1 A Word from Father Rick Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Regis tr y P.3 Paris h News P.4 Yout h News P.6 Philop to c ho s News P.7 We are looking forward to an active month of October. By the time you receive the newsletter I will probably be well into our pilgrimage to Russia and the Holy Land (Sept.27 Oct.11). Joined by thirty-five Orthodox Christians from around the Twin Cities, we are looking forward to our adventures in St Petersburg led by Mrs. Deb Korluka. And in the Holy Land, Mr. & Mrs. Tom and Mary Rudquist will help facilitate our navigation to the various holy sites in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and elsewhere. It is my first time traveling in either place. Please pray for our safety. On October 1 st we celebrate Church Music Sunday. At this time, I would like to thank Denise Smith and Steve Arsenault for leading our choir and chanters respectively. Thanks also to all the choir members and chanters for their diligent effort to be present every Sunday and sing with faith in the Lord. The quality of chanting and singing is improving. We encourage our young people to join the chanters and the choir to begin learning the beautiful hymnology of our Orthodox Church. Many have said our hymns are the theology of the Church in melody. On October 6-8 is the annual Family Camp. This is a great opportunity for whole families to experience what the youth experience at the camp in the summer. A healthy daily dose of worship, education, food and fun is offered to all. I hope many will attend. Let me know if you need financial assistance. Have fun everyone! On October 14 th we commemorate St. Paraskeva Petka of Romania whose relic rests inside our holy altar table. ( saints/lives/2017/10/14/ venerableparasceva-petka-of-serbia) We will have liturgy that Saturday morning and I encourage all to come celebrate this famous saint. On that day in Jassy Romania, where the rest of her relics reside, thousands will line up to venerate her and glorify God on this feast. We do not even realize what a great treasure we have in our midst. The Orthodox Christian Fellowship group of students at both St. Thomas University and the University of Minnesota have begun to meet regularly for this new school year. The UST group meets every Thursday at 12 noon and invites students from all colleges in Saint Paul (St. Catherine, Macalester, Concordia, Hamline, & St. Paul). The group is edging ever closer to official student group recognition by the university. On September 17 th, our Sunday Catechetical School began. We thank our teachers for generously offering their time and talents to educate our youth in the Faith. Our teachers are Natalie Eidsvold (PS), Carol Alexis (K-1), Lama Ghazi (2,3), Stephen Kanavati (4,5,6), Anastasia Mastrogiorgis (7,8,9) and Vicky Paraschou & Nick Kanavati (10,11,12). We thank George Canas for several years of teaching and welcome Lama to replace him. They are under the able leadership of our youth minister Nathaniel Kostick, who has assumed the duties of director. Also on September 17 th we celebrated our annual parish/church picnic. Delicious food was prepared and served by parish council and helpers. Nathaniel organized games for the youth on the back lawn. Thanks to all! Later that same afternoon the Lyn Olson Medical Crisis Program Fall Gala was held at the Stillwater Public Library. As always, it was a wonderful evening overlooking the St. Croix River Valley and enjoying fellowship. Most special was hearing from many who have been helped through the program. They were invited to come and share their personal story. You can still donate to support the program Through the prayers of St. Demetrios, +Fr. Rick

6 Letter from the Youth Minister: To our Beloved Community, It is with great joy to announce that our youth program has once again started our school year youth nights. We have so many great things planned for our youth that I hope you join me in spreading the word and encouraging everyone to participate. Our kids will go rock climbing, roller skating, ice skating, baking, volunteering, movie watching, visiting the zoo, as well as many other fun activities. Not only that, I'd like to personally invite all of you to our seasonal Family Nights! On October 14, St. George families will be visiting the Twin Cities Corn Maze at 12pm. This will be our second time visiting the corn maze, and if it is anything like last year, we are bound to have a lot of fun! Not only will there be trivia for the children within the maze, but there are hay rides, corn pits, and many other activities to participate in. AND YOU ARE INVITED!!!!! Sunday School also began last month. We regret to announce that our own George Canas has stepped down from his many years teaching the 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday School class, but has asked to remain as a substitute. From all of us at St. George, I'd like to say thank you to all of his time and effort donated in serving our children. Related, I would like everyone to welcome our newest teacher, Lama Ghazi, as our new 2nd and 3rd grade teacher. We are excited to have her and know she will do an excellent job in the classroom. Once again, thank you to all of you. Without you, our youth program would not exist. In Christ, Nathaniel Kostick Youth Minister Family Camp: October 6-8 at Camp Courage in Annandale, MN. 7 St. Paul. MN To aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the Church through fund raising effort From the Mission Statement of National Philoptochos For over 70 years our chapter has been working tirelessly to uphold the mission of Philoptochos. By reaching out to others in need, we in Philoptochos can find the joy, indeed the blessings of sharing, giving, caring and helping. We continue in the steps of our mothers and grandmothers as we support national, metropolis and local Philoptochos efforts to help those in need. We are committed to assist those less fortunate and to make a difference. We are reaching out to all women in our community to invite, and involve you in our philanthropic endeavors. We need your talents and skills. Your desire to serve and help others will find a place of welcome in this philanthropic organization. Our meetings are held once a month, following liturgy. Upcoming meetings dates are: Sunday, October 1st & Sunday, November 12th. On Saturday, October 28th we look forward to hosting the Pan-Orthodox Tea and on Sunday, November 5th we will be passing a tray and hosting coffee hour for the philanthropies of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Just in time for the wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas season, on November 18th & 19th the annual St. George Greek Bake Sale will take place. This is our opportunity to showcase our delicious pastries and baked goods made from traditional recipes handed down from generation to generation. We would love to see you at our next meeting and hear you what you have to say! In Christ s service, Vicky Paraschou, New Icon: St. Elizabeth Orthodox Church recently gave a small, unique icon as a gift to our parish community. The icon is a photo-reprint of an original called, Theotokos Riverview, written by Olga Ivkin. It depicts an eschatological view of the City of St. Paul and the Mississippi River from the historic West Side/Riverview neighborhood. The following communities are included in the icon's cityscape: St. George, West St. Paul, St. Elizabeth, West Side, Holy Trinity, East Side, St. George, Summit. The St. Paul Cathedral appears in the icon, nestled among the skyscrapers. The icon presents Mary enthroned, holding Jesus coming in power flanked by St. Elizabeth and St. George who bear the following inscriptions: St. George I am a slave of Christ Jesus and in him do I trust; nothing in this passing life can weaken my resolve to serve God. - From St. George's testimony before the throne of Diocletian. He is depicted holding his own head, indicating the manner of his execution. St. Elizabeth "We are unprofitable slaves: we have done only that which was our duty to do." - From Luke's gospel (17:10) used by St. Elizabeth in her monastic rule for the Mary Martha Convent. St. Elizabeth is shown holding a cross, signifying her martyrdom at Alapayevsk. The original icon was presented to St. George Antiochian during the Vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Dormition. Thank you to Fr. Marc Boulos and the parish of St. Elizabeth for this thoughtful gift! page 7
