ash Wednesday is February 18 th so Lent begins rather early this year. That means we must start working on Lenten music right away. As in past years, the Chancel Choir will be singing for the evening Ash Wednesday service. This is always a very meaningful service for all who participate and attend. ***** We continue to invite you to join us. YOUR voice is welcome to join one of our fine choirs! We have much music to sing and Sundays come every seven days! We look forward to seeing you at one of these rehearsals: The Thursday evenings in the church from 6:30 8:30 PM and Sunday mornings from 9:30 10:15 AM The Rite One Choir Thursday evenings in the church from 5:30 6:30 PM The Children s Choir Wednesday afternoons in the Choir Office from 4:00 5:10 PM May each of you have a blessed New Year and keep a song in your heart!

Seeing them enjoy A Morning with St. Nicholas, wearing and sharing pajamas in church, and participating in the Christmas Pageant was made even better by the belief that they are building a foundation of memories and knowledge of the meaning and traditions of Christmas in church. Abundant thanks go to our parents and volunteers for their attitudes of cooperation and contributions of time, talents, and treasure. In addition, many thanks are offered to all who let our performers and readers know how very special, valued, and loved they are here at Holy Nativity. Mark your calendars for more upcoming events that appeal to children. Although the young children may not be as interested in the business of the Annual Parish Meeting on January 25, they do love the breakfast, and the nursery will be open for them. On Souper Bowl Sunday we get to dress to support our favorite teams and bring soup to support two of our Outreach Ministries, Backpacks and the Food Bank. Remember too that the Wednesday Evening programs are fun for the children. At five-thirty, come join us. Beverly McDaniel
