1 St. Paul, MN S T. G E O R G E G R E E K O R T H O D O X C H U R C H December 2007 Volume 13, Issue 11 Glad Tidings Marathon for Philoxenia House by Diana Dokos On October 7th, 2007, the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon celebrated its 30th Anniversary. This date also marked the anniversary of my first ever marathon experience. It was back in March that I decided to join a group of about sixty Orthodox people here in Chicago to train for this huge event, while raising money along the way for a very specific and wonderful cause...the Philoxenia House, in Rochester, Minnesota. My group raised over $50,000, all of which will go directly to the house! For those of you that do not know, the Philoxenia House is a place that offers free housing for those individuals requiring medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic. To date, it has housed dozens of families from all over the world. I alone raised a little over $2,200. I received an overwhelming amount of support from the parishioners at my beloved home parish of St. George in St. Paul, Minnesota, my parish in Chicago, St. John the Baptist, and my co-workers at the high school at which I work. I cannot express enough, my gratitude to the individuals that supported me. Their words of encouragement, donations, love and prayers truly helped get me through this milestone. I can honestly say that I have never experienced anything as physically challenging as this marathon. Mother Nature did not cooperate with us on that day, and each runner suffered through extremely hot and uncomfortable weather conditions. The temperature rose to 88 degrees Fahrenheit plus humidity, and a record high was reached in Chicago. I did my best to stay hydrated, and tried to ignore the heat I was feeling and the pain I was enduring. As incredibly difficult as it was, I prayed and pushed myself to run and complete the marathon. I ran with my heart and soul -- I ran for those patients at Mayo that I will never meet -- I ran for those who supported me -- I ran strong for the cause that I was running for. My parents, my friends and my co-workers were out there cheering me on, and thankfully, a few even jumped into the course at various mile markers and ran with me. When I felt like I could no longer go on...when I felt utterly defeated, they inspired and pushed me forward and said, "You can do this!" And I did -- thanks and glory be to God, I did finish the marathon. Crossing that finish line was exceptionally exhilarating and so incredibly emotional. My tears could not be contained as I hugged my parents and close friends who truly helped me get through this grueling event. And even though, physically speaking, I crossed the finish line "alone", I carried each and every family member, friend, loved ones...all of my supporters across the finish line with me! I would like to offer a special and heartfelt thank you to my family, friends and each supporter for your love and encouragement. I could not have succeeded without you! 2 Glad Tidings Page 2 From the Desk of the President... Last month I relayed where we ve been in This month, I d like to take a look forward to It is my goal to encourage each of us to increase our involvement in the ministries of the church. I think you will agree that doing this will prove beneficial to us individually and collectively. Sorry, I can t. I m too busy. How often have we heard others (or even ourselves) utter these words as an excuse for not getting more involved at St. George? I recall saying words to this effect the first time I was asked about running for Parish Council. It seems that in today s day and age with satellite TV and radio, the internet, Blackberry's, ipods and all kinds of other techno-gadgets to occupy our time, not to mention professional or youth sports and every other manner of entertainment, we have less time than in the past. But, as I was reminded recently at Family Camp, we have the same 24 hours in a day just like every generation that has come before us. Why then does it sometimes seem that volunteering for a worthwhile ministry, attending an extra weekday service, or even coming to church for Sunday Divine Liturgy is the straw that will break the camel s back? Perhaps it feels this way because we work too much or our children have many activities that occupy our time. Maybe we live too far away and fighting traffic to get to church for a meeting is a hassle. Sometimes we don t want to get involved in a committee out of fear that once we do volunteer, we will end up getting dumped on and become a committee of one. Sadly, sometimes we may even avoid such activities because of the criticism that seems to invariably follow taking on new leadership efforts. But rather than seeking an answer to this question, perhaps it would be more beneficial for us to examine the dilemma from an different perspective with a renewed sense of purpose. St. Paul counsels us, do not grow weary in doing good. (2 Th. 3:13). Implicit in this guidance is his understanding that as Christians we should not just be busy, but that we should be busy doing good works. When viewed in this manner, it becomes apparent that to have time to participate in ministries of the church, we need to place a focus on what is truly important. Easier said than done, I know. No doubt we are busy. And after all, it is human nature to make time for things that are a priority and to make excuses for things that are not. So, what s a body to do? As we look to the New Year, what would happen if each of us at St. George were to make a commitment to be involved in just one more ministry in coming year than we were in 2007? On an individual level we would each have succeeded in doing more good works in the name of Christ. On a grander scale, however, our collective efforts might result in a fundamental change. I believe that if such a commitment were made, we would witness a tangible difference in our own lives, the lives of others in our parish community and the lives of those beyond who may not be Orthodox Christians or even Christian at all. How would this difference manifest itself? Primarily, I believe it would help us to focus more on how we can make a positive difference and focus less on the tribulations of our daily lives. Sounds like a good plan to me. So where does one start? Fortunately, that s the easy part. There are many different ministries at St. George to which we can devote our time. For starters, the Visitation Committee would benefit immensely from even the smallest offering of assistance. Presently, this committee is made up of only three people who could certainly use more help to make visits, call or correspond with the homebound of our St. George community. As you might imagine, this ministry is especially appreciated during the holiday season. What a great opportunity to make an immediate impact with very little effort. Alternatively, opportunities abound in the ministries of missions and benevolence. First, one can become active (or more active) within the Philoptochos Society, which has a long-standing history of aiding the poor, undertaking other philanthropic causes and perpetuating Orthodox Christian concepts, traditions and families. Alternatively, one can join the Missions & Benevolence Committee, another small committee, to assist in the effort at St. George to provide assistance to worthy causes on the local, national and international fronts. Finally, if you are looking for more hands-on work, Loaves & Fishes presents a wonderful opportunity to provide a hot meal to the less fortunate of our brothers and sisters in the greater St. Paul community. This ministry, which has been at St. George for years, has been struggling recently and could certainly use some additional hands to assist those working in the ministry currently. Of course, I ve highlighted just a few of the many ministries at St. George. Other opportunities await us. The important thing is to find something that fits your talents and get busy. It is my sincere hope that in 2008 and beyond, each one of us will make a concerted effort to find the time to do one thing more than we ve done in the past. In so doing, we can put into practice the petition (recited during every Divine Liturgy) to commit ourselves, one another and our whole life to Christ our God. Eric Chadwick

6 Glad Tidings Page 6 Book Store Bread for Life, Reading the Bible" by Theodore Stylianopoulos This little book consists of many talks give by Father Stylianopoulos at retreats throughout the United States. His basic purpose is to introduce the Christian to the message of the Bible and to help him/her to understand the value of Bible as one of the great spiritual resources of our Orthodox Christian tradition. He quotes St. John Chrysostom, "I exhort you both to obtain Bibles and retain together with the Bibles the thoughts they set forth...the Scriptures were not given us for this only, that we might have them in books, but that we might engrave them in our hearts." "Living the Liturgy" by Stanley S. Harakas This book is written to encourage active participation in the Liturgy. It is written to help one participate positively and meaningfully in the Divine Liturgy in a moving and satisfying way. He discusses liturgical living, living the liturgy, life in the liturgy and make the liturgy live. "The Orthodox Church, A Well-Kept Secret, A Journey Through Church History" by Father George Nicosizin This book is written on the premise that it is important for us to know the history of the Church in order to make a better evaluation of Christ's teachings and His Mission of salvation to the world. He is the Savior Who wants all of us in His Kingdom. We also study church history because Jesus founded only One Church. Church history helps us evaluate our Holy Orthodox Church as the true historical church. Blessed Nativity
