HOMILY NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, (All bow while saying:) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Thursday, February 11 th, 9:00 in Kattar Hall, HFA Thank you for all your support at the Academic Fair, Book Fair, and Open House. The research, writing, designing and oral presentation involved with each class's theme were impressive and we should be proud of our students for their excellent work and spirit. Thank you also to their teachers and you parents; behind every great endeavor there are behind-the-scenes people making it all possible. We're excited about the Open House results and the way that our school community was able to share the fruits of our labor with our parish community and families interested in the school. We are well on the way to recruiting enough new families to reach our enrollment goals for next year. A big thank you to Emily Lux and her team of Book Fairers. Great work and we'll let you know how many free books we earned. Finally, as we head into Catholic Schools week, by the time this bulletin is printed we will have had several neat celebrations. Saturday's first ever Sock Hop should be a great opportunity for fellowship and fun. We have the roller skating extravaganza Wednesday as well as the spelling bee and a special talk from Brother Bonaventure OP, a friend of Patrick and Kendra Conley who is scheduled to be ordained as a transitional deacon in March for the Eastern Province of the Benedictines. Brother Bonaventure has had years of experience working with and teaching children. He will be speaking about Thomistic virtue ethics: apparent versus real good, sin, and deception. Lest you think that might be a little too weighty, he is planning on illustrating these concepts using Spike, our bearded dragon pet from Mrs. Conley's room. LENT ASH WEDNESDAY Masses at 8am (with school) and 7pm (with choir). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all those ages (one full meal and two smaller snacks not to equal a meal). Abstinence from all meat products is binding on those age 14 and up. TUESDAYS 7pm "Spiritual Temperaments" presented by John Hartnett (Moorman Hall). Getting to know your spiritual temperament helps you understand what makes us tick spiritually. This series helps to point out our comparative gifts and shortcomings, so that we don t become prideful regarding God s gifts to us or despair over our limitations. It also paves the way for us to see how the effects of original sin impact us and those around us so that we can better understand how to grow in merciful love in our relationships with God and neighbor. FRIDAYS 5pm Fish Fry (Moorman Hall) 7pm Stations of the Cross with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament (Church) 7:45pm Lecture series on "Saints of Mercy by various presenters (Church) The saints show us the Gospel in action. They also remind us that by baptism we are all called to become saints! The Church has a great variety of saints which demonstrates that holiness is tailored to our individual situations. This series shows us how beautiful it is to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. LENTEN FISH FRY The Knights of Columbus will once again be serving a Lenten Fish Fry every Friday of Lent (February 12 th to March 18 th ) between 5:00PM and 7:00PM. 6 CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL Our parish is now conducting the 2016 Catholic Services Appeal for the 17 Collective Ministries of the Archdiocese that no one parish can support on its own. Please be generous! In 2015, the Appeal did not reach its goal and some Ministries were not fully funded, including the Archdiocesan Hospital Chaplains, Catholic Grade Schools, Catholic Charities and the Venezuelan Mission. The Designated Ministries for this year are: 1. American Indian Ministry 2. Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) 3. Campus Ministry Newman Center 4. Campus Ministry Saint Paul s Outreach 5. Catholic Charities 6. Deaf Ministry 7. Catholic Elementary Schools 8. Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis 9. Catholic High Schools 10. Hospital Chaplains of the Archdiocese 11. Archdiocesan Offices of Latino Ministry 12. Marriage, Family and Life Office of the Archdiocese 13. Parishes 14. Archdiocesan Prison Chaplains 15. Saint John Vianney College Seminary 16. The Saint Paul Seminary 17. Venezuelan Mission of the Archdiocese Please remember that parishes are a benefitted ministry; we receive 25% of the dollars we collect in our parish if we reach our parish goal. Visit to read and see more about the ministries benefitted by the 2016 Appeal. This is the Year of Mercy. We should remember that Jesus taught us the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. These Works of Mercy are precisely what the 17 Collective Ministries of the Archdiocese accomplish. Thank you for your generosity! A Message from Archbishop Bernard Hebda The 2016 Catholic Services Appeal will begin at the end of January. As the interim Shepherd of the Archdiocese, I strongly encourage you to participate in the Appeal. I wholeheartedly support the Appeal and will make my personal pledge to it. Last year the Appeal fell short of its goal and the collective ministries of the Archdiocese, like Catholic Charities and Catholic grade schools, were underfunded. I am calling on you to join me in doing our part so that those important ministries of the Archdiocese outreach and programs that go beyond what any one parish could organize and support on its own can be fully funded. The sick, the imprisoned, the student in need, those in the missions, the seminarians, the poor, the homeless, and the hungry are all counting on us. Mindful in this Year of Mercy of the many blessings that we have received, let us commit to being instruments of our God s tenderness and mercy in the lives of our brothers and sisters in need. Please be assured in advance of my gratitude for your participation in the Catholic Services Appeal as well as a remembrance in my daily prayers. 6 Thank you and God bless! Pope Francis says that the disposal of human embryos and the treatment often given to the elderly and the infirm are marks of the throwaway culture in our society. The Pope said this today when he received in audience members of Italy s national bioethics committee. The Holy Father noted how the committee has many times addressed respect for the integrity of the human being and the protection of health from conception to natural death, considering the person in his singularity, always as an end and never simply as a means. This ethical principle is also fundamental in regard to the biotechnological applications in the medical field, which can never be used in a way that is harmful to human dignity, and even less be guided by industrial and commercial ends alone, he added. Full text: -committee-for-bioethics/ BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS If you have a parish-related or archdiocesan event or announcement you d like included in the Holy Family weekend bulletin, please submit the item to andrew@hfcmn.org at least two weeks in advance. Thank you!

7 INTRODUCING FLOCKNOTE COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE Though we haven t yet hired a part-time communications coordinator, we have everything in place to start our new communications system. Our plan is that eventually the coordinator will be responsible for a weekly newsletter. In the meantime, we don t want to delay our various groups being able to send messages to their particular members. We envision one general for everyone per week. Each group you join may also send a weekly message. Only those who sign up for the Prayer Partners group might possibly receive a message each day because of the timeliness of the requests. All other groups are instructed to keep messages to the minimum to not flood your inbox! Here s how to join: 1. Visit -or- Text HFCMN to Fill in your information and join whichever groups pertain to you. Please be sure to join the group representing your region to keep up with special activities with fellow parishioners in your area. This is especially urgent if you want to be included in the Lenten activities which will start in just a few weeks! A few hints: Be sure to verify your address and cell phone number: after you sign up you should normally receive a message back asking for verification. Click through and follow instructions to verify. By joining any particular sub-group, you automatically become a member of the overall group (e.g. joining Lectors also makes you a member of the Liturgy group) Check under Notifications (purple bell on menu) to manage how each group you join connects with you (text and/or ). YEAR OF MERCY: CURRENT REGIONAL OFFERINGS Thank you to all who attended the Regional Get-Togethers these past two Sundays! What a wonderful way to meet fellow parishioners in our neighborhoods, and to discuss ways that we can support one another in our mission as disciples of Jesus Christ. If you haven't already done so, check the map on our bulletin boards to see what Region you are in. Several opportunities for local faith study groups have already been formed due to these meetings. To view and sign up for these studies or events in your region, visit flocknote.com/hfc. If you do not have access to this, you may contact the host directly. Other regional opportunities are being finalized and details will be listed as soon as they are available. You may also have a different idea for a faith study or Corporal work of Mercy. We encourage you to gather with fellow parishioners in your neighborhood to create something that fits your needs. If you need ideas, you will find great resources through our new parish subscription to the Formed.org website, where you simply follow the sign-up procedure using the parish code: 2QCG4F. If you do organize a new event, please call the parish office so it can be listed on Flocknote and put in the bulletin, so other parishioners may join you.
