It is difficult to believe that November is nearly upon us and the end of the year is approaching fast. On 15 th of this month we begin the Advent Fast, a forty-day preparation for the Nativity of our Lord. Now is the time to begin planning how we will spend that time. Fasting from all meat and dairy products is prescribed as well as personal reflection, moral self-inventory, repentance and confession. Additional communal worship is also necessary. These ascetical efforts are the cornerstone of living our faith in Christ Jesus. The month of November also brings other events in the life of our parish and Orthodoxy in the Twin Cities including Patriarchate Sunday on Nov. 3 rd ; the Family Camp on Nov ; the Philoptochos Bake Sale on Nov ; Thanksgiving Eve Liturgy on Nov. 27; and Thanksgiving Holiday on Nov Parish council candidate nominations are due on Nov. 17 th and Elections will take place on December 15 th. Nomination forms with basic qualifications for candidates were mailed with the third quarter financial giving statements. Our Fall Parish Assembly will be held on December 8 th. The Archdiocese Family Ministry Conference took place her in the Twin Cities on September The participants were able to benefit from nationally renowned youth minister Jim Burns as well as several prominent speakers including Archbishop Demetrios, Fr. Harry Pappas and Fr. Anthony Coniaris. Break-out sessions were led by numerous other speakers. Our parish was well represented by a handful of participants including myself, Tom Lampros, Lani Hattling and Ann Drivas. I have asked them to share a bit of their experience in this month s newsletter. With the help of several parents we will have our next Family Night at St. George on Saturday November 2 nd. Please join us! Metropolis Clergy Laity took place in Sioux City, Iowa on October 2-5 and I m very pleased that we had full representation for our parish. Beside myself, parish council president Tom Lampros, vice president Alexis Bighley, Steve Arsenault and Minda Arsenault (Philoptochos delegate) all participated. I also asked them to share a bit of their experience. The speakers and workshops were excellent and the fellowship was very enjoyable. Youth Minister Update: the position is currently open. If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to me. The position is salaried at $1000 per month working approximately hours per week and primarily serves kids ages 3 to 18. Administrative Assistant Update: Miss Emmy Mashke has been working temporarily in the position for the last six months. We are restarting our search for a permanent placement in that position. If interested please submit your cover letter and resume to me asap. The position is thirty hours per week with two weeks paid vacation and six paid federal holidays. Wage is approximately $12-15 per hour depending on qualifications. The recent Parish Survey Results were mailed with last month s newsletter. I hope everyone feels better that they had an opportunity to voice their opinion. I would like to ad- (Continued on page 2)

2 (Continued from page 1) dress a few issues that were raised in the publication of some opinions. Regarding the length of service, I will endeavor to start the liturgy on time and keep the adult and children sermons to a reasonable length. That is the best that can be done unless the community wants to go to an all-english format, but that will only save about 5-7 minutes. I will not cut out parts of the liturgy. Another option is to engage an additional priest and/or deacon to assist with the liturgy but there likely will be some cost to the parish for their service. The more fundamental issue here is the mindset we bring to worship. If we bring a clock-watching, let s get it over with mentality, the liturgy will always be too long. The Cherubic Hymn before the Great Entrance says, let us lay aside all the cares of this life. That should be our rubric as we approach the Throne of God in humility and reverence for the sacred Presence of the Holy Lord. Secondly, regarding the content of the sermons, I confess one of the most difficult aspects of drafting a homily is selecting a topic. I have said repeatedly over the years to please submit topics and ideas as suggestions for sermons. I will try to integrate and use those ideas with what I believe the Lord is calling me to preach about to our flock of Christians. It always amazes me that one person can compliment a sermon while another can criticize the exact same sermon. Thus, just like worship, our perception of the homily is most affected by the disposition of our heart. If we are truly seeking God s guidance, we will find it even in the most poorly crafted sermons. If God can speak through Barlaam s donkey (Numbers 22:25-35), He surely can speak through me. Thirdly, regarding parish leadership, several of the responses offered in the summary were erroneous, inflammatory, and false. The twisting of words is unfortunate and misleading. People may perceive me as dogmatic but the fact of the matter is that one of the foundational pillars of our Church is dogma which are central, inalienable beliefs that guide the life of Christians. I try to hold to these standards as much as possible. However, anyone who has worked closely with me knows that I try to be accommodating where pastorally appropriate. Although it does allow for certain democratic decision making processes, the fact of the matter is that the Church is not a democracy. We are a hierarchical Body Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone upon which the Apostles and Saints have built upon. The word hierarchy literally means holy source. Practically speaking, all functional organizations must have a leader. Even the Holy Trinity has a leader God the Father from Whom the Son is only-begotten and the Spirit proceeds. When we become members of Christ s Body, we submit ourselves to His reign. The attitude of rebellion is incompatible with the life in Christ. The several opinions expressed regarding the priest s relationship with the parish council show an utter lack of knowledge of the Greek Orthodox Church Tradition. The Regulations of the Archdiocese clearly state that the Priest, under the guidance of the local bishop, is the head of the local parish. The priest and the parish council share the responsibility of leading the parish community. There is no division of duty where the parish council is in charge of the business and the priest stays out of it. The fact of the matter is that the priest and the parish council are responsible together for the administrative affairs and the worship/sacramental/ministerial life of the community. The Regulations specifically state the primary duties of parishioners and parish council members are religious and moral, not professional. Practically speaking, the fact that this part of the survey results were shared with the community is proof that the council is not a sales voice for me because I advised against it. There are many instances where the parish council has not taken my advice or guidance. If I was wrong and they were right, then glory be to God. Again, it is the mindset that is concerning here. If one thinks of parish leadership like we think of American politics, then we are to be most pitied of all people. The council is not a legislative body meant to represent a constituency nor is it meant to provide a check and balance against an administration or judiciary. The council is akin to the apostles and disciples who were called, not by a group of people, but by the Lord Himself. They are called to learn and to serve, and then to lead the people into God s kingdom. This can only be done if the council works in cooperation with the priest who has been called to be their leader, not their employee. If the council is competing with the priest for control then no one is served except the devil and the demons. I apologize if my words sound harsh but I feel very strongly about understanding what the truth of the matter is and setting the record straight. I am here to serve God first and then you, His people, second. However, I can only serve you if you want to be served, if you are open to the working of the Holy Spirit through me. Sometimes, I obstruct the Spirit but most of the time I try, as best as I can, to be an instrument/vessel of God s love. Let s work together for God s glory so that we lead all people to the knowledge of the Truth in this life and eternal life in the world to come. Amen! In Christ, +Fr. Rick page 2

Youth Minister Update Ms. Lydia Lekka s religious-worker visa was approved by the Immigration and Customs Service (USICS) in mid-july. Sadly, however, the visa was rejected by a case officer of the US Embassy in Athens, approximately mid-august. We contacted the Archdiocese who put us in touch with the acting US Ambassador and we presented our case on Lydia s behalf. She was granted another interview that went much more favorably but because of a procedural rule she is currently in limbo. In order to expedite the process for placing a person in the position of youth minister, Lydia agreed to continue pursuing her visa but that our parish would repost the position. Therefore, if anyone is interested, or knows someone who is, in the part-time youth minister position; please have him/her send a resume and cover letter to Fr. Rick, preferably by . If Lydia visa is approved first, she will be our youth minister. Family Ministry Conference Submitted by Lani Hattling I was fortunate to attend the Greek Orthodox National Family Ministry Conference that was hosted by St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church. It was very inspiring to attend a conference with so many other Orthodox faithful from all of over the United States who were excited to cultivate and grow family ministry in their own Churches. There was a lot of information and ideas that were shared during the conference. During the opening night introduction to the conference, we broke up into small groups and discussed 'Who is Our Family' and several statements of what the family ministry covers. They included 1) What it means to have Active Sacramental Members in the Church; 2) The importance of the need to 'Drive The Church Home'; 3) Need to appeal to 'All ages and All Stages'; 4) Family ministry needs to be "People Centered - not program centered."; 5)Family ministry needs to 'Build Relationships'; 6) Family Ministry 'Connects Church to Community'. The rest of the conference included breakout sessions and national speakers. page 5

6 Attending the Clergy/Laity Conference Submitted by Alexis Bighley The Philoptochos Assembly October 2-5 in Sioux City, IA was an invigorating and enlightening experience for me. I gained insight into the following areas of our Greek Orthodox Church: The governance of the Greek Orthodox Church both on the regional level and national level Thoughtful speakers who shared their life experience and their faith their conversion to the Greek Orthodox Faith An amazing amount of philanthropic outreach programs that our Faith community is involved in through the Metropolis and Archdiocese The continuing investment of resources into technology for the education of our parishioners and young people All in all, I recommend to any member of our parish community to consider attending laity conferences in the future. Thank you for electing me as a voting delegate to the conference. St John the Almsgiver: For the Thanksgiving Holiday St. John was born in Cyprus in the year 560. When John grew up, he married and had children. But his children died. And then, when his wife also died, he was left alone and suffered very much. John began to direct his life more towards that of a monk. He practiced all the Christian virtues through his great love for God. St. John had a special love for all men who were poor, and for strangers. He gave them everything that they had need of! The people elected John to be the Patriarch of Alexandria during the time that Heracles was the Emperor. St. John built a special hospital and house for strangers and for poor people, supporting these places from his own riches. He gave of his mercy, not only to the faithful of his flock, but also to those who were not faithful of the Church. Because of this, the people called him "The Merciful One. St. John lived as Patriarch until he was very old. When he died, the people whom he loved so much cried for him, and buried his body with great honor. We celebrate his feast on November 12.
