This clearly describes Great and Holy Lent for all Orthodox Christians. This journey begins with our own self-examination, a period of time of which we all need to take a good hard look at ourselves and not be so quick in judging others. The destination that we are seeking is our celebrating the Lord s victory over death. The services of Great and Holy Lent afford all of us the necessary settings in participating in the selected readings of the Church. How wonderful it is to see and hear our faithful participating in the readings of these services. How uplifting it is when we are all reading the prayer of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, the prayer that serves as our check list for our individual Lenten efforts, which helps us stray away from spiritual diseases which have shaped our lives. The words of this prayer help us understand how Christ restores wholeness in us and helps lead us back to Him of whom we have strayed away from. The Lenten journey gives us all a great deal of time, a period of time of which we cannot waste. It is bad enough that we waste time throughout the year, but during Great and Holy Lent we must seize the opportunity in bettering ourselves as a Community of Christ. The first quarter of 2013 has come and gone, have we looked at our progress as Orthodox Christians, or have we spent too much time judging others? Let us all prepare to enter in Communion with Him who will suffer on the Cross for our redemption. S UNDAY OF ORTHODOXY AND GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY Our Parish, Sunday School, Greek School and Hellenic Youth Dancers celebrated the Sunday of Orthodoxy and Greek Independence Day on Sunday, March 24.

APRIL 7 EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 GOSPEL READING Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 Sunday of the Holy Cross The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny P ARISH MINISTRIES & ORGANIZATIONS Philoptochos Dottie Andre, President Religious Education Aleksandra Garofalis, Administrative Director Frances Tsimplekis, Artistic Director Greek School Matina Mimikos, Paula Tofalli, Maria Pentakos Youth Ministry Christina Thames, Director Acolytes Barry Hendricks, Director JOY/HOPE Helen Micha, Director Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA) Sydney Galoozis, President himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Sunday of the Holy Cross With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast. He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries during the Great Fast. Copyright Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Brookline, MA, used by permission. WISDOM FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS Seest thou how He now proceeds to lay beforehand in them the foundation of His doctrine about fasting?... See, at any rate, how many blessings spring from them both. For he that is praying as he ought, and fasting, hath not many wants, and he that hath not many wants, cannot be covetous;... St. John Chrysostom, Homily 57 on Matthew 17,4,5. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness fortyseven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed. Apolytikion for Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt The image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Mother. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. 4 The Cross+Roads Page 4 A PRIL SAINTS CONSTANTINE AND HELEN (Continued from page 3) thou wouldest learn their virtue, notice them after these things, and thou wilt see them superior to every passion. St. John Chrysostom, Homily 65 on Matthew 20, 2,3,4,6. B#54, pp ,403., 4th Century APRIL 28 EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians 4:4-9 GOSPEL READING John 12:1-18 SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Palm Sunday On Sunday, five days before the Passover of the Law, the Lord came from Bethany to Jerusalem. Sending two of His disciples to bring Him a foal of an ass, He sat thereon and entered into the city. When the multitude there heard that Jesus was coming, they straightway took up the branches of palm trees in their hands, and went forth to meet Him. Others spread their garments on the ground, and yet others cut branches from the trees and strewed them in the way that Jesus was to pass; and all of them together, especially the children, went before and after Him, crying out: "Hosanna: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel" (John 12:13). This is the radiant and glorious festival of our Lord's entry into Jerusalem that we celebrate today.the branches of the palm trees symbolize Christ's victory over the devil and death. The word Hosanna means "Save, I pray," or "Save, now." The foal of an ass, and Jesus' sitting thereon, and the fact that this animal was untamed and considered unclean according to the Law, signified the former uncleanness and wildness of the nations, and their subjection thereafter to the holy Law of the Gospel. 9 The Cross+Roads Page SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL Our parish was privileged to hear the amazing Oratorical speeches of five young people on Sunday, March 10th (pictured below). We will be publishing their speeches in the next few months so that everyone can benefit from the fruits of their labors. Our parish of Sts. Constantine & Helen is hosting the next level of competition (district: state of Virginia) on Saturday, April 20th beginning at 10am. Everyone is invited to attend and hear the speeches prepared by young people from throughout the state. A light Lenten lunch will be served. If you can help on this day, please contact Christina Thames. From left to right (back row): Hayden Hendricks, Dimitri Konstantinou, Christian Detweiler. (front row:) Anna Paisley Gray, Alexandra Swanenburg. Sts. Constantine & Helen by Alexandra Swanenburg, 4th Grade I am going to tell you the story of Sts. Constantine and Helen. I chose Sts. Constantine and Helen because my church s name is Sts. Constantine and Helen. Also, my grandmother s saint is St. Constantine. My mother s saint is St. Helen. St. Helen was mother to St. Constantine, future sole ruler of the Roman Empire. St. Constantine showed great respect and honor to his mother. When St. Constantine became emperor, he named his mother, Augusta. St. Constantine next became sole ruler of the Western Roman Empire. He issued the Edict of Milan saying Christians can practice their religion freely. He expanded the issue to the entire Roman Empire when he became sole ruler of that, too. Christians could now be Christians in peace! St. Constantine loved the Sign of the Cross and wanted to find Jesus cross. He sent St. Helen to find it. Even though she was getting older, she was excited to do her task. A Hebrew told her where it was and she found it. She gave the cross to the Patriarch. St. Constantine did many good deeds in Jerusalem. She founded over 80 churches, and she found Christ s tomb. Christ s tomb was later put in one of the churches that she founded. I like how St. Constantine let Christians worship freely. I also like how St. Helen found the cross. It was cool that she founded so many churches. I am very glad I learned about Sts. Constantine and Helen. They are very interesting saints that I would like to learn more about. I am glad that I was named after St. Helen, like my mom. When my grandmother hears this story, she ll be glad that she was named after St. Constantine, too. Sts. Constantine and Helen are important saints with an interesting story. I am really glad I learned about them. Light in the Orthodox Church by Anna Paisley Gray, 5th Grade In just a few weeks, standing here at midnight, the priest will walk out of the altar in darkness, holding a candle. He will say, Come, Receive the light. But the priest means more than just, Light your candle! Light is mentioned many times in the Bible. Light was the very first thing that God created. God said, Let there be light, and suddenly light appeared out of the heavy darkness that had been there. I got a telescope for Christmas, and recently I have been looking through it at stars, constellations, and planets, specifically Jupiter. They are super bright, and shine up in the dark night. It gives me a sense of wonder and an appreciation for God s creation of Light. You can see signs of light everywhere. In the icons around us here, Light shines in Saints halos, representing their holiness. Light in the halos represents the presence of the Holy Spirit in these holy people. An example of Light in the Gospels occurs during Christ s Transfiguration. In the Transfiguration, Jesus and his disciples were hiking up a mountain. When they got to the top, Jesus shone a very bright white. It was so dazzling white that they fell on their faces so they would not be blinded. Then the disciples that were with Jesus did not only know that Jesus was God, but they understood and experienced it. Another example of Light and holiness is told of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. He was born in 1759 in Russia, and was a very good Orthodox monk. Many people came to ask him questions and seek advice. One day a man went to Father Seraphim s camp. The man did not understand how he could know when he was in the presence of the Holy Spirit. They talked for hours with St. Seraphim explaining, and the man trying to understand, and when St. Seraphim could explain no more, Saint Seraphim s face miraculously shined as brightly as the sun, and his eyes flashed lightning strikes. The man described later: Imagine in the center of the sun, in the dazzling light of midday the face of a man talking to you. You see the movement of his lips and only a blinding light spreading far around for several yards and illuminating the snow blanket which covered the forest glade and snowflakes which sprinkled me and the great Elder. He described feeling calmness, peace, joy, warmth, and a sweet fragrance. And THEN the man knew that he was in the presence of the Holy Spirit. He had experience it right then and now he understood. In the Orthodox Church, light represents holiness and divinity, although we will not see the Holy Transfiguration or Saint Seraphim, we are still called to Receive the Light. How can we receive the Light that God shines? By trying to be holy. By acquiring the Holy Spirit through Baptism, and by prayer, and fasting. We can be nice. We should be kind to other people in the church or anywhere that we go. We should also share the light which means to be kind and give to people in need. In the Resurrection service when the priests shares the candlelight, his light never gets dimmer. In the same way, when we share kindness, charity, joy, and spiritual light with other people, our light will not diminish either. In fact, our own light becomes even brighter!
