Most physicians have our records on a computer and can quickly reference the results of last year s physical and remind us of what we were told in case we forgot. With the arrival of February 19th, we will once again get the opportunity to re-examine ourselves and do what needs to be done during Great and Holy Lenten period. The Church prescribes a diet that can benefit our spirituality: a period of fasting; extra services for our participation, and Epistle and Gospel readings which will remind us of the road of humility of which we must all travel. Rev. Alexander Schmemann, of Blessed Memory, in his classic book Great Lent: Journey to Pascha made it easy to grasp a better understanding of not only Great and Holy Lent, but the Sundays leading up to Clean O C M Monday. The book is a must read for all Orthodox Christians. We cannot walk the walk of the Lenten period without fully understanding what each step means and how we are to cross the finishing line on Holy Pascha. Our Parish of Saints Constantine and Helen will offer the following Lenten services which will give us all the opportunity to participate in the readings of the services. On Monday evenings we will gather for Compline at 6:00 p.m.; the Presanctified Liturgies will be celebrated on Wednesdays, and the Salutation Services on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. Also, the three Saturday of Souls will be celebrated on February 10th, 17th, and 24th; in which we are all encouraged to submit the names of the deceased for commemoration. Let us not miss all these opportunities for worship so that as an Orthodox Community we can grow together spiritually rejoicing in the rich Liturgical tradition of our Church. Orthodox Christian Missionaries Thomas and Elizabeth Manuel visited our Parish on January 28, participating in the Divine Liturgy and discussing during the coffee hour their upcoming mission to Guatemala in the Summer of Thomas is the son of Father John Manuel of Saint Nicholas Church in Virginia Beach and Elizabeth is a native of Norfolk and member of the Annunciation Cathedral. Thomas and Elizabeth will serve as teachers and witnesses to the Mayan people, encouraging and modeling life of faithful Orthodox while assisting in the development of the mission in Guatemala. They have been drawn to serve in Guatemala based on past experiences in the country and are overjoyed to have the opportunity to return to serve. Your prayers of support and financial support are appreciated. Please visit the Orthodox Christian Mission Center at for more information.

CALL FOR ALTAR BOYS: Young Men Needed to Serve As Altar Boys We are always looking for reliable and faithful young men, between the ages of 8 and 18, to join our dedicated team of acolytes and serve their Church as Altar Boys. Our community is fortunate to have a dedicated group of young men currently serving as Altar Boys. Our acolytes are organized into three teams who serve once every three weeks (around 17 times throughout the year). A separate schedule is published for Holy Week and most Altar Boys serve during two services that week. When serving during a particular week, we ask that the boys arrive promptly a few minutes before the start of the Liturgy (roughly 9:50 to 10:00). If your son is nervous about serving, no worries, there are plenty of skilled and seasoned members of the team who will introduce him to the responsibilities and help bring him along. The schedule and team assignments for this Ecclesiastical Year started this past September, but it is not too late to join. I would like to add your son as a new Altar Boy starting shortly after the first of the year. If your son is interested, I d like to invite you to attend an information session on February 18th, immediately following Sunday School, in one of the upstairs classrooms. Or you can talk to me at church, send me an at brhendricks@cox.net, or call In closing, service as an Altar Boy in the liturgical celebrations of our Church remains one of prominence and distinction. It is considered the foundation and development of a young man s stewardship to the Church; a service that is offered to God as a regular offering of talent and ability, and is an experience which every young man will cherish for the rest of his life. I pray your son will join our team. After mid-feb, rentals are booked through June Barbara discussed the status of our industrial mixer. Our current mixer had been repaired by Jack Georgalas team at TriCities and was working a few weeks leading up to the fall festival. It was returned to TriCities last week for further repair and unit s age and unavailability of parts we don t know when it will be returned or if it can even be repaired. Immediate problem facing us is that the Ladies Philoptochos will be preparing and baking Vasilopita in the next two weeks and need a mixer to mix the dough. Barbara has checked various rental vendors and they don t have industrial mixers for rent. She has also checked with Costa Theodorogiannis and he has a lead on one we might be able to borrow, problem is it is in Winston Salem. Barbara is checking with Restaurant Depot to see if they have any leads on mixers. A new 60 qt. industrial mixer runs between $12K to $16K. Barbara agreed to work all sources, to include some leads Dick Moylan has. Nick Matthews will investigate leads with some contacts he has.. With the Thanksgiving Holiday this week, time is of the essence and we will need to make a decision soon. Woodbury (Continued from page 10) for 5 windows, drip cap, seals and re -caulk 7 other windows $6,225. Power washing option $1,955 Howard Mandeville is seeking preliminary proposals for replacing the Church s HVAC system, to include the four units and air handlers. In addition, he is getting estimates for both heat pump units and natural gas units. Regarding the natural gas option, Virginia Power has surveyed our site and will run the gas lines at no charge. To move forward with the natural gas option, Virginia Natural Gas, VNG, would require an irrevocable letter of credit from our bank in the amount of $1,800 at contract signing. Suspect the premium/origination on this would by approximately 2%. Barry asked that it be clarified that we are not looking at making an immediate decision and that a new parish council will need to decide how to proceed. We are simply taking prudent measures and getting estimates to help expedite the process next year. Cracks in brick walls around the library to be repointed. Foyer HVAC unit have reached end of life. Replacements to install new unit is scheduled for December 14, Zena asked that we check the dishwasher for leaks. IX: Adjournment: Fr. George offered the closing prayer at Next PC meeting will be determined by the new Parish Council in January X: Certification: Respectfully Submitted Robert V Demson, Secretary February 2018 Page 11 Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Friday Presentation of our Lord 9:00 am Orthros / 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 3 Saturday OCF Retreat in Williamsburg 4 Sunday Sunday of the Prodigal Son 8:45 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy Memorials 1 Year for Ioannis Siokis 8 Year for Anastasis Zambas 12 Year for Sophia Zambas 12 Year for Mabel Nicholls 24 Year for John Calvin Nicholls 6:30 pm Ahepa Super Bowl Party 5 Monday 6:30pm Philoptochos 6 Tuesday 5:00 pm/8:00 pm Greek School 8 Wednesday 7:15 pm Choir 10 Saturday First Saturday of Souls Saint Haralambos 9:00 am Orthros / 10:00am Divine Liturgy 1:00 pm Baptism 11 Sunday Judgment Sunday Friendship Sunday 8:45 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 13 Tuesday 5:00pm/8:00pm Greek School 14 Wednesday 6:00 pm Paraclesis 7:00 pm Adult Education 7:15 pm Choir 17 Saturday Second Saturday of Souls Saint Theodore the Tyro 9:00 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 18 Sunday Forgiveness Sunday (Cheesefare) 8:45 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 8-Year Trisagion for Dr. Platon Gailey 12:00 HWPS Meeting 19 Monday Great Lent Begins 6:00 pm Compline 7:00 pm Parish Council 20 Tuesday 5:00 pm/8:00 pm Greek School 21 Wednesday 10:00 am Presanctified Liturgy 7:00 pm Adult Education 7:15 pm Choir 22 Thursday 6:45 pm Ahepa/DOP 23 Friday 7:00 pm First Salutations 24 Saturday Third Saturday of Souls 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 25 Sunday Sunday of Orthodoxy Spring General Assembly 8:45 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy 6:00 pm Pan Orthodox Vespers (at Dormition in Norfolk) 26 Monday 6:00 pm Compline 27 Tuesday 5:00 pm/8:00 pm Greek School 28 Wednesday 10:00 am Presanctified Liturgy 7:00 pm Adult Education
