Smith Nursery Becky Vincent Newsletter Editor & Webmaster Libbi Crowe Mother Beth s Message Dear Friends, Moving changes almost everything! It unearths a lot too. As I was packing, I came across a little cache of paper that I ve been saving and moving with me for years clippings and notes that have held meaning for me through the years. One of these was taken from a church newsletter from many years ago. The church was Grace in Norwalk, CT that was the first Episcopal Church I attended. There is no date on the clipping, but it must have been around 1990 when I first began to attend their mid-week healing service. The clipping from the rector s column is an ancient antiphon for the first Sunday after Christmas. Here is what it says: While all things were in quiet silence, and night was in the midst of her swift course, thine Almighty Word, O Lord, Leaped down from heaven out of thy royal throne. Alleluia. Alleluia, indeed! It gives me shivers to remember so many deep, still drives home after the midnight mass on Christmas Eve. There s never much traffic on these late-night drives home. Often it is crystal clear with a beautiful winter moon and stars. Sometimes depending on where I am it is snowing instead, making for a hushed and gorgeous scene. But wherever I am, I drive home thinking of this antiphon and eternally wonderful moment when the Almighty Word leapt down. It takes my breath away to think of it a part of God himself leaving that heavenly throne and becoming incarnate to be with us. This sweet sentence calls us forward into life with that Almighty Word Jesus Christ and it is what we celebrate as the church year moves forward from Christmas into Epiphany and on and on. I am reminded that Christians have been walking this journey through time out of mind. You and I are participants in a timeless journey and a well-worn path. And each new year reminds us of January 2015 God s call to us to follow the path of preparing for and welcoming the Christ Child into our midst. We each prepared for Christmas in our own ways both individually and as priest and parish. We have been preparing to come together and meet each other. And now we begin a process of getting to know each other and learning how to love one another. Excitement has marked my path as I ve packed up, traveled afar and prepare to move into house and church. The questions on my mind are many, but summed up they are questions of discernment about where God is calling us and what he wants us to do in order to share the Good News of Christ. These questions are ones that should be a part of every Christian s journey. The path is hardly ever clear. In our walk of faith and as we follow the Lord, we are shown only a little bit of it at a time. Still, we have marching orders and are given some direction. Those directions are mostly about loving the Lord and each other and taking this Good News of Love out into the world where it is so (Continued on page 3)

3 January Canterbury Tales (Continued from page 1) sorely needed. Each of us has been blessed with the gift of faith or we wouldn t be connected to the church. Sometimes that gift glows deeply within us. At other times it is barely perceptible. This is just the way of it. Once you ve had faith though, it never leaves completely. It is a gift that is enhanced by giving it away to others, and this is clearly the direction we are to travel. Join me in this journey as we follow this Almighty Word that leapt down into our midst on Christmas as the night was in her swift course. Alleluia! Mother Beth s Office Hours Mother Beth will be in the parish office Monday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (including Holy Eucharist with prayers for healing at 9:30 a.m.) Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. And by appointment if you need to confer with her on another day. Supper Clubs Supper Club January 24! Supper Club will be meeting on Saturday January 24 to kick off the New Year. Please sign up on the sheet posted on the Office door if you would like to join or rejoin this friendly group and enjoy evenings of good food, conversation and laughter. Supper Club meets monthly, usually in the homes of members, but occasionally we dine out at the park, the beach or a ball game. Numbers will determine whether we remain as one larger group or split into smaller groups The venue for our first meeting of the year will either be at the home of Janet and Peter Wright or in Henderson Hall depending on numbers. Please sign up promptly and certainly no later than January 18. Anyone can participate, so please grab this chance to get to know other parishioners better! Lenten Booklets Sign up Deadline: Feb. 8! Each year, the parish members write a daily meditation booklet as a ministry to one another for the season of Lent. This booklet is a way that we can keep Lent together, as a community, by sharing our reflections with each other. Ash Wednesday is February 18, so we have to get busy! It would be great to have them available by Sunday February 15, so it would be a big help if you could take an assignment from the narthex and finish it by February 8 Please remember when you take an assignment, to put your name on the chart on the date you chose. That way I know who has what! PLEASE your submission to libbi.crowe@gmail.com, and THANK YOU! Annual Meeting Results Congratulations to the new Vestry members, Janet Wright, Brenda Whidden, and Ann Garcia-Lucas. Congratulations also to the Delegates to the Diocesan Convention, Eric Straight, Linda Gray and Brenda Whidden. Alternates are Sid Gray and Libbi Crowe. Thank you for serving St. Augustine's! Janet Wright will be in charge of Music and Liturgy. Brenda Whidden and Ann Garcia-Lucas will decided on their vestry areas at the January Vestry meeting.

6 January Canterbury Tales Around the Parish & Diocese Bishop Election After receiving resumes, profiles, and answers to questionnaires, the committee for the search for a new bishop has made selections of those candidates that best fit their criteria. The committee then conducted a number of Skype interviews and got to know each candidate. At the conclusion of that process the committee again narrowed the field. The next step is to have a retreat where the committee will have an opportunity to have face to face interviews with our candidates; to ask difficult questions; observe how they preach, teach and conduct a worship service, and get a sense of the depth of their spirituality. All of this is leading to the nomination of four to seven well qualified candidates, any one of whom we would be proud to have as our next bishop. The committee is expected to make that decision in January and present the slate to the standing committee at its meeting in December. The slate of nominees for the Fourth Bishop of the Central Gulf Coast will be announced by the Standing Committee in early December. Please mark your calendar for January 2015 to meet the nominees. These meetings are open to all members of Episcopal parishes or missions in the Diocese. The schedule is: Monday, January 19 Lunch* 11:00 am to 12:45 pm at St. Francis of Assisi, Gulf Breeze Walkabout** 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Nativity, Dothan Tuesday, January 20 Lunch* 11:00 am to 1:15 pm at St. Mary s, Andalusia Walkabout** 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at St. John s, Monroeville Wednesday, January 21 Walkabout** 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at St. Paul s, Daphne *Lunch meetings will be open to all members of the Diocese. The process for making lunch reservations will be announced by the Transition Committee as the time gets closer. Lunches will be informal times to meet the nominees. There will be no formal programs at these events. **Three walkabout sessions will be held as all nominees travel around the Diocese together. At each location anyone, not only the lay convention delegates and clergy who will vote at the election convention, can gather to hear from and question the nominees as part of the discernment and calling of a new bishop. Again, the process for reservations and the exact agenda for these events will be announced later. Please continue to pray for the candidates, and our committee as they continue in this process of discernment. Episcopal Peace Fellowship The Episcopal Peace Fellowship, a national organization connecting Episcopalians seeking and peaceful solutions to social problems, will hold an organizational meeting Thursday, January 13, to found a chapter in the Central Gulf Coast. The first goal of the EPF chapter in the Central Gulf Coast will be to provide a place where people can speak freely and decide how to address issues of concern. "There is a reason for a group of this kind," said Bill Sloan, spokesman for the group. He mentioned the need for a peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine strife, the wrongful use of U.S. military force as an instrument of foreign policy, threats to Iran, the death penalty, gun violence in the U.S., and violence to God's creation. "Such issues can be politically controversial," Sloan said. "In many congregations, they are risky and potentially divisive to speak about, and especially to act on." The Episcopal Peace Fellowship is an institution of the Episcopal Church. Neither EPF nor the new Central Gulf Coast chapter is associated with a particular church. The organizational meeting will begin at 6:00 pm, January 13, at 1613 E. Jordan St., Pensacola. A convener or chairperson will be elected and work will begin on issues and action. A light dinner and beverages will be provided. For more information about Episcopal Peace Fellowship, visit the EPF website at Become a member of EPF by making the pledge of commitment online or by mail. Or contact Bill Sloan with questions concerning the new chapter at wmsloan35@gmail.com or (850)
