What better way to describe the followers of Jesus than branches. Some of the branches have become fruit bearing branches; whereas others are useless because they bear no fruit. There are three ways in which we can be useless branches. First we can refuse to listen to Jesus Christ at all. Secondly we can listen to Him and then not support Him b any deeds. Thirdly we can accept Him as Lord and then when things seem too difficult we can abandon Him. Do any of us want to follow any of these ways? No one ever said that being a Christian was going to be easy. We celebrate as a Nation a day of independence on the Fourth of July. On this Fourth of July we are to sit back and realize how truly fortunate we are to live in a land that is free and let us always remember the struggle of the early Americans endured in order to establish this Nation that we refer to as home. These patriots faced the awesome responsibility of shaping this nation a home for freedom and democracy. Things did become difficult, tension arose between them but they bore the fruit of what we call America. The fruit that grows in orchards across the world feeds the appetites of many; the fruit that grows in Holy Scripture feeds all. Let us not let this summer go by as a period of time from vacationing from our Orthodox Church for as we know there is no vacation from God. Feast of the Holy, Glorious, and All- Praiseworthy Chiefs of the Apostles, Peter and Paul June 29. The Orthodox Church has a beautiful presentation of the importance and prominence of the Apostles Peter and Paul with the icon that shows both Apostles standing together holding an image of the Church. Both Apostles, being chosen by our Lord, were instrumental in the establishment and growth of the early Church through their boldness, spiritual strength, and wisdom. Thus they are recognized as "pillars" of the Church, having offered all even unto death for the sake of the Gospel of Christ. In the icon, the Apostle Paul, the great missionary of the early Church, is holding a Gospel book, while the Apostle Peter offers a blessing with his right hand. At the top of the icon is the is a semicircle, representing the divine realm. Rays extend in the semicircle representing the blessings and presence of God upon His two chosen heralds of the True Faith. Church Summer Hours begin June 1, Orthros 8:15 AM, 9:30 AM

Plagal Second Mode O Christ our God, upon fulfilling Your dispensation for our sake, You ascended in Glory, uniting the earthly with the heavenly. You were never separate but remained inseparable, and cried out to those who love You, "I am with you and no one is against you."... for He continues to wear the Body which He assumed, until He make me God by the power of His Incarnation; although He is no longer known after the flesh -- I mean, the passions of the flesh, the same, except sin, as ours. St. Gregory the Theologian, 4th Theological Oration, 4th Century JUNE 8 Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 John 7:37-52; 8:12 Holy Pentecost Anastasios the New Martyr of Constantinople Removal of the Relics of Theodore the Commander Melania the Righteous Theophanes the New Martyr of Constantinople Apolytikion for Holy Pentecost in the Plagal Fourth Mode Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast shown forth the fishermen as supremely wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them didst draw the world into Thy net. O Befriender of man, glory be to Thee. Plagal Fourth Mode Once, when He descended and confounded the tongues, the Most High divided the nations; and when He divided the tongues of fire, He called all men into unity; and with one accord we glorify the All-holy Spirit. For as thirsty men, when they have taken a bowl, eagerly drain it and then desist, so too they who hear the divine oracles if they receive them thirsting, will never be weary until they have drunk them up. For to show that men ought ever to thirst and hunger, "Blessed," It said, "are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness" (Matt.5:6) St. John Chrysostom, Homily 51 on John 7, 4th Century JUNE 15 St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2 Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30 Amos the Prophet Our Righteous Father Hieronymus The Sunday of All Saints Father among the Saints Jonas, Metropolitan of Kiev Augustine the Blessed, Bishop of Hippo in the Plagal Fourth Mode From on high didst Thou descend, O Compassionate One; to burial of three days hast Thou submitted that Thou mightest free us from our passions. O our Life and Resurrection, Lord, glory be to Thee. Apolytikion for The Sunday of All Saints in the Fourth Mode Adorned in the blood of Thy Martyrs throughout all the world as in purple and fine linen, Thy Church, though them, doth cry unto Thee, O Christ God: Send down Thy compassions upon Thy people; grant peace to Thy commonwealth, and great mercy to our souls. Plagal Fourth Mode As the first-fruits ouf our nature to the Planter of created things, the world presenteth the Godbearing martyred Saints in off'ring unto Thee, O Lord. Through their earnest entreaties, keep Thy Church in deep peace and divine tranquillity, through the pure Theotokos, O Thou Who art greatly merciful. For in a contest there is much labor needed--and after the contest victory falls to some, to others disgrace. Is the palm ever given or the crown granted before the course is finished?... Therefore no one can receive a reward, unless he has striven lawfully; nor is the victory a glorious one, unless the contest also has been toilsome. St. Ambrose of Milan, Chapter 15, Three Books on the Duties of the Clergy, 4th century JUNE 22 St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16 Matthew 4: nd Sunday of Matthew Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata Zenon the Martyr & his servant Zenas of Philadelphia Anastasios the Serbian Holy New Martrys Archpriest of Crete Gerasimus, Knossos Neophyte, Xepponessos Ioachim, Lampe Hierotheus, Seteia Zacharius, Kisamos Melchisadek, Piopoleos Kallinicus and Those Martyred with Them ( ) in the First Mode When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Lifegiver: Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Thy Kingdom. Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Friend of man. Second Mode O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee. Prayer, fasting, vigil and all other Christian practices, however good they may be in themselves, do not constitute the aim of our Christian life, although they serve as the indispensable means of reaching this end. The true aim of our Christian life consists in the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God. And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee. Apolytikion for Peter and Paul, the Holy Apostles in the Fourth Mode O Foremost of the Apostles and teachers of the world, intercede ye with the Master of all that He grant peace to the world and great mercy to our souls. Grave Mode You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father. He puts an end to the woman's fear... Grave Mode You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father. 10 The Cross+Roads Page 10 J UNE / JULY / AUGUST SUNDAYS (Continued from page 5) Grave Mode You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father. The principle and source of the virtues is a good disposition of the will, that is to say, an aspiration for goodness and beauty. God is the source and ground of all supernal goodness. Thus the principle of goodness and beauty is faith or, rather, it is Christ, the rock of faith, who is principle and foundation of all virtues. On this rock we stand and on this foundation we build every good thing (cf. I Cor. 3:11). St. Gregory of Sinai, On Commandments and Doctrines no. 83, Philokalia Vol. 3 edited by Palmer, Sherrard and Ware; Faber and Faber pg. 228, 14th century AUGUST 17 St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Matthew 17: th Sunday of Matthew Straton, Philip, Eutychian, & Cyprian the Martyrs of Nicomedea Afterfeast of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary Myron the Martyr of Cyzicus Floros & Lauros the Monkmartyrs of Illyria in the First Mode When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Lifegiver: Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Thy Kingdom. Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary in the First Mode In giving birth, thou didst preserve thy virginity; in thy dormition, thou didst not forsake the world, O Theotokos. Thou wast translated unto life, since thou art the Mother of Life; and by thine intercessions dost thou redeem our souls from death. Second Mode Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life. Yet if his unbelief was the cause... why does He blame the disciples? Signifying, that even without persons to bring the sick in faith, they might in many instances work a cure. St. John Chrysostom, Homily 57 on Matthew 17, 4th Century AUGUST 24 St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12 Matthew 18:23-35 Saint Cosmas of Aetolia, Equal to the Apostles The Translation of the Relics of Dionysios of Zakynthos, Bishop of Aegina Eutyches the Hieromartyr & Disciple of St. John the Theologian The Translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow 11th Sunday of Matthew in the Second Mode When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee. Fourth Mode In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life." Wherefore then did He not do this, nor forgive the debt before the account? Desiring to teach him, from how many obligations He is delivering him, that in this way at least he might become more mild towards his fellow servant... He gave more than he asked, remission and forgiveness of the entire debt. St. John Chrysostom, Homily 61 on Matthew 18, 4th Century AUGUST 31 St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:1-7 Matthew 19:16-26 Cyprian the Hieromartyr & Bishop of Carthage 12th Sunday of Matthew Gennadius Scholarus, Patriarch of Constantinople The Placing of the Honorable Sash of the Most Holy Theotokos Jesus (Joshua) of Navi in the Third Mode Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for The Placing of the Honorable Sash of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Plagal Fourth Mode O Ever-Virgin Theotokos, shelter of mankind, thou hast bestowed upon thy people a mighty investure, even thine immaculate body's raiment and sash, which by thy seedless childbirth have remained incorrupt; for in thee nature and time are made new. Wherefore, we implore thee to grant peace to the world, and great mercy to our souls. Fourth Mode With thy yoke-mate and thy sons didst thou keep vigil in the courts of Christ thy Lord and thou didst cheerfully disperse thy wealth to paupers, O blessed one. Hence, ye have all now inherited joy divine. Spiritual delight is not enjoyment found in things that exists outside the soul. St. Isaac of Syria, Unknown, 7th century
