It was with much sadness that a dear friend of our Community, Father Savas Constantinou fell asleep in the Lord on the afternoon of January 2nd. Father Sav had suffered a heart attack in November and had been hospitalized before being released to go home the week before Christmas. I will always be grateful for my relationship with Father Sav as a brother and co-celebrant. When I first came to Newport News, the first sacraments that I celebrated at our Church were with Father Sav. What a lasting tribute to be invited to attend weddings and baptisms of the youth that you had made a difference in their lives. Anyone who knew him knows that Father Sav had a profound love for youth. His Funeral service at the Annunciation cathedral in Norfolk on January 8th was a lasting and loving tribute. The pews of the cathedral were filled with people standing as well. I was honored to speak at the Makaria and reflect on my relationship with this faithful servant of the Lord. The memory of Father Sav will live on as those who were Blessed to share him with his beloved Presvytera Athena, his daughter Presvytera Rene and her husband Father Michael Lambakis and their two sons Andrew and Nicholas, we will always have a smile on our faces when remembering the great impact that this soldier of Christ had on our lives. C HOIR DIRECTOR RENEE ROOT RECEIVES AWARD The Patriarch Athenagoras medal for distinguished contributions to church music was bestowed upon our own beloved Choir Director Renee Root at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 20. A reception followed in the Sacalis Hall. The EFGOCM Executive Board members and the Choirs of Norfolk, Richmond and Falls Church were present singing Glory to God as part of this special occasion. Deacon Chrysostomos Gilbert of the Archdiocese was also present to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. See Choir Notes from Renee Root on page 5.

FEBRUARY 3 EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED 16th Sunday of Matthew The Holy Hieromartyr Haralampus This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese having the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus ( ), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age. St. Haralampus is commemorated on February 10th, with the exception when this date falls on the Saturday of the Souls preceding Lent or on Clean Monday (the first day of Lent), in which case the feast is celebrated on February 9th. All rights reserved WISDOM FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS Faith is the beginning of our union with God: the true believers are the stone of the church of God, prepared for the edifice of God the Father, which is raised up to the heights by the power of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Cross and help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). The works of faith are love, peace, longsuffering, mercy, humility, bearing one's cross and life by the Spirit. True faith cannot remain without works. One who truly believes will also surely perform good works. SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Sunday of the Canaanite Theodore the Tyro, Great Martyr Saint Theodore who was from Amasia of Pontus, contested during the reign of Maximian ( ). He was called Tyro, from the Latin <i>tiro</i>, because he was a newly enlisted recruit. When it was reported that he was a Christian, he boldly confessed Christ; the ruler, hoping that he would repent, gave him time to consider the matter more completely and then give answer. Theodore gave answer by setting fire to the temple of Cybele, the "mother of the gods," and for this he suffered a martyr's death by fire. See also the First Saturday of the Fast. All rights reserved WISDOM FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS She had a great perfection of faith. She had no uncertainty about His divine majesty. She had no small measure of the virtue of patience. Yet the pitying Physician of the pitiful disdained her petitions. He kept her waiting for answer in order to demonstrate to us the perseverence of this woman that we can always imitate. She had the characteristics of constancy and humility. She willingly embraced the indignity she received, and even confirmed the Lord`s statement. This woman rightly signifies the faith and devotion of the Church gathered from the nations - Saint Bede, Hom. I. 22, In Lent, Homilies on the Gospels, Bk. One, 216, 217. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee First & Second Finding of the Venerable Head of John the Baptist The first finding came to pass during the middle years of the fourth century, through a revelation of the holy Forerunner to two monks, who came to Jerusalem to worship our Saviour's Tomb. One of them took the venerable head in a clay jar to Emesa in Syria. After his death it went from the hands of one person to another, until it came into the possession of a certain priest-monk named Eustathius, an Arian. Because he ascribed to his own false belief the miracles wrought through the relic of the holy Baptist, he was driven from the cave in which he dwelt, and by dispensation forsook the holy head, which was again made known through a revelation of Saint John, and was found in a water jar, about the year 430, in the days of the Emperor Theodosius the Younger, when Uranius was Bishop of Emesa. This award is given yearly to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to church music in their Metropolises. The Athenagoras Medallion is awarded by the National Forum, and each Metropolis Church Music Federation chooses its own recipient for this national award. It was to be presented to me at the November 2012 Choir Conference of our Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians in Toms River, NJ, but Hurricane Sandy forced us to cancel the conference. This cancellation turned out to be a blessing for me, because I was able to receive this honor from my own Priest in my own Church with my own Choir Family and Congregation present! And to be joined by the National Forum President, Maria Keritsis, members of the EFGOCM Executive Board, members of the Choirs of Annunciation (Norfolk), Saints Constantine and Helen (Richmond), and St. Katherine (Falls church), and Deacon Chrysostomos Gilbert made this great honor even more poignantly moving for me! The Choir was amazing, and conducting it was the most fun I have ever had conducting a choir! And what a beautiful reception Athena Savvas and Alexa Garrison organized! It was fit for a queen! Thank you to all who contributed in any way to this wonderful weekend. An mp3 recording (audio) and a DVD recording of the Liturgy that day will be available. George, the Choir, and the entire Community for all the love and support you have shown me over the years. Zoe & Elias Doulgerakis are the infant s maternal grandparents. May the blessings of our Church be with the newly-churched infant, her parents and her entire family. BAPTISMS: The infant son of Nicole & Christopher Mundy was baptized in our Church on December 15 and given the name Julian Maximillian by his godmother, Paula Detweiler. The infant daughter of Deana Zaharopoulos & Robert Brooks was baptized in our Church on December 16 and given the name Kathryn Nicole by her godparents, Georgia Salih and Yianni Stratas. We welcome into our Faith the newly-baptized infants and congratulate their parents, grandparents, godparents and their entire families. Na sas zisoun!!!!!! WEDDINGS: Our best wishes and sincere congratulations to Eva Malliarakis & Tore DeBella whose marriage was solemnized in our Church on December 1. 7 The Cross+Roads Page 7 C LUB AND COMMUNITY NEWS PHILOPTOCHOS: Once again we are grateful to Kathy Dermanis who has worked tirelessly to collect and send out the gift cards our Philoptochos members, as well as many others, donated for the victims of Super Storm Sandy. Also, many thanks to Christina Thames for taking care of the IOCC emergency clean-up kits for the same victims. Both December and January were months of heightened activity for Philoptochos, and we thank all our members (as well as a few gentlemen nonmembers) who worked to prepare and bake the Vasilopites, our premier fund-raising project. Also, many thanks to all those ladies who cooked and served the Vasilopita Luncheon. Last but not least a big THANK YOU to our wonderful patrons whose continued support enables us to fund our various charitable endeavors. The Philoptochos Center for Philanthropy which was recently purchased by the National Philoptochos was in part funded by each local chapter contributing $1,000. Several Philoptochos members, as well as nonmembers made contributions totaling $1,000 so that no money was taken out of our treasury. Spearheading the collection effort was Tasia Savrides. HELLENIC WOMAN S PENELOPE SOCIETY The February meeting of the Hellenic Woman s Penelope Society (HWPS) will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 6:30 pm at the Hellenic Center. Helen Siokis will serve as hostess. It is imperative that members attend this meeting, since we will be discussing the final preparations for the Dinner Theater. The Fourteenth Annual Dinner Theater, sponsored by the Hellenic Woman s Penelope Society, will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at the Hellenic Community Center, 60 Traverse Road, Newport News, VA The Poquoson Island Players will present the Ken Ludwig comedy, The Fox on the Fairway. The Fox on the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp, which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the top romantic shenanigans, it s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers classics. It is a charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man s eternal love affair with golf. The dinner menu will consist of: Greek Salad with Feta Cheese and Olives Pastitsio and Grilled Chicken Green Beans with Yellow Squash a la Greque Homemade Bread and Butter Coffee or Iced Tea Greek Hors d oeuvres and wine at 6:00 p.m. will be followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and curtain at 8:00 p.m. During intermission, Lemon Torte will be served with coffee. We also received contributions of treasure from 99 nonpledged parishioners totaling $41,716. The total contributions of treasure from pledged and nonpledged parishioners were $193,466. While commitments of treasure are easy to measure, our parishioners commitments of time and talent are almost impossible to accurately reflect in an article or account for in a spreadsheet. Hidden behind those dollar signs are literally several thousand hours our faithful dedicate in the various ministries of our Church. Hidden behind those numbers are countless offerings of God-given talents dedicated in Christ s service. All of these gifts time, talent, and treasure, contribute to the overall mission accomplishment of our Church and for which, I offer my heartfelt appreciation. The post sales are ongoing to sell the remaining festival items & recoup some revenue. This again proves we need our Stewardship to support the Church & community and not depend on the festivals for our day to day operations. Committee Reports Stewardship: By Barry Hendricks VIA Fellowship Gatherings at the homes of the Zambas, Savrides, Hendrick & Suns families had about eighty parishioners attend. Barry s confident those who attended walked away with a positive spiritual experience. Plan on having similar gatherings in the Spring. Stewards of the Year Hope Zambas was recognized on 18 Nov 12. Mike Sun and Kurt & Paula Detweiler will be recognized on 2 Dec 12. Stewardship Commitment Sunday We had sixty-nine (69) parishioners submit their Stewardship form with pledges of $82,625 & seventeen (17) youth forms were submitted. Youth: By Christina Thames attached with minutes. House / Education: By John Dermanis. There are Hall rentals on December 1, 15 & 29. In January there is the Langley Credit Union rental. Doulgerakis asked about painting the hall. He estimates the paint cost at $ and the scissor lift rental for $ It will take about a week to accomplish. Priest s Report: Last Sunday while leaving church FR. Gregory MacGregor caught a youth trying to get into cars. Father George has made arrangements with Newport News Police Department to provide a presence between 10:00 AM 1:00 PM. Chalkias brought up security in the Narthex and ushers office on Sundays especially during the holiday season. Paumier- Ushers on the schedule need to be there on their Sunday s or find a replacement if they can not be there. For 2013 usher s schedule will work out a 5-person rotation in lieu of the present 4-person rotation. Parish Council Elections 93 parishioners voted. Thursday was good but Friday and Saturday suffered due to Sandy. The unused dry goods and produce were returned for credit. Some items have been sold to various church clubs and we are selling items to the community. Library Mold Restoration. After teleconference with Scott Tucker from Advanced Restoration today. Need estimate from Advance Restoration to HEPA clean books/items before removal and storage. After this cleaning the books requiring additional restoration/ remediation will be determined. (Tucker is on company travel for the next 2-3 weeks. Additional book restoration/remediation cost is $115 per cubic foot plus shipping costs, based on weight to a book restoration company in Livonia, MI. Cost - TBD. Air Test (before & after) / Carpet removal / Mold Remediation of shelves & walls - Estimate $3106. Provide additional ventilation/air movement in the library by adding vent louvers in the door/leave the door open during the day. Leave the AC on low to remove humidity. New floor Elias to check on quantity of the remaining tiles from the front hall renovation to see if there are enough to complete the library. New Business: New Years Eve Dance This year Annunciation Cathedral, Norfolk, VA is hosting. Cost is $35.00 for adults, $10.00 for children and includes light hors d'oeuvre & breakfast. The work and ministry of our Parish will include proclaiming the Gospel, sanctifying the faithful through God's grace in worship, the Divine Liturgy and the Sacraments, and enhancing their spiritual life. We will fulfill the great commission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by inviting others into the Church through Baptism and/or Chrismation, educating them in the Orthodox Faith through the establishment of programs, schools and philanthropic activities, and implementing Christian ministries.
