2 THOSE WHO SERVE US & THE LORD Presbytera Kathy Gialourakos Pappas was bor n and r aised in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Her family has always been active par ishioners at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Upon graduation in 1985 from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, Kathy moved to St. Paul where she accepted a position at St. Catherine University. She began as a special events coordinator, scheduling campus facilities, catering and food service to campus and outside groups. Over the next twelve years, she was promoted to scheduling office manager, conference coordinator and developed a theme day program for the residential students. Kathy began attending St. George Greek Orthodox Church and was thrilled to see a blossoming young adult program. At her first YAL bible study, she met young adults that would eventually become her koumbari and life long friends. A strong bond among these young adults developed into a cohesive group that, in 1997, combining with St. Mary s Greek Orthodox Church young adults, hosted the 15 th Annual Archdiocesan YAL National Conference. Kathy was co-chair. These young adults attended many other YAL national conferences together over the years, and as single people, an eye was always open for that possible life mate. On a warm summer evening in 1994, Kathy spotted him at an outing at Navy Pier in Chicago! A Holy Cross seminarian, home for summer break. In 2000, Kathy married George P. Pappas in Fond du Lac, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he was working as youth director at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. In 2002, their first child Pericles Perry was born. Soon after, George accepted a position at Assumption Greek Orthodox church as youth director and they happily moved back to the Chicago area. In 2004 following George s ordination to the Holy Priesthood, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, were they served Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for 9 years. Kathy s special events background came in handy and over the years in Sioux City she helped to enhance their existing programs and create new ones. In 2013, Fr. George was transferred to Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Merrillville, Indiana, and the family gladly made the move closer to family and friends. They currently reside in Crown Point, Indiana. How Rich Are You? THE GLOBAL RICH LIST This possible tidbit of bulletin fodder may serve a useful purpose in helping parishioners to gain a more truthful perspective on their wealth position. In the West we are challenged every day to compare ourselves with the very wealthy, privileged and successful celebrities that crowd our media devices. Typically, this results in comparing our "inside" with their "outside" and then often feeling deprived or impoverished. There's another and far more interesting way to measure one's wealth. Go to and put in your net annual income. Then see where you stand in relationship to the other 7.3 billion humans on the planet. If you put in $50,000, for example, you discover that you're not only a one-percenter, you are a 1/3rd of a one-percenter! Encourage parishioners to continue to scroll down the screen after they discover that they are actually filthy rich, dripping with great wealth compared to everyone else in the world. This, of course, does not count all the other blessings of living in the West - education, health care, clean water, stable government, rule of law, peaceful country, housing, investments, IRAs, 401Ks, economic opportunity, etc. This is one reason why we do not give generously - we feel poor in relation to celebrities or neighbors and relatives doing better than we are. The second reason is that we spend, acquire and lavish upon ourselves such an endless array of niceties that we are up to our eyeballs in debt or just getting by on our income so there is very little remaining to give to charity - including our parish! Please remember this: complaint is poverty but gratitude is abundance. About the Editor Anthony Scott's description of service within the holy Orthodox Church may be read here. In 2012 he requested to be returned to the ranks of the laity in order to receive the sacrament of holy matrimony. He lives in northern California and worships at St. Seraphim Orthodox Church. 6 New Acolytes: Congratulations to Mark Simon and Billy Paraschou, who received the blessing from Metropolitan Iakovos to begin wearing their robe and sash in the service of the holy altar. Way to go! Message from Youth Director: To our Beloved Community, I have been in the Youth Minister role for 11 months now and I feel very blessed by the warm reception I've had by the members of St. George GOC. Last month, I was welcomed to join you all for the 75th anniversary banquet celebrating your church's history. Thank you for allowing me to become a part of that. I am SO excited about the direction our youth program is taking this year. Since implementing our JOY/GOYA Youth Nights, we have built up a wonderful turnout over the months. Let's keep it up! Our themes for these past months have been tools we use in the church. In October, you may remember that we learned all about the censor. This past November, we've been talking about the meaning of icons in our church and their very important role in our faith. Last month, we have also released our new Youth Newsletter that we hope will be sent out regularly, written by the kids themselves. I have received many positive reviews and love that the kids are writing about what is interesting about them. If your child, or a child you know would like to contribute to the monthly Youth Newsletter, please contact me ASAP and I will get them connected for the next issue. Back in September, I had announced that St. George Youth were becoming involved in many ways throughout the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. I am so proud of the amount of effort your kids have been making to try new things, be it ushering, reading the Epistle, singing in the choir, or serving behind the Altar. I am delighted and proud, and I hope you are too. I firmly believe that the best way to learn about our faith is to actively participate in it and get involved in as much as you can. A special thank you must go out to all of you parents for taking the extra effort out of your time to support your child and the youth program. These activities would not be possible without your effort to get your kids to church and ready. Just as well, our youth events would not be possible without the dedication of our adults and children. Thank you for all you do in your very busy lives. In Christ, Nathaniel Kostick p.s. We're always in need of volunteers and chaperones. 13 ST. GEORGE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 1111 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN, Tel.: (651) Fax: (651) Web: Roselawn Cemetery Program 2015 End of Year Update With 2015 coming to a close, the Roselawn Cemetery Committee would like to remind everyone of the Roselawn Cemetery Program and its benefits to parishioners and church alike. With lot prices historically increasing every year, we anticipate prices going up again in Brief Program Background The Roselawn Cemetery Program began in 2004 when the church invested in several grave lots in the area where many Greeks were previously buried. The intent was to expand this area within Roselawn and officially sanction it as the St. George Greek Orthodox Section. This step allowed parishioners past, current and future, to purchase grave lots near family members, demonstrate their pride of heritage and provide easy and centralized access to visit passed family members. In 2013 a generous donation of 52 additional lots were added to the St. George Section allowing more parishioners access and funds to benefit the church. In 2014 a monument was built creating a focal point for further demonstrating the commitment, pride and a long-term legacy for parishioners. Benefits to Parishioners Parishioners cite many different reasons for taking part in this program: Saving money vs. purchasing directly from Roselawn Easing the planning process vs. waiting for the difficult time when a relative passes Identifying and selecting a preferred lot location Identifying and selecting a group of lots for the entire family to rest together Supporting the church financially Benefits to the Church Each and every dollar paid for a lot directly benefits St. George. Funds from purchased lots are used for capital improvements and to support our parish in many positive ways End of Year Campaign Starting November 1, 2015 through the end of the year, all monies from purchased lots will specifically support the Iconography Program. Currently, this project is not yet fully funded. By purchasing cemetery lots now, you will save money before pricing likely increases next year, you ll select a preferred lot for you and/or loved ones and directly support the iconography program that has a significant and positive impact on our church Pricing Monument Lot (2 graves) $5,440 Marker (Flat) Lot (2 graves) $3,060 Individual Grave (1 grave) limited availability $1,700 Contact or visit the church office, where a map of available lots can be viewed. Once you ve identified which lot(s) you d like to purchase, the church administrator or a member of the Roselawn committee will work with you on the necessary paperwork. We hope all parishioners consider taking advantage of this program for the benefit of your family and church.

15 PRESS RELEASE November 9, St. Nektarios of Aegina the Wonderworker SUBJECT: 75 th Anniversary of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota On October 24-25, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota celebrated their 75 th anniversary. A jubilee banquet was held on Saturday evening October 24 th with 280 people in attendance. Honored guests and speakers included Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago (Hierarch of the Metropolis), United States Senator Amy Klobuchar, Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul, Deacon Chris Avramopoulos (Metropolis Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries), Fr. John Angelis (who served the parish ), priests and presvyteras who grew up at St. George including Fr. George Dokos (St. Mary GOC, Minneapolis, MN), Fr. Micah Hirschy (Holy Trinity GOC, Birmingham, AL), Presvytera Diana Lamberis (Niles, IL), and Presvytera Kathy Pappas (Merrilville, IN). The program was emceed by Mrs. Rena Sarigianopoulos, reporter and anchor for local NBC affiliate KARE11. The evening included a continuous slideshow of hundreds of photos from the parish s rich history. The 75 th Anniversary video premiered, and it included several key photos of important events and persons from each of the seven and a half decades of the parish s existence. The video was tracked with Byzantine hymns and period popular music, along with a voice-over script. The video was produced and narrated by Mr. Soule Paraschou, eldest son of former parish priest, +Fr. Paraskevas Parry Paraschou. After several moving speeches, Metropolitan Iakovos offered his pastoral words to those in attendance and offered a closing benediction. Photos with several groups were followed by Greek dancing to the music of local band, The Levendes. On Sunday October 25 th, Metropolitan Iakovos celebrated hierarchical Orthros and Liturgy with proistamenos Fr. Richard Demetrius Andrews, Fr. John Angelis, Fr. George Dokos, Fr. Micah Hirschy, Fr. George Pappas, Fr. George Lamberis and Deacon Chris Avramopoulos. A memorial and artoklasia service followed before parishioners and guests made their way into the social hall for a delicious luncheon and fellowship. St. George Greek Orthodox Church began in Saint Paul with its first liturgy on Palm Sunday The immigrant community purchased a mansion on historic Summit Avenue and converted it into a house of worship. Four priests served the parish until 1966: Fr. Constantine Capoyianis, Fr. Constantine Souliopoulos, Fr. Joseph Vasiliou and Fr. Gerasimos Rassias. Archbishop Athenagoras (who later became Ecumenical Patriarch) visited the community in 1936 and Archbishop Michael consecrated the church in In 1967, soon after Fr. John Angelis arrived, the church was damaged by fire beyond repair. A neo- Byzantine style church was built and opened in Right after Fr. Parry Paraschou was assigned, Archbishop Iakovos consecrated the church in Fr. Parry retired in 1999 and Fr. Richard Andrews was assigned. Since then the whole facility has been renovated including the sanctuary. The land next door to the church was also acquired and developed. Metropolitan Iakovos has served the Metropolis of Chicago since 1979 and has visited the St. George parish numerous times, including its 50th Anniversary celebration in To view 75 th Anniversary video and videos of the Jubilee program, go to: For photos from the 75 th Jubilee program and liturgy, go to:
