Just the mere fact that we are alive demonstrates that we have received the gift of another 365 days in which to do the work of the Lord. Each one of us has been given by the Lord the vision to combat the darkness that exists. With this vision we must execute patience especially when darkness follows. God will bring the necessary vision into our lives if we will wait on His timing. We live in a period of time when everything should be done quickly. As a society we have lost our ability to show and practice patience. As parents are we not patient with our children? Have we not come to the realization that our children, in their growing process needed time to mature both physically and theologically? My mentor, Father Byron Papanikolaou of Blessed memory, had on his desk a nameplate that simply said IPOMONI translated patience. Our Parish of Saints Constantine and Helen in Palos Hills, Illinois was a large Parish and he, Father Byron served the Parish including his years of retirement for 55 years. He saw a great deal of people in that period of time and his answer to their issues was simply IPOMONI. It is quite difficult to have patience; it is even more difficult when we shy away from making the effort has seen one month go by, what did we do in January to make ourselves better, what did we do to make our Church better, and what do we plan to do in the next eleven months? These are just three questions to ponder, there are more. Saint Paul writes in His first letter to the Corinthians (3:11) For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Saint Paul saw it necessary in his letter to the good people of Corinth that the building up that was occurring at that time was also promoting division amongst the people. Paul was not looking for any kind of loyalty from the people, what he, Saint Paul was teaching and preaching was loyalty to Christ as the foundation for healthy Christian living. Let us build upon the firm foundation that was laid in the formation of our faith in the first century and what was started in Newport News in F EBRUARY 21: TRIODION BEGINS PUBLICAN AND PHARISEE The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for filthy lucre's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humblemindedness. Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Fortyday Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This first of Triodion week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights. FEBRUARY 7 EPISTLE READING 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 GOSPEL READING Matthew 25:14-30 The Lord said this parable: "A man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was ACOLYTES FEBRUARY 14 Team A - Dominic Peri Kostas Polyzos, Jorgie Polyzos, James St. Martin, Yianni Tsimplekis, Dean Peri FEBRUARY 21 Team B - Christian Detweiler Hayden Hendricks, Michael Christou, Anthony Capobianco, Cris Campbell, Ethan Detweiler FEBRUARY 7 & 28 Team C - Joseph Dennie Georgios Haramis, Christos Konstantinou, Christopher Myers, Soterios Tofalli, Kyprianos Tofalli EPISTLE READERS February 7: Christina Constantine February 14: GOYA February 21: Helen George February 28: Howard Mandeville P ARISH MINISTRIES & ORGANIZATIONS Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA) Mary Katherine Galoozis, President Kent Paumier, Advisor Young Adult League (YAL) Anastasia Theodorogiannis, President Golden Hearts Chris Fotiou, President Order of AHEPA Newport News Tom Georges, President Daughters of Penelope Joanna Vallas, President Hellenic Womens Penelope Society Marika Anthony, President Hellenic Youth Dancers Bobby Garofalis, Director

For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." As he said these things he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED 16th Sunday of Matthew Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsacus Luke of Mount Stirion Theopemptos the Martyr & his Companions Afterfeast of the Presentation of Our Lord and Savior in the Temple HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Presentation in the First Mode Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, for from thee hath risen the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, enlightening those in darkness. Rejoice, thou also, O righteous Elder, as thou receivest in thine arms the Redeemer of our souls, Who also granteth unto us the Resurrection. WISDOM OF THE FATHERS There is an old saying: 'Excesses meet.' Too much fasting and too much eating come to the same end. Keeping too long a vigil brings the same disastrous cost as... sluggishness... Too much self-denial brings weakness and induces the same condition as carelessness. Often I have seen men who would not be snared by gluttony fall, nevertheless, through immoderate fasting and tumble in weakness into the very urge which they had overcome. Unmeasured vigils and foolish denial of rest overcame those whom sleep could not overcome. Therefore, 'fortified to right and to left in the armor of justice,' as the apostle says (2 Cor. 6:7), life must be lived with due measure and, with discernment for a guide, the road must be traveled between the two kinds of excess so that in the end we may not allow ourselves to be diverted from the pathway of restraint which has been laid down for us nor fall through dangerous carelessness into the urgings of gluttony and selfindulgence. St. John Cassian, Conferences, Conference Two: On Discernment no. 16; Paulist Press pg. 76, 5th century FEBRUARY 14 EPISTLE READING 2 Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1 GOSPEL READING Matthew 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly. SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Nicholas the New Martyr of Corinth Sunday of the Canaanite Cyril, Equal-to-the-Apostles & Teacher of the Slavs Holy Father Auxentius of the Mountain Eusebius the Righteous of Syria HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world. WISDOM OF THE FATHERS She had a great perfection of faith. She had no uncertainty about His divine majesty. She had no small measure of the virtue of patience. Yet the pitying Physician of the pitiful disdained her petitions. He kept her waiting for answer in order to demonstrate to us the perseverence of this woman that we can always imitate. She had the characteristics of constancy and humility. She willingly embraced the indignity she received, and even confirmed the Lord`s statement. This woman rightly signifies the faith and devotion of the Church gathered from the nations. Saint Bede, Hom. I. 22, In Lent, Homilies on the Gospels, Bk. One, 216, 217. We thank all our hardworking members for giving so much of their time and talent during this past Holiday Season. Our VA- SILOPITES project was a huge success as was our VALILOPITA LUNCHEON, the proceeds of which were earmarked for Saint Basil's Academy. Again, many thanks to everyone. Also our sincere thanks to Athena Savvas, another dedicated Philoptochos member, who chaired and worked very hard selling tickets for our New Year's Lira Raffle will find us continuing with our efforts top help those who need our help. Therefore, in that spirit of helping and giving, we continue to do our AOK by visiting the patients receiving chemotherapy at Virginia Oncology and bringing them a light lunch of sandwiches, chips, cookies, etc. every Monday. Once more we ask those in Philoptochos as well as in our Church Community who have yet to participate in this very worthwhile project to consider doing so. Please, call Ellie Costulis, , and find out how you can help. Also, our USO/Care Package Committee headed by Kathy Dermanis and assisted by Helen George continue to seek out members of our Orthodox Community, as well as the Community at large who are deployed at the various military endeavors throughout the world and send them packages and cheerful reminders of home and family. Our Literacy Outreach Committee is also continuing with their collection of school items and cleaning supplies and giving them to schools in our area which are in need of these items and whose budgets do not cover them. Please, help us help those in need of whatever nature, and the best way to do that is to become a member of Philoptochos. On Sunday, February 14, following Church Services, Philoptochos will host a Membership Tea, giving everyone the opportunity to acquaint themselves with our Society and its work and to extend a special invitation to all in our Community to join us. Our dues are only $25.00 a year. Please, come and see what you can do by joining us. We're looking forward to welcoming you into our Saint Helen Chapter of the Philoptochos. For 2016 our obligations include three mandatory and three voluntary projects. In past issues of the Cross+Roads, we indicated the first mandatory obligation - Domestic Family Violence Center: Penelope House, Mobile, AL and the first voluntary obligation - The Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc. Our second mandatory obligation for the year is the Domestic Family Violence Center: Penelope Place, Brocton, MA which is a collaboration between the Daughters of Penelope and Health Imperatives, a 24/7 emergency residence in the City of Brocton, MA for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Residents live at Penelope Place for an average of 90 days. During that time Penelope's Place staff provides a safe place for healing from the trauma of domestic violence. Each resident is assigned to a primary staff person who works with the resident and her family to develop goals to achieve self-sufficiency upon leaving Penelope Place. Services provided include counseling, housing, legal and medical advocacy, life skills, and job coaching. In addition, children receive services from a specialized child therapist. Penelope Place can accommodate up to five families at any time. The second voluntary project identified for this year is Melissa's Orphanage for Girls, which was established in 1921, and accommodates 28 girls aged years old who have been removed from their families following a court order due to instances of maltreatment, abuse or abandonment. The goal of the Orphanage is to substitute as well as possible the care and nurture that would have been provided with a healthy family environment. Sisters, please remember to be bringing to our meetings grooming items which sister Kathy Matthews takes to local shelters that are in need of them. We remind our members that dues are payable now. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." WISDOM OF THE FATHERS It is possible for those who have come back again after repentance to shine with much lustre, and oftentimes more than those who have never fallen at all, I have demonstrated from the divine writings.
